    Introduction

    Glass of Water

The British comedian Spike Milligan once spoke of a time when he was desperately ill in bed with a severe mental breakdown. Feeling alone and crying inconsolably, he noticed his young daughter walking slowly towards his bed with her arms outstretched. In her hands was a glass of water. She wanted to give her father something to make him feel better, to take away the pain and make things all right again.

When I first read this story, I felt incredibly moved and at the same time profoundly uplifted. For Milligan’s daughter, the glass of water meant so much more than just an offering of a drink: too young to understand what her father was going through and how she could help ease the pain, she offered a simple glass of water as a symbol of her unconditional love.

In many ways this book is my glass of water to you; my way of reaching out my arms and offering you unconditional love and connection through every word, line and page. I hope it helps to reawaken your imagination, allowing you to discover new ways of seeing reality and, in doing so, open your eyes to the true version of yourself.

    Reading Guide

I want you to see this book as the spark that fires your imagination, lighting up the parts of your mind that will help illuminate a new way of thinking, and a new way of seeing the world through the apparatus of your infinite and extraordinary imagination. We really do have everything we need inside our own mind; all we need to do is understand how to access and harness their energy.

Before we dive in further, I just want to give you a few top tips to help you get the most out of all the visualisations and practices discussed:

•Firstly, don’t worry if you haven’t done any meditations, breathing exercises or visualisation techniques before. This book has been written to help guide you through your individual journey at your own pace and in your own time.

•Like many new practices and routines, visualisation works best when practised on a regular and consistent basis. Just setting aside ten to twenty minutes every day is perfect to help you really get the most from your visualisation practice.

•Each visualisation exercise is nuanced in terms of the preparation required, the breathing technique, or the other techniques used. To get the most out of each one, just take a few moments to familiarise yourself before attempting it.

•As with any practice, the more you repeat a visualisation, the better you will become at really connecting on a deeper level, visually, emotionally and vibrationally. The real magic of visualisation happens when you fully believe and embody it as if you were experiencing the vision as an actual event – which, as far as your subconscious mind is concerned, you are.

•Don’t put pressure on yourself to see instant results, as this will create a negative vibrational frequency that will literally block out all the positive energy you are trying to generate. If you remain relaxed and open to enjoying the process, you will see a greater transformation.

•Many of the benefits of regular visualisation are often felt afterwards rather than at the time, so be sure to stay alert and present so that you can notice these changes in your life.

•I want this book to help you start a conversation with your own imagination and inner vision, so feel free to create your own visualisation practices too, or simply adapt and personalise the ones in this book.

•You can write notes on any of the pages, or utilise the space at the back of the book to write down any thoughts, observations or ideas that arise when you visualise.

•Make sure you embrace your visualisations with an open mind, allowing yourself to cultivate an emotional and physical connection with them. This will help you to really believe in the process and the benefits, mentally, emotionally and physically.

•Try to make your visualisation practice part of your daily routine, either in the morning or in the evening, helping you to deepen your practice and feel its true benefits.

•Have fun and enjoy this special time spent tuning into your imagination and discovering your inner brilliance.

I am here, beneath the veil of days in the deluge of time

An imagination calling to the wild within, echoing into the stillness, let me in

For when we visualise, we become limitless,

We are the authors of our thoughts, the architects of our imagination

The gravity that holds infinity inside

    reflecting out with moonlit intention

This inner seeing is truth’s invention

    (Christian Wilson)

