About this ebook

One of Many in the Universe refers to the planet Earth being one of many planets bearing intelligent life. This story begins with the first planet ever to have intelligent life, its inhabitants never suffering any aggression in any era of its evolution through armed conflict or crime. Their populace has been peaceful since the very beginning as a bipedal species, and they are the most powerful living things in the universe because of true civilization. They are not powered by magic or mutation, but by their very advanced technologies, creating extremely strong, durable, long-living bodies designed to contend with the harsh conditions of space travel. There are no last of their kind or secret select few with incredible powers; all the planet's people share these enhancements to their biology and are limited only by their interests and creativity. The problem that occurs is when one of the planet's citizens decides that despite all they have seen in the universe, their planet should develop weapons for defense against the potential unknowns. This proposal is met with staunch opposition, as it's believed that any space travelers that can approach from beyond what they've explored should have similar advances brought about by similar peace. The unlikelihood of a battle negates the need for weapons, something never necessary in this world. With a small contingent of like-minded developers who hear his idea and concur, the weapons are built, regardless of its unpopularity, on another planet in their solar system. His intuition is correct, as their world is approached by a hostile invading force. A war ensues, and the entire planet unifies in support of the defense efforts, the first battle of any kind this world will ever know. After a lopsided victory via superior technology, the world celebrates a new hero, but the battle changes his outlook on the entirety of the universe. He now knows there are multitudes of peaceful worlds that may face hostile invasion from the unknown depths of space. With global support, he embarks upon a mission to travel throughout the universe in search of hostile worlds that exhibit the potential to leave their atmosphere, accompanied by their savagery. His mission spreads carnage upon those planets he deems hostile, to prevent the potential attacks against peaceful worlds that are found and preserved. He comes in conflict with his daughter, who is born and raised during his travels, and later his son, born after his daughter's defiance, after they are exposed to and horrified by their father's mission to ensure peace in the universe.

    The Perfect Planet

The planet Oneda. The first planet in the universe ever to have intelligent living organisms to walk upon its surface. In the infinite, boundless universe, if time could be measured by the survival of a species that keeps it, no other living being will have immortalized itself in time as the inhabitants of Oneda have. The planet can attribute its success to the true intelligence of its master, the populace having never suffered aggression against one another in any way. The people of Oneda have lived in peace throughout their entire history as a species. Its people have advanced through sharing technological progress worldwide. By doing so, they have tapped nearly every potential ability their vast imaginations can create and surpassed countless limitations set forth on the species by its creator. The boundaries of mortality have been all but eliminated. And traveling through space is as easy as traveling on the planet’s surface.

In the earliest phases of development as bipeds, when caves and forest nests were their primary habitat, Onedans communicated with incredible intellect and lived from the land. Incidents of animal attack and disease were the only things that ended Onedans’ lives before a natural death of old age. Different tribes and families would meet by incident of exploration. Unfamiliar with the faces, the different families knew that danger and sustenance came from those on four or more legs, not on two. The inquisitive approach to others led early man to what would continue to be the strongest and most advantageous peculiarity of Onedans: the ability to live in peace with those who are unknown.

Hunting techniques, poisonous insects, animals, and plants were shown to the outside tribes of families familiar with them. They would then form larger tribes when the families merged. The tribes became colonies so large that it attracted other outsiders with the noise and light from fire. They were greeted and welcomed. Meetings like these took place all over the world. Onedans, in their early phases, existed in a partnership against the wild. They gained dominion over their world with their minds against the teeth and power of larger carnivores. With tools and tactics, they seized their place at the top of the food chain, to ensure their survival. The only violence in Onedan history was against animals for food and survival.

Fast-forward to when Onedans began to challenge and travel across their massive oceans. When the foreigners docked on soil other than their own, they were met with the same warmth as all those born of that land. Travel and trade became a mainstay worldwide. Trade of the mastery of tools and use of the environment. Animals indigenous to certain parts of the world, spices to flavor them when butchered, and different wines (nonalcoholic!) were how members of different continents shared their culture with one another. Early Onedans would lay the groundwork for what would later give them their incredible technology. Sharing and trading tools and resources from different parts of the world.

