    First, I want to recognize my beautiful wife of over fifty years, Millie. Why she stayed with me this long has been a mystery to me. She could have had most any man she wanted, but for some reason, she stayed with me. If you know me, then you understand why it’s a mystery. She gave me a beautiful daughter, and that daughter and my son-in-law gave me two wonderful grandkids. Millie was my trusted counsel, my lover, my strength when it was needed, and my very best friend. To know love as I have all these years is a gift from God.

    I also wanted to give recognition to some great guys.

    Michael Immler is a retired air force colonel lawyer and deputy director of a very large worldwide organization. This overachiever has been my friend and buddy for over thirty years. He is, without a doubt, the best counselor I’ve ever known. He can make a difficult decision (legal or otherwise) seem simple. This Christian man has been counsel to hundreds, maybe thousands, over the years and expects nothing back for his advice and knowledge. When coach Jack Clark told his players Be entitled to nothing and grateful for everything, he must have known Mike. I’m just not sure where I would be now if not for him.

    Paul Krieger was a friend when I needed a friend most. This proud Berliner was a good counselor and approached life in a matter-of-fact, common-sense way. A Christian who recently accomplished his long dream of becoming a United States citizen (legally, I might add). This country is better off with him as a citizen.

    John Masterson is a retired army colonel and was the best boss I’ve ever had. It has been a pleasure knowing him these past twenty-five years or so, and I’m proud to call him a close and dear friend. He is levelheaded and extremely smart. This Christian soldier has integrity and morals. If the entire world was like him, we would not need an army. I’ve learned a lot from him and still do today.

    Pete Sercy is the brother I never had. We work together, play together, and live life the best we knew how. We’ve been close for over forty years. We were assigned together first in Fort Worth, Texas, then Germany and Dallas. Within a year, we both retired in the Dallas area where we and our families live today. I look forward to our Friday night dinners. Another Christian in my life, and I’m lucky to have him.

    A special recognition is given to Mike’s wife Jeanine, Paul’s wife Dianna, John’s wife Susan, and Pete’s wife Marsha. As with Millie, they have put up with a lot, given in when they probably shouldn’t, and been there when it really mattered. I love you, ladies. God bless you all.

    I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the many family and friends who have been strength to both Millie and me. I can’t imagine life without you and we are eternally grateful for your love, your kindness and your friendship. God bless you all.

    Introduction

    I wrote this book of opinions based on life events and hard facts. This is not a spur of the moment thing but an accumulation of notes I’ve made over the past several decades. Part of the reason for this book was so my grandchildren could understand who I am and why I thought it necessary to explain the seriousness of the attempts to destroy the best religion and government the world has even known.

    I was raised in a small town (population approximately 80) in Middle Tennessee about three miles from the Kentucky border. That area is now known as the Land Between the Lakes. That town was Model, Tennessee. My first memoires were an outdoor toilet, two wood burning stoves that heated four rooms, and a small Baptist Church. My Sunday school teachers were Aunt Evin (my mother’s sister) and Aunt Ruth (my dad’s sister). The hellfire and brimstone preachers were more a hindrance than help. I learned everything I needed to know from my two aunts. I would be remiss if I did not mention my mother who was also instrumental in reinforcing what Aunt Evin and Aunt Ruth taught me. My dad, although not an avid church goer, was also helpful because I knew him as a Christian. After all his grandfather was a Baptist minister.

    How Model got its name:

    Model went through a few names. (Pryor’s Creek, Great Western, and Bass) The Great Western Furnace was established about 1854 for the iron industry to provide Pig Iron. (it only operated a couple of years) The Furnace was about 85 feet tall and about 50 feet square. It still stands today and we lived directly in front of it. After the Civil War a barrel stave company (Cincinnati Cooperage Company) intended to set up a model city that would have been the standard for all cities in the country. Of course, that did not happen but it did well for a while. It had the first high school in the county and had its own physician.

    Model Tennessee no longer exists. In 1965 the federal government saw fit to buy out everybody and send them packing. Now the Largest inland peninsula in the country (170,000 acres and 300 miles of undeveloped shore line) has no residents and waits for 2 million visitors a year.

