This is the true story of my great-great-grandmother. It happens during the Spanish era in the Philippines. She was an heir of a wealthy Spanish businessman who came from Spain and became powerful in politics, becoming governor in the city. She’s the one and only child, with five personal maids. She grew up surrounded with luxury, a woman who was born in privilege, and part of the wealthiest family in the city. She sacrificed all her wealth just to be with her true love. She was born in a mansion, but she embraced a simple life, for a love that tested her life. When one day, her ex-fiancé took revenge and took the love of her life. Her husband disappeared, never to return home, nowhere to be found, the father of her four children. She was still grieving, after the death of her father. How would she tell her children that their father would never come home again? Then one day, a group of men drove them out of the mansion. Everything was taken from her, in front of her eyes, all the wealth that her father had given to her. From riches to rags, now all she had were her four children. Her heart was shattered. She asked herself why all this was happening to her at once. How will she stand the test of time, which changed her life forever? How will she move on and endure with all the heartaches caused by one man she almost married? How will she fight for justice when the one responsible for the disappearance of her husband is too powerful in the society? Her ex-fiancée is now the most powerful in politics, as he became the governor in the land. How will she fight for justice when those people responsible are the ones who are in control?

This story is in loving memory of my grandfather, who died at the age of a hundred years old.

    —Angel Myers

    Epilogue

For four years, Amanda studied at Barcelona, Spain. She has been away from home. Her mother was excited for her to come back home again. She missed those years when she was a little girl growing in the mansion. Her mother’s joy was seen on her face. Her father had another reason for her to stay home. H was scared Amanda would have a boyfriend; those thoughts made him decide for her to continue her education in one of the universities in the city—at home. He also had a plan for her to be introduced to one of his friend’s son, Alejandro; he earned his bachelor’s degree in Europe and was a successful lawyer and businessman. Amanda’s and Alejandro’s fathers had been good friends since they were young, till college, and both grew up in Spain.

Alejandro heard about Amanda, how beautiful she was and a smart young woman. He asked his father to talk to Amanda’s father, to introduce him to her. His father assured him he would talk to Amanda’s father about it. Amanda had no idea what was waiting for her at home in the mansion. Her mother didn’t know the business regarding Alejandro and his father. Amanda was not even home yet, but her father’s plan for her would change their relationship forever as a father and daughter because of one man—Alejandro. Alejandro was a man who wouldn’t let anybody come in his way if he wanted something. He thought everything he wanted, he could get, including Amanda, because he was very wealthy and successful.

Amanda’s mother saw Alejandro and his father regularly in the mansion, but she never asked Amanda’s father about it. She thought her husband had a regular meeting with Alejandro and his father. Alejandro started to be very nice to Amanda’s mother! He brought her dozens of red roses and personally gave it to her; he even talked to her about their businesses. Amanda’s mother was amazed by the way Alejandro was being nice to her. He usually greeted her and then left. This time it was different; he spent some time talking to her. When they were eating dinner, she told Amanda’s father about Alejandro being nice to her, giving her dozens of roses. Amanda’s father complimented Alejandro.

He said, You know, Mama, Alejandro is a good man. I like him for our princess. Amanda’s mother almost choked when she heard it. Is there something wrong, Mama? Amanda’s father asked.

    No, Papa, she said.

You know they’re a perfect match! Amanda’s father told her mother. If they will get married one day, our company will be one. Our wealth will increase all the more. Alejandro is a very good businessman! Tomorrow you will go with me to visit Alejandro’s parents. They invited us for a lunch in their mansion.

    Okay, Papa, she replied.

Poor Amanda, she was not even home, but her father was already putting her future in his hands. Her mother was hoping Amanda would be home soon, after all those years she’d been away. The next day in the mansion of Alejandro’s parents, they had a lunch date. Amanda’s father was very happy talking to his childhood friends. Alejandro’s mother enjoyed talking to Amanda’s mother, showing all the imported stuff they bought in Europe; all their collections and decorations inside the house were bought in Europe. Alejandro’s mother was very proud of all the achievements of his one and only son and two sisters studying in Europe. Amanda’s mother couldn’t say anything. Truly, they were very wealthy. They were one of the wealthiest family in the city, the most influential also. But despite the wealth of Alejandro’s parents, Amanda’s mother was not happy with the thought of pushing Amanda to Alejandro.

While they were eating, they talked about their businesses in the city. Alejandro told Amanda’s father he would love to see one day their company merging together. He would manage it, to increase their wealth even more. Amanda’s father was happy with the idea. Merging would be good, he said to Alejandro.

What do think, Mama? he asked Amanda’s mother.

She answered, It’s your decision, you’re the head of the family. And she just smiled at everyone in the table. After they ate in the mansion of Alejandro’s parents, Amanda’s mother started to think of saving some money. Every day she put aside a big amount of money in a place where her husband couldn’t find at all. She thought it would be much better that she was prepared rather than watch her daughter one day without anything. In her mind, she wanted Amanda to choose whomever she wanted to marry. She saw some of their friends who married by their parents’ choice, how sad it was for those women. She didn’t want it to happen to Amanda! But she was also thinking, who knows, what if Amanda fell in love with Alejandro when they finally meet each other. One way or another, to prepare ahead of time is always good.

When Amanda’s father arrived from work, he started to discuss the coming eighteenth-birthday celebration of Amanda. He wanted to invite ahead of time all his friends, families from Barcelona, Spain, and some of Amanda’s teachers to attend her party. The decorations inside the mansion, what food they would serve, and how many people were invited were prepared. Before Amanda came home, her mother would help her to find her gown in Spain. She would wear a red gown. Amanda’s father told his wife to get her gown too in Spain.