Further into the future, the Onedans’ use of tools was enhanced by the discovery of electronics. Complex engines for the propulsion of conveyances were devised and improved constantly. Gravity suffered its first defeat at the hands of Onedans, when they began to travel through their skies by flight. Airplanes became the preferred method of long-distance travel, and the ability to fly with these massive machines expanded the imaginations of the Onedans tenfold. Fast-forward further and the Onedans would defy the limits of their atmosphere.

The first steps in space exploration technology brought death in great numbers to the Onedans. Unforeseen conditions in the final frontier and theoretical equipment were the cause of numerous tragic trips to space. As the Onedans were ever advancing, their losses of life in space simply gave the scientist motivation to make tremendous improvements. The Onedans would locate any available recoverable wreckage and comrades. Every weakness of the failed spaceships was meticulously examined, until the causes for failure were found and completely eliminated. This was a worldwide effort that reflected what began and continued to bring Oneda its spectacular advances: intercontinental partnerships to improve existing technologies and develop new advances.

As improvements in the construction of Onedan spacecrafts became improved to the point that they were no longer a problem, the speed at which they traveled became one. Onedans never sat still while there was an issue they felt required addressing. They felt that propulsion required too much fuel, so they revolutionized how they moved through space by studying gravity and magnetism. These elements broke every reasonable method of high-speed movement to oblivion and, after generations of advances, brought Onedans to a new era in high-speed space travel.

The speed of Onedan spacecraft brought upon greater challenges. Propulsion-based technology was eclipsed when the Onedans began to make use of the elements gravity and magnetism. Without gravity and drag to encumber the movement of spacecrafts, the speeds at which they could travel became immeasurable. This made space debris a problem. A simple floating rock would become extremely dangerous if it would be struck by an object while traveling beyond the speed of light.

Technology and exploration has always inspired the inhabitants of Oneda. Most of their great advances came from the necessity of coping with the vast distances and harsh environments of space. Also, the Onedans had tools and techniques for mining materials from space and distant planets. The dense matter of flying rock and distant planets, the metallic and crystallic elements therein were collected for tests and used for elemental blending. This gave Oneda’s scientists the imagination to more efficiently handle the materials. This, of course, led to experiments to develop technology capable of crushing and melting certain metals instantly. This was done by manipulating the density of the elements to harden and soften them. With this coupled with powerful lasers mounted to the ships, the Onedans greatly reduced the likelihood of space debris collisions. On the other hand, their technology also permitted the hardening of most elements blended as alloys to build nearly everlasting structures and spacecrafts.

The hazards of space travel and the deaths caused by it emboldened the Onedans. It brought upon refining techniques that created unbreakable metallic alloys that protected them from space. Inevitably, it also brought upon theories, experiments, and eventually, advancements in hyperbionics. Why only protect the body with space vessels when the body itself could be made to endure the conditions faced in space? The very bodies of the Onedans could become technological platforms that were powerful and designed especially for space exploration. Their bodies would have abilities limited only by their imaginations. Hyperbionics would be the ultimate blend of organics and technology.

Through trial, error, and nearly fanatical experimental developments, a material was developed that was resistant to any amount of natural heat intensity and impervious to almost any impact. Onedans cracked the elemental codes for what made hard things hard and how to amplify the density of any element. The manipulation of elements to create highly durable metallic alloys was archaic in comparison. The material was also surprisingly flexible, as they also discovered how to give the material elastic properties. Its nontoxic qualities made it ideal for protection through space exploration as an armor that could be worn, which gave its wearer immunity from the harsh environments in the universe. It was refined into fine fibers. It became one of the biggest discoveries in Oneda’s history and would change everyone and everything forever. This was the first step in the direction to make Onedan people resistant to the dangers of deep space.

The Onedan scientists had already blended several metallic elements that made an alloy strong enough for the space vehicles to travel through space at nearly unlimited speeds. Genetic experiments were conducted to determine if it was possible that a person’s body could be constructed of the material. If it was to be blended with certain chemical compounds in the body, could it progress through the stages of growth from an embryo to an infant to a grown adult? Through centuries of research, breakthrough after breakthrough enabled the scientists of Oneda to blend the material on a cellular level with a living being. The material would stretch and strengthen as a person grew and would strengthen through a person’s life span, which, with the material, could last almost indefinitely.

