About this ebook

Join Barry Louis Polisar’s host of ghosts, ghouls and goblins as the house shakes, the candlesticks fly, the TV pirouettes and a few ghosts take off their sheets…it’s the liveliest Halloween party ever–until things get out of hand in this spell-binding but good-natured tale told in verse. On Halloween night, a child’s party is visited by real ghosts and goblins. The problem is–everyone is in a mask and costume and no one knows who the real creatures are–until some of the real ghosts and goblins begin to show off for each other. The host and his friends learn, in a highly original way, how to deal with negative, destructive behavior and to take responsibility for their situation.

I enjoyed reading this novel because of its utilization of humor to engage readers and its fun, creative story line. The author integrated humor throughout the rhymes and illustrations that went along with the poetry in this story. The author's comedy was included seamlessly throughout, making the poetry fun to read and keeping engaged the entire time. One of the comical moments was when the author described two ghosts as, "Although they danced politely, their friends were very rude- in fact, two ghosts took off their sheets and flew completely nude." The plot of this book instantly made it a fun read and the plot progression was executed in a successful and thrilling way. The author describes how the main character's Halloween party is crashed by actual monsters, revealing new creatures and the havoc they wreak as the story progresses, which keeps the readers excited to keep reading. The excitement builds initially when an Ogre appears warning him that at his party there will be "those you did not invite" and then suddenly the boy "heard a rattle, then a clack" when the first unwanted guests, skeletons, came running in the door. This novel expresses to readers to stand up for yourself and for what is right, despite what people are doing around you through a playful story line.
