Is Islam what motivates Muslims to attack civilians, suppress females and reject democracy? Are the terrorists devoted followers of Islam? or are they criminals who use the religion as a means to satisfy their personal desires? Could they be victims of the ancient discourse and the religious establishment? Are the founders and leaders of ISIS, Taliban, Al-Qaida, Hamas, Houthis and Hezbollah power seekers who want to attain influence through religion or are they devoted followers?

Why are Muslim countries among the poorest and the least free societies despite their vast natural resources? Why are they among the most corrupt ¹, misogynistic, and dysfunctional countries ² on Earth? Why have they been plagued with civil wars for decades? Why have the Muslim sects been at conflict with each other for centuries? What are the psychological basis and effects of these intergenerational conflicts? Why is there not one fully democratic Muslim-majority country to be found among the fifty Muslim states? Why are Muslims underrepresented in science, art, innovation and literature? Why are Muslim-majority societies plagued with chronic psychological and social diseases? What is the impact of believing in Islam and living by its teachings on the psyche? Do Islam or specific interpretations attract specific people who tend to become terrorist? What is the relationship between believing in the teachings of Islam and mental disorders?

Why do millions of Muslims desert their homelands and the whole of the Muslim world to become refugees in non-Muslim countries? Why does the majority of asylum seekers, refugees and displaced individuals worldwide come from the Muslim world? ³Why are Muslim communities in the West plagued with acute psychological, social and economic problems? Why are they overrepresented in crimes and underrepresented in science and literature? What motivates Muslim refugees to strive relentlessly to re-establish their previous societies’ rules and culture in the non-Muslim secular, advanced and prosperous countries they immigrated to? Why do they reject the culture and values of the societies they have chosen to settle in? ⁴ What motivates some of the non-Muslims who label themselves as progressive and liberal to ally with fundamental Islamic organizations and radicals and support their efforts to turn secular countries into Islamic theological states?

Is the concentration of Muslim communities in the non-Muslim countries a prelude to civil conflict?

    Moral Insanity

Can a society that includes millions of people lose its mind and how?

Can we diagnose all the people who accept slavery, paedophilia, systematic rape, looting, and mass-killing of innocent people with anti-social personality disorder?

Do the practices of the Taliban, Boko Haram, Al-Qaida, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Iranian regime, the Pakistani regime, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) represent the teachings of Islam as the millions of fighters and supporters across the world affirm or are they a proof of a mass mental disorder?

Did the Ottoman and the Abbasid caliphates that ruled the Muslim world for over a thousand years represent Islam? Which one of the current Muslim countries is a perfect Islamic state? Is Islam a remedy to or a cause of Muslims’ chronic social, economic and psychological troubles? Are there various understandings and interpretations of Islam and how different are they? Do the terrorists, the imams and the sympathizers of the fifty-two Islamic factions designated as Islamic terrorist organizations by the United Nations understand Islam and follow its teachings precisely? Is terrorism the result of misinterpretation of Islam or literal application of its teachings?

Is there a common motive behind the terrorist attacks that targeted all kinds of people all over the world and were carried out by different groups of Muslims? Why have these attacks been condoned and celebrated by Muslim masses? When and how did Islamic terrorism start? When and how is it going to end? Why have Muslim countries been in a constant state of war against their neighbours? How can we understand jihad and slavery from Islamic point of view?

Are Islam and Muslims in conflict with the values of the modern civilization? Are faithful Muslims at war against the rest of humanity? Had Islam enabled science and philosophy in the past? How and why?

Killing Non-Muslims: Terrorising the World with Impunity

Jihad is ordained upon you though you hate it.

    Allah

Fight in the way of Allah, and know that Allah is hearer, knower.

    Allah

In the past forty years, Muslims of different ethnicities, nationalities and backgrounds killed and wounded millions of non-Muslims in countless terrorist attacks across the world. The targeted victims were mostly civilians unaware that they were considered enemies of Allah and of his soldiers. They had never met the attackers and did not know much about Islam, in most cases. In contrast, the assailants attacked these people because they perceived them as enemies of Islam and Muslims. The killers, their ideology and the states and organizations that supported them and promoted their ideas have evaded justice so far. Neither the main culprits nor the rationale behind terrorism have been held accountable. The main criminals who prompted the killing of innocent people based on their identity and created and financed religious and political organizations that spread hatred all over the world were not held accountable for what they have done. All over the world, ignorant, cowardly and dishonest politicians, journalists and academics are assaulting the victims time and again by refusing to address the real problem and hold the powerful wealthy aggressive Islamic states, individuals and organizations accountable. They shy away from discussing the rationale responsible for terrorism.

