Chapter 1—Life on the Boat
There once was a little girl named Jamie who lived on a boat with her grandfather, Joe. Grandpa Joe was very poor and had very little money for food, clothes, or other necessities. Jamie never complained and was happy as long as she was with her grandpa. They would fish together, count the stars at night, gather berries along the riverbed, and sing nursery rhymes. They had a very caring relationship, and the love they had for each other outweighed their hardships.
Grandpa Joe hoped that one day Jamie would find friends to play with. He wished he could buy her some toys, but with the little money he had, he knew that he couldn’t. One night, while Jamie was sleeping, Grandpa Joe decided to make a doll for her. He ripped off a piece of material from one of his shirts and knotted it in such a way it looked just like a little rag doll.
He laid it on Jamie’s pillow so it would be the first thing she saw when she awoke the next morning.
When Jamie’s eyes opened and she saw what her grandpa made for her, she ran to him, hugged him, and said, Grandpa, thank you so much for my new doll. I love it Grandpa, and I love you too.
She decided to name her new doll, Josie. She played with her doll all day and cuddled with it when she went to sleep at night. She would sing to Josie every night before going to sleep.
Grandpa Joe listened outside her little cabin as she sang to Josie and thought to himself, What a beautiful voice Jamie has for such a young child.
Grandpa Joe began to worry about finding some good food for Jamie. The fish were not biting, and all he had left on the boat were some berries they picked the day before. He told Jamie about his dilemma and the food running out.
Jamie said to Grandpa, Don’t worry, Grandpa. We’ll think of something.
While Jamie was singing to her doll, Josie, she came up with a great idea.
She sat on her grandpa’s lap and said, Grandpa, why don’t we dock the boat and go into the next town. I could sing for the people passing by, and maybe they would give us some money to buy food.
Grandpa Joe gave Jamie’s idea some thought and