In order to generate the power needed to function and control the body, its blood would be replaced with the chemical composition and energy of blue suns, the purest and most powerful suns in the universe. The material could already contain the energy and store it. Using chemical components of a star as blood presented a host of numerous challenges. Onedans stabilized the fission reactions enough to control it as a power source for a multitude of commonly used items. However, the body, depending on its activities, could destabilize the fission reactions within it if the body was physically stressed. This complication could be dealt with, and the threat it posed was minimal. However, the risk was still potentially life-threatening. The benefit of a living being with such blood: the heat and energy from it provided just enough damage for the body to stretch and develop. Through dedicated developers, time, and Onedan problem-solving intellect, the perfect conditions for the regulation of blue sun blood and the strength of the body worked as theorized. To have blue suns’ chemical and electronic composition used as a power source for a living body stands as Oneda’s most spectacular technological achievement.

Blue suns were galactic anomalies composed of not only combustible gasses but also highly volatile, extremely powerful electronic charges, its heat so immense that everything orbiting it would never develop into what could be considered a planet. Its gravitational disruption was also more intense than any other type of star. It possessed both chemical and electronic energies that were the most powerful in the universe. Blue suns even affected the large rocks orbiting them, making them very dense metallic and crystallic blobs rich in the hardest materials found in the universe. The conditions surrounding blue suns were too intense for the planets orbiting them to bear life. Onedans’ discovering these giant balls of energy started them toward technological greatness. Their handling of its power placed them far beyond any other living being born in the universe.

Onedans were master biologist, experts in every function of the body. The advances the scientists foresaw were not simply to improve what the body did but also to redesign it from scratch to do extraordinary things. Creating a body that was everlasting and resilient to all forms of harsh space conditions. Every function of the body’s components was examined. The new body would completely change the body’s internal organs to run more efficiently and control completely different functions. Geneticists did not use artificial clones to generate the new body. The new era of Onedan would not be entirely composed of lab embryos; instead, a living woman, Nyna, volunteered to be inseminated with what would be the next level of the Onedan living experience. The processes of the pregnancy and the stages of growth were carefully monitored. It lasted ten times longer than a normal pregnancy, with the mother in a medically induced and maintained coma the entire time. At the end of the development, a beautiful baby girl was born to a mother who made the ultimate sacrifice to the furtherance of her species. Nyna would be one of the most historic women in Onedan history. Only to be eclipsed by her daughter, perhaps. The meeting was awkward in that the newborn infant did not cry; she simply scanned the room for perhaps who would be her parents.

The deliverer slapped the baby on the buttocks.

The child responded in a muttered baby voice, Why did you strike me?

    Your name will be Nania.

    Onedans successfully developed hyperbionics.

As a young girl, Nania, with her new Onedan body was put through rigorous testing. To see how she, and all Onedans to follow would handle outer space. All tests were handled with little effort. The new body surpassed every theoretical task it was designed for and took Onedan technology to new heights. The girl smiled through all the testing; she never felt the mildest discomfort while doing things in space that would be impossible for bare flesh.

As a young woman, Nania was still tested and became a leader of experiments herself. She assisted in harvesting raw materials from foreign solar systems that would bring improvements to her offspring when it was time. Tests continued through the life spans of her original parents. Nania worked on future enhancements, with generations of her family tree still confound to ordinary flesh, from her great-grandparents to what would have been her great-grandchildren had she bred them. The endless experiments yielded success in improving the original hyperbionic design. Every new Onedan would be an improvement of their parents. Nania would inevitably contribute to the cause of hyperbionics by helping breed the next generation of Onedans herself.

Nania’s pregnancy would prove complicated and was the first failure of the new body. Her reproductive organs functioned with relative commonality to their original flesh design but were changed to support giving birth to a bionic-enhanced embryo. When grown into the stages of adulthood, the reproductive organs were too hard to support pregnancy. Onedans would devise a compound to remedy this issue, but it would endanger the mother. The discussion of the matter was controversial, until Nania herself insisted that reproduction be a careful decision for new mothers. Also, how else would the population be regulated if it was unknown how long an Onedan would live with the new body? So from her own words, the only weakness of Onedans would remain to serve a purpose, and reproduction became regulated among Onedans. These rules were emplaced and strictly enforced after the population of hyperbionic Onedans outnumbered those made of flesh. Hyperbionics was a phenomenal success.