Whenever Islamic terrorism is discussed, people introduced as moderate Muslims, human rights activists or experts join the self-serving politicians and businessmen in arguing passionately that Islam must not be examined. They do not represent the true Islam, many experts rush to assure us after every terrorist attack. Some argue that the number of Muslims participating in jihad is small in comparison to the total number of Muslims worldwide and many of the victims of jihad are Muslims themselves, thus we must not discuss Islam, let alone examine its teachings.

This argument ignores the obvious fact that the fighters for any ideology are usually a small percentage of its followers. The individuals who orchestrated and executed the Holocaust are nothing but a small fraction of all members of the Nazi party, let alone the German nation and the nations of the Axis and the worldwide sympathisers. Hence, would it be reasonable to say that the practices of the SS (Schutzstaffel) do not represent the Nazi ideology as most Nazis were not members of the SS units and they did not take part in their crimes? Is it fair to say that the Japanese as a nation were not responsible for the Imperial Army’s acts during the Second World War because the vast majority of them did not take part in these events?

When the American police brutality against Blacks in the USA or any other similar issue is discussed, it is done through highlighting racism, cultural norms or economic disparity as the core roots of the collective problem. The Holocaust is discussed as a practice carried out by groups of people in accordance with a malicious ideology, not an individualistic act carried by a limited number of extreme perpetrators who gave the orders or the specific obedient soldiers who carried out these orders. This logical approach is never applied to terrorism or other harmful practices supported and sanctioned by the teachings of Islam. Every time Muslim terrorists attack innocent people, Muslims or non-Muslims, commentators rush to argue zealously that terrorism has no religion.

The Pew Research Center conducted a major survey in 2013 to examine Muslims’ perception of suicide bombings and their views of Al Qaeda, Taliban, Hamas, and Hezbollah, in twenty Muslim countries. The results indicate that more than 195 million Muslims support terrorist attacks against civilians to defend Islam.7 Around 13 percent of the surveyed had a positive view of Al Qaeda and 23 percent said that they did not view the terrorist organization, which killed tens of thousands of innocent people all over the world, neither negatively nor positively. When⁷ asked if they thought that suicide bombings against civilians to defend Islam were justified, 37 percent of the Palestinian sample said often, 25 percent said sometimes, 12 percent said rarely, 10 percent said that they didn’t know, and just 10 percent said never. Fifty-eight percent of the Lebanese, 59 percent of the Egyptians, 57 percent of the Jordanians, 39 percent of the Malaysians, and 18 percent of the Indonesians affirmed that targeting civilians with suicide bombing to defend Islam was often, sometimes, or rarely justified. Eighteen percent of the Senegalese, 14 percent of the Turks, and 6 percent of the Tunisians said that they didn’t know if killing civilians for Islam was acceptable or not.⁸

In another survey conducted in 2015 to measure the support of ISIS among Muslims in different countries after it took responsibility for the recent major terrorist attacks that devastated Paris, Beirut, and Baghdad, the results show that only 28 percent of the Pakistanis viewed ISIS unfavourably. In Nigeria 14 percent of the Muslims viewed ISIS favourably. Sixty-two percent in Pakistan, 29 percent in Senegal, 25 percent in Malaysia, 19 percent in Turkey and 18 percent in Indonesia did not know if they like ISIS or not.

    Muslims have waged genocidal attacks against unsuspecting civilians across the world. They attacked New York City in 1993, 1994, 1997, Luxor – 1997, Tanzania and Kenya – 1998, New York City and Washington DC on 11 September 2001, Bali – in 2002, Beslan – 2004, Madrid – 2004, the Netherlands – 2004, London – 2005, Mumbai – 2008, Frankfurt – 2011, Toulouse – 2012, Montauban – 2012, Boston – 2013, Copenhagen – 2015, Brussels – 2016, Lahore – 2016, Nice – 2016, Paris – on 7 January 2015, 9 January 2015, 26 June 2015, 13 November 2015, in 2017, 2018 and in 2020, Orlando – 2016, Manchester – 2017, Westminster – 2017, Strasbourg – 2018, Sri Lanka – 2019, Nairobi – 1975, 1980, 1998, 2002, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, Chad – 2020, Romans-Sur-Isère – 2020, Reading – 2020, NYC – 2020, Vienna – 2020, Palma, Mozambique – 2021, Rambouillet – 2021, Würzburg – 2021, Texas – 2022.

