    Assumed Identity - A.A. Mercer

    1.

Linda hung up her cell phone and put it in her purse as quickly as she could, she heard Gary coming down the hallway, he wouldn’t understand why she had male friends, they were only friends.

Except for one, Gary wasn’t going to know about him.   Jim was more than a friend and she thought of him a lot lately, he had a pleasant smile and his big warm hands were comforting. She knew he could be a good husband to someone, maybe even her.

She knew it would be a matter of time before something would happen and Gary would find out, it was a matter of time. Time was running out.

Gary stood in front of the hallway mirror and stared at his reflection for a minute.

His head of grey hair was receding a bit but the hair was still there, he kept his strength up as much as possible.

I’m trying to decide if you’re cheating now or have you ever been in love with me. His voice had an edge to it he couldn’t hide, he glanced at her purse hanging off a thin strap of leather, he stared at it and wondered where she got it, then he remembered she had gotten it at a store downtown.

He could feel a headache coming on and felt the need for a beer, he shouldn’t but he didn’t really care. He knew they were having problems and the number one was him. No one wanted to hire a former boxer with a temper, he wasn’t a drunk, he could drink and be fine. He didn’t have a temper there were just people who pissed him off. He clenched his fists, and relaxed. He knew he was in control.

He was fine. Linda was the one who was crazy.

I don’t want to get into this with you, yes I’m in love with you, no I’m not cheating and we are going to be late for your friends party if we don’t hurry, I don’t really know why I have to go at all. She said, she was trying to defuse the mood.

It wasn’t doing much good, she was feeling guilty about last week, last month and all the weekends she lied to him about being out with the girls. She glanced in his direction and could feel the heat of his eyes, she was lying she knew somehow he knew it too.

She felt a tear burning in her eyes and fought it back.

And she knew she had just lied, there was another man and he was waiting for her later. Things were getting out of hand, she had to stop this.

They hadn’t been together very long, just long enough to have a kid who was now laying on the couch playing a video game she saw his head move as he played, she knew he was trying not to hear them, but he heard, it wasn’t the first time.

Darrin was a smart kid and knew what was going on, he picked up on things and Linda did her best not to say too much in front of him.

It’s a party, wives are invited and we have to take him, he pointed to Darrin who was playing a video game. Because we don’t have the time or money to get a babysitter right now. His voice was just above a whisper as he spoke and his hands were clenched into fists.

She didn’t want to be the one to feel those fists, that hatred and anger. She had seen him in the ring giving his opponent a beating, sometimes they would retire soon after.

Linda knew he would never hit her, and knew he married her only for the child. As he moved from the hallway, she heard something clink in his coat pocket, she wanted to know, but a part of her didn’t want to. He had a drinking problem; it didn’t help his temper.

He walked to the small living room and snatched the small game away from Darrin and tossed it onto a nearby chair, Sorry, kid we have to go. Darrin looked at his game and then at his dad, he knew he should leave it and went to his mom. She smiled at him as they went to the door and to the car.

The sun was setting over the mountains and it looked like something had drizzled gold across the top of the mountains.

Darrin smiled at it; he was usually in bed before sundown. They drove in silence; Darrin watched the scenery go by as the sun slowly disappeared behind the dark trees.

They came to a big three-story house on a top of a hill overlooking the city below. It was painted white with gold trim to make it more like a modern-day castle. There were a few people mingling around the decorative lampposts, comparing cars, and talking about the last place they had just vacationed. They pulled up to the curb and a young man who was barely 21 nodded to them, then two big guys in suits, they were bodyguards, bouncers or whatever the host wanted them to be tonight.

Gary smiled at himself as they parked and got out of the car. he left his wife and child behind as he walked into the party.

He was looking forward to getting a few drinks. He could smell something from the kitchen and didn’t know what they were serving but it smelled pretty good, the scent of bacon and something that smelled like shrimp got his attention and he followed one of the servers. Linda wasn’t much of a cook, or maybe he just wasn’t interested in her cooking. She was into healthy foods, she wanted him to eat better.

He walked around the house nodding to a few people who knew him, in a corner he saw someone he had hoped he would never see again.

Victor Montez, he was a loan shark and managed to buy half the gyms in town that involved boxing. Gary turned around and went the other way.

He adjusted his tie and followed a young woman with a tray of hors
