About this ebook

Prayer is powerful! In the pages of this book, you can discover some of the things I faced as a foster child when I was part of the system. The apples story in chapter 2 really concludes three or four years later in chapter 5. Did you know I am an answer to prayer? You might be too!

    About the Author

This poem is written in honor of Harlan Stetson Foss, 111, my oldest brother on his death in 1991. Harlan Foss is what he went by professionally; he sang for New York City Opera and various regional companies around the US.

It is to him, Lanny (my brothers and sister often called him Lanny), I dedicate this book!

    No Tears In Our Eyes

Strangers we’ve been, though born of the same blood,

raised in varied places, wondering why, why?

Our lives torn as in a great furious flood,

no tears in our eyes, it is our hearts that cry.

Oh, how brave, what good little soldiers,

we marched to the tune the world for us commanded.

Agencies dictated our lives from file folders, still—

our eyes don’t cry, but the heart cries in secret—so we wouldn’t be reprimanded.

The oldest ponders the question: what did I do wrong?

It must be my fault, he shudders with sad sighs.

Manhood comes with music for a life, but how happy is his song,

no tears in his eyes, but the heart—the heart still cries.

Next in line, another son puzzles over promises broken,

it has been arranged at the home he’ll live with his older brother.

They share time and space, but deep hurts remain unspoken,

no tears in his eyes, but the heart cries for mother.

A girl in the middle, young enough to be aware

everything is upside down, all that is familiar is lost.

Where are the brothers, the mother, the father, the ones who should care?

no tears in her eyes, but the heart cries, why this terrible cost?

There are two more children wandering through the years,

A girl given up as a baby; the link is broken to the rest.

A boy learning on his own, to fight his own fears.

No tear in their eyes, but the heart cries as alone they face life’s test.

With a start that came too early, into adults we now have grown,

a strong thread has been found and starts to tighten.

We are gaining perspective on our past