These attacks as well as the countless mass-shootings, vehicle-rammings, random stabbings, beheadings and suicide-bombings carried out by Muslims against non-Muslims are an indisputable proof that the whole world is a stage of an armed conflict. A war is being waged by Muslims who believe that it is their duty to spread Islam through all means including death and terror. It is oddly incongruous when the victims’ societies refuse to believe what terrorists assure over and over again is their motive: to defend and spread Islam and rid the world of non-believers.

The Pakistani Muslim Malik Faisal Akram, a father of six, who stormed Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Texas and held Jewish people hostages for ten hours on 17 January 2022, was described as British by almost all the major American as well as other Western media outlets. President Joe Biden said during the attack: I don’t … we don’t have I don’t think there is sufficient information to know about why he targeted that synagogue, why he insisted on the release of someone who’s been in prison for over 10 years, why he was engaged, why he was using an anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli comments. ¹⁰ Journalists refrained from identifying him as a devoted Muslim fighting to release another devoted Muslim, Aafia Siddiqui, from the American jail, which is how he identified himself. In a recorded conversation with his brother during the standoff he stated that:

I promised my brother when I watched him on that death bed that I will go down as a martyr . . . I told them bring her [Siddiqui] here she’s got 84 years, they’re talking to her because I’m near the prison FMC Carswell . . . I have prayed to Allah for two years for this . . . I have asked Allah for this death and Allah’s with me . . . we’ll give them war. ¹¹

This Muslim was not the first one to attempt to free Siddiquie; in 2012, the chief of Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahri, offered to free the American hostage Warren Weinstein in exchange for her release. In 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) offered to free James Foley, which they beheaded later, if the Americans released the terrorist.¹²

In addition to terrorist groups, American Muslim organizations have also been campaigning to release this Pakistani woman known as the Lady of Al Qaeda. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which describes itself as the nation’s largest Muslims rights and advocacy organization, and the Elbially Law practice held a press conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on 12 November 2021, 37 days before the terrorist attack, to call for the release of Siddiqui.¹³ The executive director of CAIR-Dallas stated that Aafia Siddiqui is serving an unjust 86-year prison sentence for a crime that she did not commit. Several other senior members of CAIR have been demanding the release of the convicted terrorist claiming that she was innocent and that she was kidnapped. They accused the American army and the American justice system of targeting her unfairly because she is a Muslim. They have been campaigning, collecting money, and organizing press conferences to support her and to elevate her to an idol.¹⁴ They even created I am Aafia campaign.

This Pakistani terrorist lived in the United States from 1990 to 2003 as a student. She was put on the FBI Most Wanted Terrorist list in 2004: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9/11 terrorist attack, mentioned her name as one of the Al Qaeda operatives in the USA. She was married to his nephew and was carrying notes detailing a mass casualty attack on New York City sites, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and the Brooklyn Bridge when she was arrested in Afghanistan in 2008. While she was entering the interrogation room, she grabbed a weapon from one of the guards and opened fire at American soldiers. One of the soldiers returned fire and wounded her. She was arrested, treated, and flown to the United States to face justice. In 2010, a federal jury found her guilty on all counts related to the attack and sentenced her to 86 years in prison.¹⁵ During her trial, she demanded that no Jews be allowed on the jury. She requested a DNA test to be carried out to exclude any Jews from her trial. She wrote a letter to President Obama to warn him of them.

Before the attack on the synagogue had ended and while the hostages were still held at gun point, several American Muslims expressed their concerns that this Islamic terrorist attack could potentially be used by Islamophobes to harm Muslims. Hence, instead of condemning the terrorist attack, sympathising with the victims and asking themselves why their religion produces such criminals, they were concerned about what might happen to the members of their group.

