Annie Rix Militz was born in California in March 1856 being the firstborn of Hale and Alice P. Rix. FOREWORD
The following lessons were first given in Los Angeles at the Home of Truth in the summer of 1907. Since then, they have been presented to large audiences in various cities of the world with the happiest and most practical results.
Although spoken, and without notes, the shorthand reports have made it possible to publish the lectures almost verbatim.
They were published in THE MASTER MIND magazine in 1914, and although the family talk style has been retained, for this book they have been revised, added, and rearranged with subheadings so they are easy to study or teach others, and in many respects convenient for the practical student of the spiritual mind to achieve the power of concentration that he desires.
May all your needs and desires in this regard be quickly satisfied, oh reader, and may this small volume be a privileged instrument to set your feet on the Straight Path forever, is the author's fervent prayer,
ANNIE RIX MILITZ.
THE NATURE OF CONCENTRATION
THE COMMON CENTER
The simplest definition of concentration is the one that appears in the dictionary, namely: gather in a common center
, since it defines both the spiritual and the material. It is enough to consider what is the common center to put the concentration in its right place. That common center is within you and its name is One, whether we call it the name of the Lord, as we read in the book of the prophet Malachi, as to the great Manifestation that will finally be in this world, that there will be a Lord and His name One
, or whether we call it the mathematical one. It is enough that we see the common center of our spiritual thoughts and our material thoughts as one thought, one manifestation.
THE PATH OF CREATION
Concentration is the formative path of creation. Creation is manifested by the power of the divine mind working on thoughts, ordering them and being obeyed, so that they gather around a common center; thus, we have that expression, called Solar System, or a world.
If we turn to the scientific theories of the formation of this universe, we have that nebulous mass that finds its center in some nucleus around which everything is gathered. This formative power of divinity within you is the one that brings everything to its essence. The common center of your being is the essence of God, your divine being. Starting to make your eye fix on that central self, that divine self, is to feel your mastery.
The reason why people are so disturbed, upset, mixed up and unfocused, is because they have forgotten. They have stopped looking at the One, and they must return, and remember the One who is the source of our life; the power that holds us together; the great means by which we can order our lives and manifest the works of God, works of healing, mastery, self-control and restoration of memory. So, you can be a power like the sun, radiating power to transform your whole world, according to your own idea, to the light that dwells in you, bringing forth all that is right and what is a blessing.
AN INDICATOR OF INTELLIGENCE
The power of concentration has always been an indicator of intelligence. It is an indicator of intelligence, whether it is expressed in the animal kingdom or in the human kingdom, in a baby or in Socrates.
When a trainer wants to select intelligent animals, he looks at their power of concentration. A famous dog trainer collected a number of these animals from all over the world. Sometimes they were very ordinary dogs, because he discovered that it wasn't always the best breed of dogs that showed the most intelligence. Sometimes it was just a yellow dog that was the best trick dog. After being with his master long enough to become familiar with his voice, the handler would test his ability to concentrate.
He gathered them together and, lifting some object, demanded the attention of all the dogs towards him. One by one, the dogs looked down, turned their heads away, and sought another interest. Only a few remained alerts and waiting, and these were the dogs the handler chose to perform on his stage.
And so, we can take the selected one. The calf that heeds
... very quickly and very constantly, we have a lot of intelligence. This is also true of ourselves, we find that the times, when we can hold our mind on certain things, are the times of greatest achievement, when we manifest the greatest intelligence, and finally, we will see this a power so supreme that one could, like Socrates, stand in the middle of the market absorbed in a revelation, and even stand for hours.
It is said that this great philosopher once stood for a whole day and night, while the people crowded around him. If you or I were able to stay like this, we might as well present to the world a philosophy like the one he gave. Socrates represents intelligence of the highest degree, and it is expressed in this power of concentration. There is no greater pursuit than that of knowledge and understanding by which you can express your intelligence in concentration.