    Living in Model, Tennessee shaped and molded who I am today. We moved from there (when I was 11 years old) to a larger town and a lot more conveniences. (Thank you, God) My 10 years in Model were a series of life changing events.

    A Model Conservative is more than a play on words. There were not many republicans much less Conservatives in Model or even Stewart County. As it says on Wikipedia¹under the Politics section:

    "The county is part of Tennessee’s 8th congressional district, and traditionally votes Democratic. However, Stewart County has been trending Republican in recent presidential elections. In the 2008 presidential election, John McCain received approximately 53.7% of the vote.[13] This made him the first Republican to carry the county. Stewart County was the sole county in Tennessee that had never voted for a Republican presidential candidate in the last 100 years.[14] It was also the first time a Democratic candidate lost the county since the 1968 win by George Wallace of the American Independent Party."

    To vote against a Democrat President only twice in the last 100 years and those two times were for George Wallace and against Barrack Obama is not trending republican. I think we all know what it is.

    How did this young boy from Model escape this type atmosphere and become a Christian Conservative? I will attempt to answer that question.

    I did not go to college but rather choose to go directly into the workforce after a rough ride in high school. My grades were deplorable and I had to go to summer school to get my diploma. Consequently, I was told by my advisor not to waste my parent’s money by trying to go to college. He said, get yourself a job at the car wash and do them a favor. Bad news was he was right. Good news was.... he was right.

    The last day of summer school I was walking out of the building when the Asst. Principal (I really owe this guy my life) appeared beside me and walked along toward his office. He said, are you going to college? I said no. He said, what are you going to do? I said; guess I’ll look for a job at the car wash that was Mr. Wonderful’s recommendation (I changed the name to protect the ill-advised advisor). He stopped dead in his tracks and asks, did he say that? I said, yes, my grades are so bad I probably will have a difficult time getting a job anywhere. He said, come with me. We went into a converted class room next to the Principal’s office. There were rows of filing cabinets. He searched through one of the drawers and retrieved my file. He said, I’m not supposed to show you this but look at that. I said, what am I looking at? (Yes, my make-up class in summer school was senior English) He said, you’re looking at a document that proves you can do anything you want to do. I’m not sure what happened to me at just that moment but I am sure it changed my life forever. It improved my self-esteem, my attitude, and caused me to think positive from then on. This was another major life altering event. My college days were spread out over several years. I attended several colleges as we traveled to five different states and one foreign country. (For your information, I made a solid B in Composition I and Composition II at Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska, so there)

    There were other significant life altering events for me as well. The day I married the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, the day my daughter was born, and indeed the days my grand children were born. I’ve had several life altering events as I traveled from Tennessee to Texas with several stops in between. It hasn’t been all smooth air but sometimes a little rough air makes the flight more interesting, not to mention all I’ve learned from it.

    I don’t expect this book to be life altering for anyone but hopefully the readers will understand the subjects from my point of view and then understand why I say I had a Model life and I’m a Model Conservative.

    Chapter 1

    Is There a God?

    God cannot use you as He wishes until you come into the fullness of His Glory. Do not get alarmed, my friend, when doubts creep in. That is old Satan. Pray, pray, pray. (George Washington Carver)

    This is a tough question. How do you prove such a thing? The word faith means a belief that is not based on proof. However, it can also mean a strong or unshakeable belief in something, especially without proof or evidence. A good friend of mine, Bruce Coltharp, retired US Air Force full colonel chaplain (1931–2014), in one of his messages, asked a rhetorical question: "How many of you have never had doubts that there is a God? He then immediately said, Those of you who answered you have never questioned the existence of God either didn’t understand the question, or you are lying. What an awesome God we have that lets us ponder his existence. Most Christians agree, however, that after you go through those times of doubt, you emerge even stronger in your beliefs. I find one thing fascinating about Christians: never will you hear one say Prove to me there is a God or ask What makes us right and the atheists wrong?" If you are a Christian, you have no need to question other Christian’s beliefs. God gives us free will and free thought. However, he watches to see how we use it.