The Bosnian Muslim illegal immigrant Dzenan Camovic who attacked unsuspecting policemen in Brooklyn, NY with a gun and a knife on 3 June 2020 said: I killed two police officers and my religion made me do it. ¹⁶ Three days earlier a 21-year-old Egyptian American Heba Alazhari attempted to kill an American police officer with a butcher knife outside Temple Terrace City Hall, Florida. She arrived at the City Hall at 1 p.m. and told an officer who was there that she needed help, and she wanted him to go outside with her. Once they left the building, she pulled out her concealed knife and tried to kill him.

In Notre Dame Cathedral, Nice, a Muslim from Tunisia attacked Christian worshippers killing three people and wounding several others, screaming Allah Akbar. He beheaded two of his victims, a 60-year-old woman and a 55-year-old sexton, after he stabbed them several times. The third victim was a 44-year-old Brazilian mother of three young children, whom he stabbed several times before she managed to flee and alerted people outside the church to the ongoing massacre inside. Before succumbing to her wounds, she asked the paramedics to tell her children that she loved them.¹⁷

Like Faisal Akram and many other terrorists, the murderer Brahim Aouissaoui had been a drug addict and a petty criminal before he repented and became a devoted Muslim. This uneducated person coming from a destitute Tunisian family entered Italy illegally on a boat in September 2020, a month before he carried out his religious attack. He took a train from Italy to Nice the night before the attack despite the fact that he had no documents and did not speak the language. He chose a time when few people were inside the cathedral so he would not face substantial resistance. He wanted to kill Christians as a collective punishment in retaliation for publishing cartoons that mocked Mohammad in France. Through killing people inside a place of worship, he and his accomplices sent a message that no one is sheltered from the Islamic violence.

Six months later, another Tunisian murdered an unarmed French woman while shouting Allah Akbar. The attack took place in the entrance to the Rambouillet Police Station, and the victim was a 49-year-old civilian mother of two who worked as an administrative assistant at the station. Stephanie Monferme was returning to work from her lunch break when she was stabbed in the throat several times inside the entrance of the station. The murderer, Jamal Gorchene, intruded into France in 2009 and remained in the country illegally for more than ten years. In 2020, the French authorities rewarded him for breaching the French laws and for violating the country’s sovereignty by granting him a legal residency. On 23 April 2021, he went to Rambouillet Police Station armed with a concealed knife, searching for a victim. He was walking outside the station pretending to be using his mobile phone, monitoring the entrance. Once he spotted Stephanie going in, he followed her and stabbed her several times from behind while screaming Allah Akbar. ¹⁸ This attack took place in the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims strive to please Allah.

On Wednesday, 24 March 2021, an Islamic militia affiliated with ISIS stormed into the town of Palma in Mozambique, targeting various sites. They were firing randomly at people to kill as many as they could. Among the victims were many African civilians as well as foreigners who worked in the oil industry. The religious fighters robbed two banks, ransacked businesses and governmental offices, and pillaged food storages. Many of the local Muslims have been suspected of aiding the terrorists.¹⁹ Three days after this attack, another group of mujahedeen carried out a suicide bombing against worshippers in a Catholic church in Makassar, Indonesia, thousands of miles away from Africa.²⁰ Although both groups may have never met each other, they were sharing the same motive and goal according to their statements.

In 2017, a devoted Muslim drove a rented truck into cyclists and runners in Manhattan, killing eight people and injuring further eleven. The murderer was a Muslim from Uzbekistan, who had immigrated to the United States a few years earlier. Like all the other mujahedeen, he wanted to spread Islam through killing as many non-Muslims as possible and terrorising their society.

On 14 July 2016, the Tunisian Mohammad Lahouiej-Bouhlel drove a 19-tonne cargo truck into people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. He killed 86 people and injured 458 others. He was driving the heavy truck at a fast speed on the pedestrian pavement in zigzag style to harm as many people as he could. Many of the victims this man ran over were children – he targeted them intentionally.

