    The Righteousness of Christ

A little girl was playing in the front yard alone, when suddenly a man appeared on the scene, riding on an ice-cream wagon cycle. He gave the child a Popsicle, then went into the house and gave her mother an ice-cream sandwich. The child was very happy with the gift. Later, the child recalled that the man and her mother were leaving, going to the courthouse to be married.

The child and her mother were living on Abbie Street in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the year 1940. One night, the child woke up out of a sound sleep due to some type of argument and was so frightened that she ran out of the house through the back door, in the middle of the night clear across to the neighbor’s house, then hid herself under the neighbor’s house for what ended up being a long period of time. She then entered back into the house and found it to be silent and that no one had apparently missed her.

Again, the child awoke early in the morning when she discovered that her older brother was urinating on her younger brother’s side of the bed. She was lying on a cot in the same room they all shared. Then their mother woke up and discovered that the bed was wet. The older brother made a lie on the younger brother, and because of that lie, the younger brother was spanked. The little girl who witnessed the accusation did not speak up; therefore, he was punished unjustly. Now this was a family of six people. It was made up of three boys and one girl. They lived in a three-roomed shotgun house that consisted of two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a toilet. The girl was called Little Sister, the baby boy was called Little Brother, and the oldest boy was called James. Little Sister recalled being happy during that time period.

Later, Little Sister recalled that a neighbor who lived in the rear of the house told her that the lady herself would become ill and that she would give the child some of the gifts that she had received. She said that there were a lot of gifts, fruits, etc. The child wondered how she knew that information. Sure enough, the woman’s name was Ala Mae who got sick and called for Little Sister’s mother. When Little Sister’s mother, Addie, showed up, Ala Mae threw a pail of urine on her. The mother returned wet and cried to the child.

Little Sister’s mother was married to Henry who, she later on discovered, was her stepdaddy. This girl was apparently a loner, for she was playing in the backyard when she saw Ms. Ola Mae slipping into the yard with a butcher knife. Lil Sis ran into the back door and warned her mother about the lady. The mother went into the room, and by being a strong-built lady, she was able to close the front door on the lady’s hand where the knife was. She managed to escape that crisis. Later, the mother sent her two younger children (Lil Brother and Lil Sis) after a twenty-five-pound sack of ice. There were no refrigerators then, only ice boxes; however, they did have gas and electricity. They used to carry it on a broomstick. The icehouse was located on Pierre Avenue, which seemed to be a long trip for them.

Arriving at the icehouse, Lil Brother refused to carry the ice, for he thought it was too heavy for him. Lil Sis carried the ice herself. She managed to get home on her own, but when she got there, she passed out due to exhaustion. Lil Sis recovered in a doctor’s office and was asked to make her first decision (if she wanted to stay in the hospital or go home). The child did not recall her age, for she was very young. This was before she had ever attended school. Of course, she chose to go home. She remembered being bandaged up and was told that she had broken her body down. She had to lie on the hardwood floor for a while until she recovered.

Another incident stood out of Lil Sister’s memory. Her brothers James and John L were very smart little boys. They would go out and work to help ends meet. She recalled one windy Saturday morning at Abbie Street Grocery, where a group of men met around a huge fire that they had built. John L turned his back to the fire as the men did; but James, the older brother, stood, facing the fire when, unfortunately, John L’s leg caught on fire. He panicked and took off running, then James noticed what had happened, and he ran after him. James hollered at John L to jump into the ditch, but John L did not hear him and ran faster. The wind kept the fire blaze going when James overran John L and smothered the fire out. James had saved his brother’s life. At this time, Lil Sister was in the first grade, John L was in the third grade, and James was in the fifth grade. John L stayed in the