He said, I want you to be beautiful in the most special day of our princess.

In the mansion, the celebrations would be held in the garden; that was the favorite place of Amanda! Her father started to change everything in the garden. He told the gardener to pull all the old plants, and he would hire a man who was very good in doing a landscape. He wanted a perfect place to entertain all the visitors. He wanted real flowers in the aisles entering the gardens, a set of red roses alternate with pink and yellow, all the way to the entrance of the garden. And the surrounding of the gardens must be mixed with white roses and red, because Amanda will be wearing a red gown in the party, and her mother will be wearing a white gown. Amanda’s father imagined how beautiful it would be in the garden during the party. Every day his father checked the progress in the garden, making sure everything turned out perfect for his one and only daughter.

Amanda’s mother was happy watching her husband doing all the preparations. In her heart, she knew he was the best father to Amanda. Even if he was putting Amanda’s future in his hands. She was counting the days till Amanda would be home for her birthday. Everyone inside the mansion was happy and expecting her to come home. They started to clean up her room and decorate it. Her personal maids were happy again to hear she would be home soon. Amanda’s mother started to change everything, from the living room to the kitchen, all the decorations, and put a new one. She added some adornments from Barcelona! It had been a week that they’d been doing cleaning and preparations in the mansion, but it seemed there was still a lot to do. Her mother never got tired doing all the chores on a daily basis, supervising all the maids inside the mansion. There was a joy inside her heart, knowing she was doing it for Amanda! In the garden, it seemed everything was doing fine. All the new roses in the aisle started to bloom. Amanda’s mother smelled the flowers’ scents from the garden; when she opened the windows facing the garden, she breathed deep and smiled.

She said, Papa, you did a good job! Amanda will love it. They are beautiful and smell very good.

Thanks, Mama, I’m doing this for our baby girl! I can’t wait to see her home! he said and continued, Tomorrow I will see the inside of the garden, making sure everything is good. I’m hoping it has started to bloom, the inside plants, so everything is uniform, from the aisle to the inside.

Her mother and father were now preparing to go to Barcelona for Amanda. They had to shop for their gowns and some ornaments for the mansion for her birthday. The next day, they sailed, going to Barcelona. Her parents were very excited to see her. After a long trip, they finally arrived in Spain. Amanda met her parents. Amanda’s grandparents were very happy to see their son visiting again. Amanda and her mother couldn’t stop talking about everything that was happening at home in the mansion. Her mother told her they changed everything in the garden in preparation for her birthday. Amanda thanked her mother. When the dinner was served, Amanda’s father told her she would be surprised at how beautiful her garden was, and she would have all her visitors for her birthday in the garden.

That night, she was the loveliest, most beautiful lady they ever saw in the city. That night, Amanda shone in her beautiful red gown. She danced with her father, then her father introduced her to a young man. His name was Alejandro, and he was the son of a very wealthy merchant, her father’s childhood friend and best friend. Alejandro was the kind of guy who was arrogant and proud. Amanda noticed it right away, even during the first time they met. Alejandro was very proud of everything he did in the city. He graduated magna cum laude in a law school in Europe. After one year, he studied to get a bachelor’s degree in business administration in the same school he graduated as a lawyer. He graduated magna cum laude. When he celebrated his twenty-first birthday, he won in a horse race. Amanda started to get bored talking with him; it was all about him. In her mind, if this guy would ask her father to date her, he would be the most boring guy to be with. In her mind, she thought, You won, Mr. Alejandro’, because you look like your horse! This thought almost made her laugh in front of Alejandro. But she controlled herself. Alejandro told her she had a beautiful smile. Out of all the girls he met, she had the best smile of all. Amanda just smiled. Alejandro started to show his interest in Amanda.

After her debut party, she noticed Alejandro’s father was always with her father in the mansion. During weekends, they got together for a cockfight. One Friday morning, Alejandro just showed up in the mansion. She heard him talking to one of her maids, Maria. Alejandro asked Maria to find Amanda. He brought fresh flowers to her, a dozen red roses. Maria noticed right away that Alejandro had a big interest in Amanda. She ran to Amanda’s room and knocked on her door.

Ms. Amanda! Mr. Alejandro is here looking for you!

When Alejandro saw Amanda approaching the living room toward him, he stood up, and he kissed Amanda’s hands, showing respect to her. And he gave the dozen red roses to her. Amanda loved flowers, but this time, she just gave it to Maria as soon as Alejandro gave it to her. She told Maria to put it in her mother’s room. Alejandro was a little upset when he heard it. He thought, Amanda wants the flowers in her mother’s bedroom? Why? Did she like it or not? But he didn’t want to ask Amanda why; instead, he just keep it in his mind. Anyway, he could ask Amanda’s father anything, because his father and Amanda’s father were best friends. In his mind, Amanda would be his girl one day.

Amanda didn’t show any interest in Alejandro. She got bored talking to him. It was all about him, how he helped his father in growing their business, and his sport, the horse racing. He graduated in one of the most famous law schools in Europe. He was now the lawyer in the family business; after a year practicing law, he decided again to go back to school for business. Amanda’s thoughts were not even there while they were talking. Alejandro asked Amanda if she was going back to Spain. Amanda replied, No! My father wants me to stay here for some reason. Alejandro was happy to hear it. Now he could visit Amanda anytime he wanted, because he had a big favor on his father.

Amanda’s father told her she would continue her education at home because he was scared that his daughter might meet somebody in Spain without him knowing it. He wanted to see Amanda every day. He became a very strict father, to the point of hiring bodyguards. This upset Amanda’s mother, but she couldn’t do anything. Amanda didn’t like the idea of being watched day