Similarly to every Islamic attack, it was an organized crime motivated by well-established religious ideas and supported by a community who had a specific collective identity. A group of Muslims living in France took part in coordinating this attack and financing it. They assisted Lahouiej-Bouhlel in acquiring the firearm and the truck and encouraged him to assault unsuspecting civilians. Two of these accomplices were naturalised French citizens. Their way of repaying the people who accepted them and gave them a country and a citizenship was by killing their children. Moreover, the attacker, who was an unemployed, uneducated convicted criminal, sent his family in Tunisia 100,000 euro in cash days before the attack.²¹ To this day, the French authorities did not disclose the source of the money. The Islamic State took responsibility for this attack in a statement read by the Muslim French citizen Adrien Guihal.²²

In 2015, Parisians were attacked by heavily armed and well-organized Muslims, most of whom were citizens of France and Belgium.²³ They killed 130 people and wounded another 413 innocent humans with bullets and explosions. The murderers were seeking Allah’s satisfaction through annihilating non-Muslim French people, as they stated. Many of the victims were teenage students, going about their normal activities near the National Stadium, cafés, bars, and Bataclan theatre, but the devoted Muslims decided to kill them and traumatise the French society and every human with a conscience, to satisfy Allah.

In Northern Mozambique jihadists justified killing or wounding thousands of individuals and displacing more than 800,000 others in a war they waged in 2017 and which is still ongoing, by stating that they were following Islamic teachings that call for exterminating non-Muslims.²⁴ Destroying whole villages, killing people randomly, kidnapping young girls and raping and enslaving them was implementation of Allah’s orders, they affirmed. These devoted believers claimed that they were following in the footsteps of Mohammad, the founder of Islam and their role model. They claimed that he had led many attacks against peaceful villages, most often massacring the men and enslaving the women and children.

Killing Americans with Their Money: The Betrayal of the Allies

The ex-head of the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI Hamid Gul affirmed that When History is written it will be stated that the I.S.I. defeated the Soviet Union in Afghanistan with the help of America. Then there will be another sentence: The I.S.I., with the help of America, defeated America. ²⁵

The Pakistani president, who lived for many years in the West and whose country is dependent on the foreign aid, was among the first Muslim leaders to congratulate his brothers in Taliban on their defeat of the infidels who for decades have been supporting his country with hundreds of billions of dollars. Imran Khan stated that What is happening in Afghanistan now, they have broken the shackles of slavery. ²⁶ The same president went to Moscow on 23 February 2022 to meet Putin and signed deals with him while the Russian forces were attacking Kiev. This man, who presents himself as a devoted Muslim and who led boycotting campaigns against France and Denmark for publishing cartoons of Mohammad, did not utter a word that could be seen as condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He did not show any support to the European countries which have been sending billions of euros in financial aid to Pakistan over the past 60 years.

Pakistan was not the only ally that betrayed the Americans and the Europeans in the war on terror in general or in Afghanistan in particular; several other Muslim allies supported the Taliban as well as other Islamic terrorist organizations while being supported by the Americans. This deception and duplicity of Muslim regimes when dealing with the non-Muslim countries is as old as the relations between the two parties.²⁷

In a public speech aired by Al Jazeera on 2 February 2009, and available on YouTube, the Kuwaiti Abdullah Nafisi discussed a potential biological attack against the Americans. The wealthy Islamic ex-MP was talking about the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent people:

Four pounds of anthrax in a suitcase. Carried by fedayee [a Muslim fighter willing to sacrifice his life] through the tunnels from Mexico to the US, is sufficient to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour, if it is properly spread in the metropolises there, what a horrifying idea [with a smile]. 9/11 will be a salad in comparison [the audience laughing, and he is laughing], am I right or not? And there is no need for airplanes, conspiracies, timings and so on. One person who has the courage to carry four pounds of anthrax and get to the White House lawn and spread these confetti all over them and then will do cries of joy [the audience can be heard cheering]. It will turn into a real celebration there... Terrorists are the most pious, the most honourable, the best people in this world.²⁸

The audience’s loud applause and laughter attest to their support for this call. This took place in Qatar, a hereditary sheikhdom protected by American soldiers at the expense of the American taxpayer. The Kuwaiti speaker seemed to have forgotten that his country was liberated by the Americans at the expense of the American treasury and that it is an American ally.²⁹ Most importantly, the ruler of Qatar allowed the event to happen and to be aired by his TV channel. Neither the Qatari Sheikh nor the Kuwaiti regime took any action afterward. This was despite the fact that both countries are dependent on the American and British protection, especially against Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq. Moreover, both countries harshly stifle expressions of free speech inside their borders and punish criticising Islam or the rulers with long jail sentences. Also, the wealth of both countries comes from the oil that was discovered by the Americans and the British.

