Chapter 1

When she saw the Caller ID, Izzy's stomach dropped. She'd been avoiding her mother for weeks, but couldn't put off her phone calls any longer unless she wanted Theresia to track her down in person. That was the last thing she needed. Since mating her dragon, she'd developed an inability to keep other's emotions from taking her over. It was exacting a huge toll on her life. Farryn, her dragon mate, had to rescue her from the grocery store when a group of Dragondell High School students had an early release day. With any luck, the effects wouldn't be as bad over the phone. She grabbed her coat and prepared for battle, might as well walk down to the community board to get the mail while she talked. Maybe the exercise would keep her calm. On the last ring before the voicemail picked up, Izzy answered.

Hi, Mom.

Oh, I didn't expect you to answer. Seems I'm always missing you. Izzy felt the reprimand behind the tone and let it run off her shoulder. It would get worse before it got better, she was sure of it.

I'm glad I was available. That wasn't a complete lie. The crisp air bit at her fingers, so she dug in her pockets for her gloves.

"Me too, you sure are busy since you quit your job and moved in with that man. Does that little mountain town have any opportunities?"

Oh brother, a hit at Farryn and Dragondell in one sniping complaint. Izzy hunched her shoulders, releasing tension from her neck, and drawing the clean mountain air deep into her lungs. Nope, no job yet. Just busy unpacking and settling in. She couldn't imagine working in her current condition.
