    Introduction

December 10, 1973—that was the day I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. That made it possible for the Lord to show me whom I would marry, for man and wife are not to be unequally yoked. That’s when one was saved by Christ and the other was not. This is a true story that began twenty-nine years ago.

Never would I have dreamed of such a journey because of my salvation. I need to be clear. Before all that, I believe with all my heart and faith that everything written herein was necessary, for it was the means that God chose to mold me into the Christian I am today (stronger, having a deeper faith), one that I apply to my life through the principles put forth in God’s word—the Holy Bible. Romans 5:1 reads,

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)

Truly I realize that God wanted me to become a man who can claim this verse as his own and live a truly committed life to Jesus Christ. It is a journey from darkness into light, similar to the journey as mentioned in 1 John 1:5–7:

This then is the message we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

This is a journey to a deeper, stronger, more committed faith—a faith that became completely dependent on God for even life itself.

    An Anxious Call

It all began with a phone call on February 2, 1991. The military operation Desert Storm was in full swing. I was the S-1 Administrative Sergeant doing normal daily duties at the Florida Army National Guard’s 144th Transportation Company’s unit personnel office, which included answering the phone.

The call came around 1030 hours (10:30 a.m.). This is Sergeant Mount, may I help you?

This is Major X from the 28th Transportation Battalion in Germany [I can’t remember his name], the voice on the other line said. Is your commander available?

Hearing those words, I got a bad feeling in my stomach.

No, sir, Major, he’s not available at this time.

Give him this message. I should have heard from him two weeks ago. As a matter of fact, your unit should already be on the way here. Have him call me back.

Yes, sir, as soon as possible, sir.

He gave me the overseas number for the return call. I felt a little worse. My fear had come true—deployment during a wartime operation and separation from home, wife Linda, and family with no guarantee
