About this ebook

When I was a child, many speakers came through our home. Preachers and missionaries alike had wonderful tales to tell. Many times after the evening service, we sat around the dining room table, eating finger food and listening to the guest speaker tell more narratives. About half of the stories in this book are my version of the accounts they told. As a young boy, I was spellbound by the facts of history and the tales that illustrate the facts of history. As I grew older, I began to realize that the legends of history are dull and worthless without its main character--God. Him! It's His story! The rest of the book is based on the life of real people I call Amos, Rachel, and Victor. Still, the main character is God. I changed the names, places, and dates just to protect the guilty--the ones guilty of thinking they are the most important part of the story. We all do it. We call our lives our story, but if we will place our hand in His hand, our history becomes His story. I hope this book encourages you to make your story His story.

    In the Morning

The horses were feeling their way along as the men rode them down into the valley. The darkness was thick, and all the men could hear was the shuffling of the hooves along the dirt path. They had ridden all day and planned to ride all night because their errand was urgent.

Suddenly a voice called out of the darkness. Halt. Get down off your horses.

Bewildered, the men peered into the darkness. They could see nothing. So stiff from long miles of riding, they clambered down.

The voice spoke again. Pick up rocks around you, and fill your pockets.

The men could not imagine why he asked them to pick up rocks, but they all began to gather rocks. Some picked up more, and some picked up few, but they all put rocks in their pockets.

Get back on your horses, and ride on, the voice said.

They all climbed back onto their horses and began to ride again. Up over the lip of the valley they went.

Then the voice called to them one more time. In the morning, you’ll be both glad and sorry.

Through the night they rode, all the while wondering, What did he mean by In the morning, you’ll be both glad and sorry?

In a great blaze of red, the sun began rising over the eastern horizon. They stopped to drink from their canteens and reached into their pockets to toss away the rocks. But they weren’t rocks at all. They were diamonds! And yes, they were both glad and sorry. For they were glad they had picked up as many rocks as they had, but they were sorry they had not picked up more.

As we travel through this life, there are things we feel very urgent about and others that seem unimportant, like the rocks we are walking on.

There are those we feel will waste our time and we will be better off without them. They are just something to walk on.

There is a voice calling you and me. Get down off your high horse. Gather up the rocks, the worthless, the discarded, and the useless around you. Bring them with you. In the morning, you’ll be both glad and sorry.

I believe in that great morning when the Son shall arise, shining in all His glory. We will look at those we thought were worthless and see that, in His light, they are priceless.