This is not an aberration in the way Muslim countries in general and the Gulf States in particular have been dealing with Western powers. In the past twenty years, many individuals and organizations were allowed to sponsor terrorism against non-Muslims with the protection of these states. Some of these regimes have been openly providing financial and political support to terrorists, while others look the other way when their citizens are involved in terrorism and their money is used for the purpose.

Radical Islamic organizations and individuals based in the Gulf States have amassed huge fortunes and influence through governmental protection, contracts and handouts, that allowed them to extend their influence to the Muslim communities in the West. Although many of these organizations have been indicted for supporting terrorism, they remain protected by the ruling families.

In contrast, journalists, professors, bloggers, and activists who defend human rights, tolerance and justice, have been suppressed and jailed for expressing their peaceful opinions in these sheikhdoms. This shows the double standards and hypocrisy on the side of the Gulf’s ruling families on the one hand and the culpability of many Western decision makers when dealing with the petrol-rich regimes on the other hand. It also reveals the complexity of the problem and the fact that terrorism is by no means an individualistic act.

In a cable from the Secretary of State to the Department of Treasury regarding Terrorist Finance dated 30 December 2009, which was posted on WikiLeaks, we see a different face of the so-called American allies. The report states that While the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) takes seriously the threat of terrorism within Saudi Arabia, it has been an ongoing challenge to persuade Saudi officials to treat terrorist financing emanating from Saudi Arabia as a strategic priority… Still, donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide. 30 Needless to say, many of these groups have killed nationals of countries which maintain strong relationships with the Saudis. In the same report, Hillary Clinton complains bitterly about Kuwait’s double standards:

The US Government has consistently engaged the Government of Kuwait (GOK) about the specific activities of terrorist financiers in country, Kuwaiti charities financing terrorism abroad, and Kuwait’s lack of a comprehensive anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime. While the GOK has demonstrated a willingness to take action when attacks target Kuwait, it has been less inclined to take action against Kuwait-based financiers and facilitators plotting attacks outside of Kuwait. Al-Qaida and other groups continue to exploit Kuwait both as a source of funds and as a key transit point . . . A particular point of difference between the U.S. and Kuwait concerns Revival of Islamic Heritage Society (RIHS). In June 2008 the USG domestically designated all RIHS offices RIHS under Executive Order 13224 for providing financial and material support to al-Qaida and UN 1267-listed al-Qaida affiliates, including Lashkar e-Tayyiba, Jemaah Islamiyah, and Al-Itihaad al-Islamiya. The United States nominated RIHS for listing under UNSCR 1267 but Indonesia placed a technical hold on the RIHS listing due concerns regarding RIHS’s presence in Indonesia. Libya also placed a hold – probably at Kuwait’s behest – citing insufficient information on RIHS’s activities . . . In Kuwait, RIHS enjoys broad public support as a charitable entity. The GOK to date has not taken significant action to address or shut down RIHS’s headquarters or its branches, which is consistent with GOK tolerance of similar behavior by Kuwaiti citizens and organizations as long as the behavior occurs or is directed outside of Kuwait.

Countless other reports by the United States Department of State and by different governmental and international non-governmental organisations showed that huge fortunes from Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have been financing radical Islam as well as terrorism all over the world. Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, ISIS and all the other terrorist organizations received billions of dollars from these countries, without which they could never have been as powerful as they were. Although many reports indicate that most of the money comes from private donors, they document that the absolute rulers of these countries do nothing or very little to stop the funding of terrorism, let alone to curb the effort aimed at radicalising Muslims. These reports usually shy from stating that the funding of terrorism would not have happened without the approval of the Gulf’s ruling families or some of their members. In these countries, where citizens are monitored by several security apparatuses and are thrown in jails for an improper tweet or private talk, organizations cannot exist, and money cannot be transferred in such a magnitude without the approval of the families at the very top.³¹

It is an irony that the money which kills people all over the world comes mainly from the Western oil-consumers and ends up in the pockets of few clans whose members acts as the masters of the universe. To add salt to the injury, oil itself was discovered by American and British people, who provided expertise and worked hard in the Arabian desert to create the oil industry. To this day Western companies and non-Muslim expatriate labourers are the ones that work these oil fields, while the six ruling families’ members reap the benefits.