Hyperbionics was the pinnacle of Onedan technology. Although the enhancements of the bionics had mechanical characteristics, there was nothing robotic in appearance to the new bodies. If an original Onedan and one enhanced by hyperbionics stood side by side, the muscularity of the bionic body would stand out, but little else. The new Onedan bodies also behaved like flesh, although there was no longer anything on the body that could be defined as flesh. Their bodies proved indestructible to the conditions they faced in space. The energy regulators, which were made of many of the new internal organ components for powering the body, proved very effective for circulating power though the bodies of Onedans. Their physical strength was remarkable. Every single muscle fiber on its own was an individual contributor to the body’s power and durability. They were even designed to contract differently to take full advantage of the extremely strong composition they were made from. This gave Onedans incalculable strength and speed. All their technological advancements became applicable to their bodies by its modular design. The only thing that could appear to damage an Onedan would be caused by a body composed of the same material with the same abilities, engaging in combat with one another. This was highly unlikely among the peaceful inhabitants of Oneda, who would never engage in conflicts that would cause harm to any other person on their planet.

Hyperbionics placed Onedans beyond the scope of other living organisms. It separated them as a unique species that was still composed of organic matter, but that matter was nearly indestructible. The supplemental abilities that complemented their strength were a feat never accomplished by any other living organism and were nothing short of incredible. Their place as first in the universe, and their history of peace, gave them limitless freedom to advance and evolve. Like all other Onedan technology, their bodies were limited only by the imagination of its owner. Blue sun blood gave the body unique abilities inherent in the power of the sun. Gravity and magnetism also flowed as forces through the body that could be regulated and controlled. This gave the Onedans the gift of flight. Most of the advances in hyperbionics were based on survival in space. The ability to fly and the body’s independence to oxygen allowed Onedans to explore space with no special equipment or vessels. They advanced to the point that their bodies could travel as fast as their spacecrafts.

Onedan minds could deduce advanced calculations, process immeasurable amounts of data in milliseconds, and store memories better than any other planet’s most advanced computers. It was not just their bodies they sought to improve, but also their intellect. The mind was more difficult to enhance than the body. Onedans cracked the anatomic code for what centers of the brain did what. Finding ways to blend brain cells with the fiber-blended material used to strengthen their bodies was indeed difficult. However, like every other mystery proposed to Onedan minds, after centuries of trial, error, research, and development, Onedans were able to amplify their already-impressive intellect. Even the way their brains worked, its memory, and the speed to retain and deduce information—immeasurable. The speed with which Onedans could process information was also necessary to have swift reflexes when moving at space travel speeds. Intellect was equally shared among all Onedans, with an exceptional few with vast imaginations.

Astronomy on the planet Oneda is at the forefront of its citizens’ interests. Technology from the planet can bring its inhabitants to limitless distances. None, however, have been interested in traveling outside a boundary set just as a precautionary measure, except when the edges of the boundaries are expanded through telescopic exploration. Nearly every Onedan female bears a name beginning with the letter N, to honor the first Onedan woman to sacrifice herself for Onedan advancement. Also her daughter, who became the first Onedan to enjoy the power of hyperbionics, the second mother of the next stage in Onedan evolution.

    Chapter 2

    Vadion

Despite the vastness of the universe, the majority of the Onedan populace cannot imagine any intelligent life in distant galaxies with like advances to theirs that do not live as they do in peace. One resident Oneda citizen, who’s begun to suspect the existence of hostile intelligent life-forms, is one of the planet’s leading astronomers and master inventors, Vadion. Vadion is directly responsible for the planet’s ability to find the rarest and most abundant energy resource in the universe much easier, blue stars. Vadion was first most accomplished in his ability to magnify distant images. He invented a telescope that could detect and distinguish energy signatures, which aided in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of different stars. Vadion even refined the processes of crystal and metallic alloy blending, giving Onedans alloys they could count on to resist the extreme temperatures and forces inside the universe’s most powerful supernovas.

