    Chapter 1

    A nightmare attacks

    Look out!

It was an intense thought that reached Sarwen, and it came from her brother Daron. The next moment, Rarax, the giant bat they were sitting on, leaped upward, flapping its wings vigorously a few times.

The elf girl clawed with one hand in the fur of the dragon-sized flying monster. In the other, she held a book whose pages were barely larger than the palm of her hand.

While Daron had been guiding the giant bat with the magical power of his will for the last few hours, Sarwen had been completely absorbed in the small book. It contained a collection of very rare spells and came from one of the libraries of Elbenhaven. Keandir, the king of the Elven kingdom and grandfather of the two Elven children, had given them the order to bring this book as quickly as possible to the distant Elven city of Berghaven.

Normally, time did not matter to the elves. Their life lasted so long that it resembled an eternity. Daron and Sarwen were already over a hundred years old, but for many adult elves, age counted by millennia. Whether something was done today, tomorrow, or a few decades from now, it usually didn't matter that much.

Actually, her grandfather Keandir could have waited until the Duke of Nordbergen docked once again with his ship in Elbenhaven and paid a visit to the king in his castle, in order to give him the small book with the magic formulas on this occasion.

But in this case, time was of the essence. On the coast of North Bergen there was the worst plague of jellyfish crabs since the elves had founded their new kingdom in the interlands. The spells were meant to drive away the jellyfish crabs and prevent them from eating away the last of the plants that thrived in the windswept cold of Nordbergen.

When King Keandir had learned through a message from a carrier pigeon of the great need that prevailed in the distant duchy, he had immediately thought to send Daron and Sarwen with the giant bat Rarax to deliver the small book to Duke Isidorn. A book with ancient banishment spells, written in a distant time, when the magic of the elves had been very strong. Surely there was a spell in it that could be used against the jellyfish crawlers.

Book of Expulsion Magic was the title of the small volume, which was still written in the Old Script. This had been used by the Elves before they had reached the intermediate land with their ships and founded their new kingdom of Elbiana there. Sarwen knew both the script and the language of Athranor, the ancient homeland of the Elves, in which many older magical scripts were written. For Sarwen was fascinated by the magic of the ancient times and always delved into the books and scrolls that had been brought from Athranor by the Elves and stored in the libraries at the royal court of Elbenhaven. It was the collected knowledge of the Elves - and much of it was already almost forgotten.

While the elven girl had left it to her brother to steer the tamed giant bat by the power of her mind, Sarwen had immersed herself in the Book of Expulsion Magic during the flight. Some of the spells were completely enigmatic and seemed to make no sense at all, even though Sarwen knew every single word and elven rune that made them up. But despite all this, what was written simply remained mysterious to her in many cases.

Nevertheless, Sarwen would never have dared to utter even one of these spells carelessly, for the consequences could not be foreseen. True, the magic of Elvenkind had been weakening ever since they had left the Old Country, and some even claimed that the powers of Elvish shamans and mages had been greatly diminished even before that. But in this respect, Daron and Sarwen were exceptions: In them, magic was stronger than it had been among the elves for many ages.

It was a dark but powerful force that had met their grandfather King Keandir on the island of Naranduin and had entered him shortly before the Elven ships had reached the intermediate land. And Keandir had bequeathed this power to his sons and his grandsons, it seemed.

It was this special power, among other things, that ensured that the two elven children were able to control such an enormous creature as the giant bat Rarax.

Daron and Sarwen had by now reached the snow-covered mountain ranges on the border between Elbiana and Nordbergen. Craggy cliffs rose into the sky, and in between there were gloomy valleys where it was not light even during the day. An icy wind blew around the two's pointed ears, which pricked through the silky, very fine blue-black hair.

Any human would have frozen to death in no time, but the two Elven children did not mind - even though Sarwen wore only a dress made of thin Elven silk and her twin brother's doublet was made of the same flowing material and not of thick wool. But elves were quite impervious to cold. And if it really became too frosty even for them, a simple warming spell, which almost every elf was capable of, would help. Even those whose magical abilities were only very weakly developed.

You could have warned me, Daron! sent Sarwen an angry thought to her brother - for the two Elven twins were so close that each could read the other's mind.

We had to go up or we would have hit one of the snow peaks, Daron defended himself.

But not so suddenly. I was so engrossed in the spells of the book.

Maybe this is not the appropriate time to let a book take up all of his attention.

Oh, come on! complained Sarwen. You did that on purpose!

    Don't be like that.

Once we are in Berghaven, I will have to hand over the 'Book of Expulsion Magic' to the Duke of North Bergen, and then I will probably not get another chance to read it for a long time. And at the same time, I just had the feeling that I had completely understood one of the spells, which before still seemed tremendously puzzling to me...

Daron's eyes suddenly turned completely black, so that nothing white could be seen in them. A sign that he was concentrating his magical powers very strongly. It lasted only a short moment, but Sarwen felt it, although she could not see her brother's eyes because she was sitting behind him.

    What's going on, Daron?

I don't know, he said aloud, apparently because his mind was elsewhere. There was also a clearly visible wrinkle on his actually smooth forehead as he turned his head to look at Sarwen over his shoulder.

Something about Rarax? the elf girl asked.

He nodded. He shies away from the dark valleys.

    Why?

    He's afraid.

But there's no need for that!

Maybe that's why he just went up in such a jerky way.

Let's calm him down with combined magical powers, Sarwen suggested.

But Daron thought that was an exaggeration. You go ahead and read your book, I can handle our bat by myself. That would be a laugh.

And as the elf boy said this, his eyes once again filled completely with blackness. This time, however, they remain black.

Suddenly, Rarax let out a scream so shrill that Daron and Sarwen could just shield their sensitive elven hearing from it, lest they suffer permanent damage.

Calm down!, Daron sent an energetic thought to the giant bat. The giant flying monster let out a muffled growl in response. It complied with Daron's forces, but on the other hand made it clear how much he disliked it.

I wonder what's wrong with him, Sarwen thought. There's really nothing here to be afraid of ...

Her thought broke off, because a clear uneasiness suddenly made itself felt in Sarwen's stomach area. A feeling, however, that had nothing to do with ordinary hunger, because going without food for a long time was no problem for elves. And for Daron and Sarwen this was especially true, because they had already decided for many decades to stop growing for the time being, so that they needed less food anyway.

The uneasy feeling Sarwen felt came from an unknown magical power that she perceived only very briefly. And she didn't even need to read Daron's mind to realize that he had felt it, too.

What was that? asked Sarwen of her brother silently.

I don't know. I've always thought that the dark valleys of Nordbergen were completely uninhabited.

Maybe that doesn't apply to all dark valleys, Sarwen surmised.

Often enough, Daron had looked at the maps of the Elven Kingdom with his grandfather King Keandir, for the Elven King felt that his successor should know about his future kingdom. North Bergen was so far from the court in Elvenhaven that Duke Isidorn had to rule there for the king, and only a few Elves lived there, most of them in the city of Berghaven in the north and a smaller part in the city of Turandir in the south. The land in between was mostly uninhabited, Daron had learned from his grandfather.

The elf boy looked down into the depths. They were flying over one of those valleys that were so deep that there was eternal darkness, because no matter from which side the sun shone, the bottom of the valley was always in shadow.

The blackness in the valley that Rarax was flying over was so dark that not even Daron's sharp elven eyes could see down to the ground. It almost looked as if there was a dark maw leading directly into a dark void.

Daron shuddered, for he suddenly felt a chill rise from down there such as he had never felt before. He muttered a spell of warmth and heard Sarwen do the