    1400-Year-Old Mentality

    So what is going on?

In every major terrorist attack, organized group of Muslims assail people they consider non-Muslims to please Allah, other Muslims provide the money, imams issue edicts that justify the attack, commentators defend Islam, and Muslim masses show their support. The immediate aim of terrorism is to murder and harm as many non-Muslims as possible and terrorise the victims’ societies. The final end is to destroy all non-Muslim communities and cultures psychologically, to force them to capitulate to Islam, give up their identities and hence become slaves, not only of Allah but also of his soldiers.

The rhetoric of leaders of the contemporary Islamic terrorist organizations show that these people are psychologically living in the past. In many of the Islamic attacks, the perpetrators legitimized their aggressions by invoking ancient religious themes and events, construing their actions as continuation of a 14-century-long holy war between Islam and the non-believers.³² They comfort their followers by affirming that they are repeating what devoted Muslims have been doing for over a thousand years. Their main aim is to impose Islamic law on all people, thus obliterating the current universal human civilization with all its flaws, inventions and advancements. In other words, they want to take humanity back to the seventh century, eliminating technology, civil justice system, human rights, contemporary medicine, educational systems, arts – really all human progress.

They present themselves as the obedient soldiers of Allah’s last and only valid religion. They seek his blessing through rejecting every idea that was not part of the original Islamic discourse and practice that existed in the seventh century, the heydays of Islam, regardless of its value.

Osama bin Laden summarised this belief in a speech aired by the Qatari satellite news station Al Jazeera right after the 9/11 attacks. In this speech, he expressed his responsibility for and his pride of these attacks. He saw killing innocent people as a gallant virtuous act, in accordance with Islam. He even blamed the victims because they were not Muslims. In the same breath he said that his Muslim mujahedeen have:

experience in using guerrilla warfare and the war of attrition to fight tyrannical superpowers, as we, alongside the mujahidin, bled Russia for 10 years, until it went bankrupt and was forced to withdraw in defeat. All Praise is due to Allah. So, we are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy. Allah willing, and nothing is too great for Allah.

In another video, bin Laden is seen talking to a number of his assistants and prominent Muslim imams who came to visit him from Saudi Arabia right after the 9/11 attacks to show their support. In this video, bin Laden was more straightforward in explaining his beliefs and the reasons for carrying out terrorist attacks against civilians. He simply repeated the saying of the founder of Islam and its main character, Mohammad: I was ordered to fight the people until they say there is no god but Allah, and his prophet is Muhammad. He adds that some people may ask: why do you want to fight us? and further explains that this is the nature of the relationship between those who say: I believe in one God and Mohammad is his prophet, and those who don’t. He affirmed that his attacks were successful because In Holland, at one of the [Islamic] centres, the number of people who accepted Islam during the days that followed the operations were more than the people who accepted Islam in the last eleven years. One of the Saudi Muslim imams replied to bin Laden describing the Muslims reaction to the attacks on New York and Washington: everyone was overjoyed … we stayed [up] until four o’clock, listening to the news… everyone was very joyous and saying Allah is great, Allah is great, we are thankful to Allah, praise Allah. And I was happy for the happiness of my brothers. That day the congratulations were coming on the phone non-stop. He finished his talk with a verse from Quran: Fight them [non-Muslims], Allah will torture them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them. ³³

The terrorist attacks that killed 3000 innocent human beings were presented by all the attendants in the video as implementations of Islam. The justifications and the motivations were based on original Islamic ideas known to them and to other Muslims, as their response shows clearly. This pathological desire to live in the past is a symptom of the crisis of Muslims.

Analysing the speeches of terrorist masterminds and radical rulers such as al-Zarqawi, Abubaker Shekau, Khamenei, Abu Baker al-Baghdadi or Hassan Nasrallah, we find people who see the world through an ancient prism. They are living in the seventh century, immersed in its conflicts and obsessed with its figures and norms. They talk as if they were with the early Muslims in their invasions that obliterated the old civilizations and took its subjects as slaves. They back their ideas with what they claim to be Islamic original texts taken from the Quran and the sayings of Mohammad while ignoring all the progress and the changes that took place since that discourse was produced. They long for the destruction of human civilization which they perceive as their religious duty.
