About this ebook
When people sign up for doctoral study, they don't always realise that in the process they need to write a book. The doctoral thesis or dissertation is the length of an average paperback. Even people studying for a professional doctorate, or a PhD by publication, need to write the equivalent of a short literary novel. Writing so much can be a daunting prospect. This fully updated second edition e-book is filled with practical advice and tips to get you started and help you keep going.

Imagine you had a kind big sister and she had already been through the experience of researching for a PhD or for her job. Then, imagine she wrote a book to help you on your journey. This is the book that would result.

Clear, concise, helpful and written with a sense of humour. If only all text books could be like this.

Research Ethics in the Real World: Euro-Western and Indigenous Perspectives
(Policy Press 2018)
A remarkable guide which lays the foundations for ethical practice enabling researchers to really approach their work with an inclusive foresight arising from the basic principles of integrity. I love how this book may be applied across many disciplines and will find a multitude of use. Not a book to remain on the shelf as it’s also such an enjoyable read.

Creative Research Methods: A Practical Guide
(2nd edn, Policy Press 2020)
Thank goodness for Helen Kara’s work. Written in an easily accessible style, Kara tells it like it is and guides her readers beyond her own text to further reading and exploration. In terms of getting bang for one’s buck, this is exactly what a second edition should be - substantively re-worked from the first edition, with considerable new content and chapters.
Sharon Inglis, Staffordshire University
Qualitative Research for Quantitative Researchers
(SAGE 2022)
A clear and comprehensive book explaining the mysteries of qualitative research for those trained in a different paradigm. A must-read for the quantitative researcher who undertakes mixed-method research or occasionally assesses qualitative proposals or papers – or who simply seeks to broaden their research horizons.