Vadion is not a man of much excitement or emotional reaction. He is totally dedicated to breaking ground with his discoveries and imagination. He is tall and muscular, more so than many others on the planet satisfied with the incredible strength they were born with. Vadion had actually strengthened his body by moving enormous mountains and structures, even space debris, fully exploiting the nearly limitless strengths that technological evolution has given to his species. His light-brown skin is shaded slightly darker than that of many others from Oneda because of his many experiments with foreign stars and physical exertion. The occasion that his stiff exterior flexes a bit is when he devotes time to his beautiful wife, Nyana. She is the only person that sees a side of him that is not as empty and serious as when he interacts with many others. She is very funny and joyful. She has an intense love for her husband and will do anything for him.

Forever active, Vadion does not spend the time with his wife that she would like him to. She travels with him from time to time, but it’s mostly as though she isn’t with him. Nyana knows that her husband’s mind is in constant motion, so much so that they rarely spend time at the home they built together.

On one rare occasion when the couple is at home, Nyana and Vadion finally share some deep thoughts with each other. Vadion looks through his telescope and sighs. Vadion’s wife can tell that he is perplexed.

    Find something new?

Nothing unusual. There are events in the universe taking place far beyond what I can see sitting here.

I was beginning to believe that with everything you’ve discovered and invented, nothing was beyond your observation.

The universe is infinite, Nyana. It has no borders. The only limit of the universe is the life spans of its living occupants. The space between us and most of the other life-forms is the only defense we have if there are hostile extraterrestrials.

    Hostile life-forms?

Is that so difficult to believe? With as much space as there is, there is room for life-forms that may not travel through the universe as we do in peace. They may be opposites of us and may have propensities for violent behavior. We have the ability to see and reach very deep into space, but even we haven’t seen everything. The violent species we have observed, dismissed as too primitive to ever leave far enough from their atmosphere to threaten us. In some instances, this is true. Nevertheless, it would be arrogant of us to believe that in this universe, considering its size, we alone enjoy the ability to travel through space with impunity. And that anyone with this ability would only travel in peace.

This is something you have seen?

    This is something I believe.

Nyana hears her husband, but he fades into his usual ambitious rant to her. She respects and admires his thoughts, but he is not saying something she wishes to hear. There will never be an end to Vadion’s ambition or his feelings of never having done enough. Nyana knows it’s in his nature. She spends a lot less time with her husband than she wishes to, but she also realizes the benefits of the time he invests in his works. If he cannot slow his mind down enough to share more of his time with his wife, perhaps she can persuade him to share a part of himself with something that comes from the both of them, a child. Nyana has endless love and support for her husband. Anyone watching him can clearly see that he has many other great things to accomplish. If he refuses to recognize the scope of his accomplishments, Nyana feels that, at the very least, they can reap the benefits of his planet’s recognition of his merits.

Vadion your mind, your thoughts are in constant motion. You are never going to be satisfied with any of the great things you accomplish. You will continue to think of new things to endeavor. By the time you finally think that you’ve contributed enough to be satisfied, we will be too old to enjoy our children.

Although both Vadion and Nyana have very long yet to live, Nyana’s tone is not one of a sarcastic exaggeration.

Nyana, we are still very young, and we will see many more millennia.

I don’t want to wait many more millennia before bearing offspring. Since my husband is too busy helping to make the planet more and more advanced, perhaps I can devote my time showing my love to him by raising his child.

Vadion stares at his wife, considering the risk she seems more than willing to face. They are both relatively young, much younger than the typical age when other Onedans consider procreation. Vadion wants a child and wants to be a participant in raising the child, especially because he wants to pass on his knowledge to his offspring, so that they can benefit from his example and teachings.

You have accomplished enough to have ten children, Vadion.

You would not survive reproducing more than three or four.

But I love you enough to give you as many offspring as you desire. Not everyone is privileged with the authorization of conception as you and I. You have earned it. It is also a great way for you to experience the payoff of all the hard work you’ve done besides the isolation you so enjoy.

