Preface
Dear Heavenly Father, Our Creator,
Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, Who gave His life as payment for our sins that we might be reconciled to You.¹ Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.² To You Who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.³ May You bless all who read these words. May they search for You with their whole heart and find You.⁴ May they know Jesus personally as Emmanuel, God with us,
⁵ and know that they are never alone.⁶ May guardian angels protect them⁷ as they war against spiritual wickedness in high places.⁸ You know when Your children sit down and rise up.⁹ You know them intimately by the indwelling Holy Spirit.¹⁰ In Your Book are written all the days that were ordained for them when as yet there was not one of them.¹¹ You know their thoughts.¹² You keep them in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee.¹³ Your eyes move to and fro throughout the earth that You may strongly support those whose heart is completely Yours.¹⁴ Lead them in the Way everlasting.¹⁵ In Jesus’ Holy Name I pray, Amen.

The rocky path down the steep slope was bordered with native weeds and bushes tickling our bare legs. Summer had arrived. Daddy and Mom were at work in town. Though we were still in grade school, we were old enough to be left alone. When our chores were done, I packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and some chips for our picnic. We spread the tattered blanket on sandy soil in the
