About this ebook

“Saul awoke in an unfamiliar country. He could not see. For three days he was in total darkness, anguishing over what happened. His thoughts turned to all the people he had beaten and thrown into prison. He was trying to destroy their church, and it was the church of God. How could he have made such a terrible mistake?”

The Apostle Paul: His Story describes how this man had a change of heart and became the Savior’s greatest missionary.

Paul was thrilled to learn that the promised Messiah, had really come to earth. He was anxious to teach others the wonderful story of Jesus. “Except—now some were determined to kill him.”

We need genuine heroes. This is the Paul we should all know.

    Who Was Saul?

As a child, Saul loved to hear stories of the mighty men of God. He could picture himself in these stories. Certainly, he was as brave and strong as any of them—even Goliath. Like David, he would walk bravely toward the Philistine army to fight the nine-foot tall giant, Goliath, and kill him with a sling and a stone. He would free the children of Israel as Moses did, and when Pharaoh’s armies followed, he would divide the Red Sea and lead them to safety. Like Daniel, he would refuse to worship the golden image. He followed the Lord and wasn’t afraid of a den of lions, for with God, he was all powerful. He was excited to become a man and teach these stories to all around him. Happiest in the beautiful synagogue than any other place, Saul knew someday he would become a rabbi.

There was little time to dream of these things. When he wasn’t doing chores or studying in school, he was busy helping his dad making tents. He loved the excitement of the marketplace with tables loaded with goods from all over the world. The sellers were people of many nations speaking strange languages. He longed to see the world and to know the people. He worked hard in school learning about civilizations, and he mastered the Greek language of his teachers. He was bilingual, spoke Hebrew at home and Greek in the marketplace. His family called him Saul (Hebrew), and those who spoke Greek called him Paul.

When he was about fourteen, Saul was ready to pursue his vocation. He packed his bag with all he needed, said goodbye to his family, and accompanied by friends, traveled by ship on the Great Sea (today’s Mediterranean Sea). They sailed to the far away land of Judea. From the sea, it was a two-or three-day walk to Jerusalem. At night, he wrapped himself in his blanket to sleep on the