Nyana holds out her hand to her husband, calling him away from his work. He looks at her, then back to the telescope, and she holds out her other hand. Vadion rises from his chair and takes his wife by her hands. Nyana embraces Vadion and leans her head against his chest.

We would have a beautiful daughter. Vadion looks down at his wife.

    I love you.

I love you. Vadion holds his wife tightly but looks back to his telescope.

    * * *

Vadion and his wife stand before the Procreation Authorization Committee (PAC), the group that is responsible for determining if anyone on the planet has accomplished enough or is old enough to have offspring. Because Onedan life spans are so long, reproduction is regulated to prevent overpopulating. The criteria are strict, but childbearing is an honor bestowed upon those who have outstanding achievements. Vadion has had numerous invitations to go before them with his successes, and everyone on the committee is familiar with his name. Vadion would disregard the invitation, figuring he has many more things to do.

The committee members address the couple with great delight.

Vadion and Nyana, long have we awaited to see a duplicate of you two. Nyana laughs. Vadion smiles. You have finally dragged him from his telescope just to enjoy one of our planet’s greatest honors.

    Literally, Nyana responds.

Vadion? Are you sure there isn’t a few more things you would like to do today before being approved to honor us all with an offspring?

    Don’t tempt him! Nyana exclaims.

Vadion says, Not at the moment.

The committee members must sign off in a majority of the ten of them, of 70 percent. The members all sign the license and pass it down the line to the last member, who is joking with Vadion and his wife. Nine signatures! I don’t even have to sign this. The last member sings it as he fires off yet another comical remark.

Nyana is happy and responds to the humorous sentiments. Vadion simply politely smiles. He will enjoy this occasion of stepping away from his work to have an intimate vacation with his wife. But there is no escape for his mind from his idea of an impending threat lurking beyond their skies. The last member signs the license and reaches for a small bottle. The bottle contains a capsule that contains the necessary chemicals to prepare Nyana’s body for pregnancy. Her face brightly lightens when she sees the bottle, and she is anxious to grab it. Go! Vadion joyfully taps his wife to receive the reproduction package, the license, the bottle, and a program that explains to them the potential risks to a female during the reproduction process. It also congratulates them and explains to them the rules of more offspring and that the first must be a female.

Nyana snatches the packet and jumps on her husband with a hug. The committee members stand and applaud. We’ll prefabricate a copy of that for the rest of your offspring, if you like.

Maybe one more, Nyana answers as she hangs from her husband.

Vadion and Nyana leave the PAC in a conveyance they normally would not need, but it shows to everyone outside it that its occupants have received approval to become parents. It’s a ceremonial thing. The becoming of parents on the planet Oneda is such a rare and celebrated occasion that new parents are often publicized and made celebrities. Everyone is already familiar with Vadion and Nyana, who needs no introduction anywhere they go on the planet. However, many of the citizens of Oneda have wondered how long it will be before they will take advantage of one of their planet’s greatest rewards for achievement. With all the advancements the planet Oneda has seen in its extensive history, the one thing that has changed very little is the pleasure of sex. It is a form of expression and passion that the scientist and scholars feel no need to change. Despite the many enhancements in hyperbionics they have made in their evolution as a species, sexual relationships on the planet Oneda are most usually monogamous and most begin with marriage. A marriage that lasts throughout the very long life spans of both spouses. Domestic disagreements are rare and often very minor. Such is the nature of a planet that has never had a military conflict within its world. Such is the nature of highly intelligent beings. Sex without approval to procreate cannot produce offspring. It is often enjoyed between couples. Sex is still the means of reproduction when approved.

Reproduction is particularly taxing on the females. Given to them is a drug that diminishes their molecular density to soften the areas of their bodies that will need to expand for the child to grow. When that happens, the heat from their blood begins to overwork the coolants of the skin and veins. This can potentially cause permanent damage to the vascular system. It is not a painful process, as the drug also contains ingredients that make the nerves less sensitive. As the science of the planet is its most outstanding attribute, the reproduction drug also contains ingredients that improve different features of the developing fetus. A form of control to ensure evolution. Each newborn at their prime is an improvement from their parents. It mostly benefits males on physical strength because of the size of their bodies. Female scientists and every other female on the planet prefer it that way. They have no desire to look like males or