    Clear Vision

For most of us, when we think of reality and what we see, we naturally imagine that our reality is the same as everyone else’s. However, the truth is, we all see in a multitude of ways – not just with our eyes or through our other senses, but also with our imagination, using the power of visualisation. Through our imagination, we can visualise our thoughts into life, our memory, our dreams, our emotions and our aspirations. We express this unique inner vision in so many ways, from the power of the written word in stories, poetry and songs, to the power of myths and fables, to analogies, anecdotes and aphorisms. A single word can serve as a mantra or affirmation, unlocking its powerful meaning through focused visualisation. Art is a deep expression of our inner vision too, often working beyond the limitations and shackles of the written or spoken word, allowing our deep imagination the freedom to breathe in new light and capture the imaginations of others. Even when we sleep and our eyes are closed, we are still able to see with such richness and complexity through the power of dreaming, often fooling ourselves into believing that we are experiencing the dream’s events in real time. We also use our imagination to help us make decisions through seeing and rehearsing all possible outcomes for each conscious decision we make. So automatic is this process that we hardly notice ourselves doing it, and yet, without our ability to visualise our thoughts, it would become increasingly difficult to plan and to make decisions. Think of any future event and the chances are that you can use your imagination to form an image in your mind’s eye and run through various scenarios before the event takes place. We are in a sense visualising our future self to actualise our reality.

When you think about it, your eyes are really just a tool to harness your visual capabilities, rather than your one true source of vision. We have greater visual capacity than we realise, and so much more power to shape our lives than we give ourselves credit for. The truth is that our imagination is literally limitless, restrained only by how much we wish to set it free and explore. Unlike the limitations of the physical world, our imagination can help us to visualise endless possibilities – to become anything we choose to be, to do anything we choose to do – defying the laws of physics, time and space as we travel wherever we want to in a heartbeat.

Sadly, from an early age many of us are told that our imagination is just the simple thoughts of a child and not something that will help us as we become an adult and take on the pressures of our modern world. This abandoning of our imagination is why we can feel burdened as we get older: it’s not just because life gets more complicated and serious; it’s also because we have forgotten how to use our imagination to stay in touch with our essence, intuition and true self, to create a world that’s shaped from the heart through compassion and love rather than a set of controlling systems that would have us close our eyes and switch off our inner vision for good.

In my book Calibrate, I take a deep dive into how, from an early age, we are all programmed like software to fit into a social order, and how this early programming keeps us from unlocking our true potential and living our lives beyond perceived limitations. We are each in a sense running on a set of default programs that have been installed into our brain from the moment we were born, making us fit into a set structure rather than allowing us to explore our imagination freely. Through the power of visualisation and calibration techniques, though, we are able to understand how this early programming works and recalibrate our mindset to unlock our full potential and live a life without limits. (See the ‘Recalibrate’ chapter of this book.)

In this book, we are going to venture deeper into the immense power of the imagination, and look at how visualisation can help us to see the world from a fresh perspective, unlocking new ways of thinking about life and the many challenges we face. We will examine how our life is shaped by our perception of the world, and how this perception is in turn shaped by our imagination.

Never has there been a greater necessity to take back control. As we become increasingly distracted and sedated by social media and the news transmitted through increasingly addictive technology, our imaginations are being captured and harvested as we fall further and further under the hypnotic spell of big tech. Our imagination must remain awake and healthy, as it drives independent thought and allows us to see things from a different perspective. Creative visualisation helps us to see alternative viewpoints, share new ideas, create new possibilities, foster innovation, and live life to our fullest potential.

In Visualise you will learn how to reawaken your imagination and shine a light on the many areas of your life that you may sometimes find challenging or simply too hard to get your head around. Together we will look at how visualisation can be used to find harmony and joy, improve your health, and see things from a totally new perspective.

I really hope that you enjoy reading this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. It’s a real mix of different types of visualisation technique, from guided visualisations to creative ones; to the power of the written word including stories, poetry, affirmations and analogies. This book has been written to reawaken your imagination and allow you to explore new ways of seeing, thinking and, well, visualising. Some chapters are short and some are a little longer, making it easy to read and explore the book according to the time you have available. In essence, I want to share with you all the things I have learned over the years that have helped me during all the challenging stuff life has chucked at me – in essence, how I learned to master and embrace the roller coaster that is life itself. This is a book written to set your imagination free; to unlock your mind’s true potential for growth and exploration so that you can see the world a little differently and, in doing so, find more meaning, more abundance and a deeper love for life, and reawaken your inner magic.
