Acknowledgments
In every writing endeavor, there are people who assist in the project. It is here that I would like to recognize those individuals. First, I want to thank Kresta Brown, who, over a period of months, shared multiple stories of the antics of her teacup Yorkie. Her stories gave birth to this book. It is the energy and personality of her dog, Little Man, that I have endeavored to capture in this adventure.
Next, I want to thank Helen Gocher for her amazing contributions and keen perception that opened my eyes to see things differently. Also, the enthusiasm and contributions of Jubilee Moore and Kaylee Webster helped shape this work. Their enthusiasm was greatly appreciated during the writing process. Heather Moore and Paige Webster also contributed ideas that are reflected in this story. I want to thank the firefighters in Roanoke, Virginia for their willingness to share details about their profession. Any errors or misrepresentations in this book are mine alone. And last but certainly not least, I thank my husband for his foresight and encouragement during these past several months.
Chapter 1
FOREVER HOME?
Hi. I’m Little Man. I know what you might be thinking—thirty-two-year-old short guy, or maybe eight-year-old boy with a briefcase. But that would be incorrect. I am a dog, what humans classify as a Canis lupus familiaris. To be precise, I am a five and one-fourth-inch purebred teacup Yorkshire Terrier. My home right now is Muzzle’s Pet Shop on First Street in Somerstowne, but I am destined to do great things—I just know it. You have not heard of me yet, but that will change when I get discovered. I feel eager anticipation, like a runner at the starting block, a race horse at the starting gate, a NASCAR rookie waiting for the flag, or…an Alaskan sled dog with his team, awaiting the start of the Iditarod!
Don’t get me wrong. Mrs. Muzzle, the owner of this pet shop, is very kind to me. She is kind to all the animals in the pet store. But she shows special favor to me. She places me in her lap and reads to me whenever she wants some quiet time. She shows me pictures in the books or magazines she is reading. Sometimes she takes me home at night, and we watch television together. She likes teaching me new things. After all, my world right now is confined to this pet store. Sometimes I get the feeling she does not want anyone to purchase me. She is very energetic and lively and has white curly, short hair. Here she comes now, wearing her favorite green cardigan sweater. She always arrives at seven o’clock every morning.
JINGLE-JANGLE, JINGLE-JANGLE. The chimes over the pet store door ring out as Mrs. Muzzle turns the key and swings open the front door. She flips on the store lights.
Good morning, my pets! Rise and shine! It’s going to be a wonderful day.
Her melodic voice streams through the air like warm rays of sunlight. There is a slight hint of her Scottish accent in the way she pronounces certain words. She once told me that she was born in Scotland, but moved to the states with her parents when she was about five years old. She walks quickly through the aisles and turns on a few more lights. She leans over the display casing and pets a few of the big white rabbits.
How are my wiggly-nose bunnies this morning? Did you sleep well?
One of the kittens meows a morning greeting. She turns toward their habitat to look at them.
And how are my sweet kitties? Did you all cuddle together last night?
She reaches into their display case to stroke their fur and talks softly to each one; there is a shiny, sleek black kitten, a calico kitten, and three yellow tiger kittens.
I must admit, they are adorable. I can’t think of anything cuter than cuddly kittens, can you?
The blue, yellow, and green budgies call out from the back of the store.
I hear you singing, my fine-feathered friends. Good Morning to you too,
she coos.
It’s funny how she behaves as if she hasn’t seen us in days, but we all look forward to her cheerful morning greetings.
Here she comes! Finally, it is MY turn.
And how is my energetic pup this morning? Did you keep everyone awake last night performing, or did you rest quietly?
Pushing herself up onto her toes, Mrs. Muzzle reaches into my display case and picks me up. Her hands are warm and gentle. She nuzzles behind my ears with her nose and gently strokes the fur on my neck with her pudgy fingers. I breathe in deeply to enjoy her familiar scent.
Lily of the Valley—that’s what she called it one day when a customer complimented her and asked what perfume she was wearing. I remember the day
