Chapter 1
The Castle
There was an island in the middle of the ocean that no one knew about. Every time it rained, the biggest rainbow anyone had ever seen would appear and linger on for days. Some people would even call it the rainbow island due to the radiant glow the rainbows would leave behind. The island was covered by tall mountains and thick forests. Lush green vegetation and beautiful flowers grew throughout the land.
If you caught the wind blowing just right, you could smell the sweet aroma of the flowers that the people of the kingdom had planted in their yards or on the side of the dirt roads, which led to the castle and connected the towns throughout the kingdom. On the south side of the island, behind the castle, the beach radiated with white sand. This was where all the kids in the kingdom spent most of their time—swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles, and pretending they were knights.
The ocean was blue as the sky on a sunny day. You could practically see the sunrays dancing on top of the water as the waves washed ashore. The water was so clear you could see the ocean floor. The king and the queen loved taking the royal fishing boat on a spin around the island. The kids played games by the beach, one of their favorite games was spotting and naming the type of fish and turtles swimming about.
Just off the sandy shore, the kingdom’s castle stood tall. It had many colorful large flags, which carried the kingdom’s royal coat of arms—two eagles facing each other, hanging from the windows and down the side. In this castle lived a handsome little boy. He had blond hair, baby blue eyes, and the biggest smile on his face all the time. He was the little prince of this kingdom. As young as he was, everyone in the kingdom loved him for who he was and not just because he was the king’s son.
The prince was an early bird. He would wake up every morning at the crack of dawn. On this day, he woke up especially early because he knew it was his special day. As he opened his eyes, he looked around, admiring all the toys he had neatly placed throughout his room. One of his favorite toys was a wooden horse that his friend Mr. Hobby had carved out of a cherry tree branch that he’d removed while pruning the tree in the spring past.
Mr. Hobby lived on the castle grounds around the corner from the stable, in the cutest little house that the king had built for him; his wife, Mrs. Hobby; and their little son, Jerald. Mr. and Mrs. Hobby were the caretakers of the castle. They made sure the castle was always in tip-top shape. Mr. Hobby was also in charge of the horses, chickens, cows, and sheep belonging to the kingdom.
The prince knew it was time to wake up because he could hear the horses trotting form the stable to the feeding ground. Extra special care was given to the prince’s
