    Introduction

In publishing this second edition of Musings of a Mad Scientist, I have attempted three important steps related to book hygiene. First, I needed to make the book affordable to the public. To do this required acquiring a new publishing partner, MainSpring Books. They have guaranteed me the book will be sold for an amount of about ten dollars, compared to twenty-four dollars charged by the previous publisher. Second, I have contracted with the new publisher for a marketing package that will further help make the second edition available to readers. Third, and most important, the edition has been extensively edited to trim content, smooth transitions, and make the musings more readable. I hope the book is improved and of interest to readers of this genre.

    To Be Human

The speed of a mind does not matter. It is only control that matters.

We are animals. Human DNA codes are related and, in some places, identical, to DNA codes of other animals. This could not be by chance. Furthermore, the very machines of life (ribosomes, mitochondria, transcription complexes, and so on) are identical among animals and humans. Most of the basic organ systems, those that support digestion, metabolism, elimination, and awareness, are also very similar among species of animals. We all live within the same energy system. We do, in fact, still possess our animal natures, but this is not the problem. Rather, our animal natures, including our appetites, are an incredible part of our being.

The problem is that we are easily manipulated, because the human animal, by nature, is trusting and gullible when it comes to higher intelligence. I have learned this about myself. I studied the rip-off machine, from its plateau, in academia, and from its dungeon, in the narrow back alleys of Portland, Oregon, for example, or in the wide avenues of our nation’s capital. Under the influence of love, I was ripped off again and again; yet I was protected and allowed to witness the workings of the human soul. Not just to see how it feels, but to help me learn the lesson. I was led to the streets and protected, so I could tell a story from the streets, the best place to write from these days.

Drug addicts and alcoholics offered me company and understanding, in exchange for companionship, and occasionally money for drugs and alcohol. There were no other good choices, they said, those hard-to-imagine spirit guides, and nobody else seemed to care about what they had to say, either. Yet I cared because they clearly understood. They could understand what I was talking about. There was no easier attention to be bought than that of an addict in need. I was crazy in love, and I needed someone to talk to. I found him and her and them, impersonals, on the streets. They knew the voice of wisdom, and some of them spoke it quite well, and I recognized them because they understood me.
