Introduction
I am from the Democratic Republic of Congo. And, my people taught Africans one of its most financially destructive behavior, the practice of sapology. Sapologists worship being dressed to kill, preferably in luxury garments from the West. And they defend the extravagance of their wardrobe at any cost. In fact, some of the filthiest slums of Kinshasa boasted the fiercest sapologists of the capital when I was a child.
Considering the greater financial fragility of the African Diaspora compared to other diasporas in the West, it’s time to question this behavior. Sapology is a destroyer of African wealth. It’s time to compete in the management of our finances and forsake wardrobes that exceed our means. Let’s stop fighting for distinction in the accumulation of depreciating assets. It's time to understand that financial sapology is the killer look all Africans should fight for.
Financial Sapology is the manual of the African Diaspora seeking to earn and gather resources for the benefit of Africa. Financial Sapology concerns Africans willing to re-invest all the forms of wealth that they accumulate in their communities. The perspective of Africans who identify with Africa and maintain their ties with it is our focus. I will primarily address Africans in Europe or America. And, if the distribution of African populations in the Diaspora changes, the vision to raise a worldwide army of financially astute Africans stands.
There are many forms of wealth, but financial wealth will be our focus. If you are an African who wants to change the balance of economic power to resist or stop the economic marginalization of Africans worldwide, this book is for you. We will address a gaping wound in the African Diaspora, financial ignorance. If we don’t address our need to master the fundamentals of personal finance, financial liberty and economic sovereignty will remain out of reach for Africans.
If you are an African in the Diaspora who loves Africa and wants to return home to have an impact, mastering how to keep your finances in order is critical. Defining what going back to Africa means will vary for each of us. We can return home virtually or physically, as well as periodically or permanently. We will also need to decide how much to invest in terms of our time, money and effort.
I want to help Africans who return to build Africa, not Africans who return to plunder Africa. Building our home will never be the responsibility of others. In fact, building Africa's economic strength will always be the responsibility of its people!
