Martin Takener was sitting in the pilot's seat of NOVA GALACTICA. He was still under the impression of the news Losig had just given him. The Qalaak have begun the genocide of the last Nugrou, Takener thought. Maybe by the time we reach Yope, it will be too late.

On the holo-projection in the center of the control center, other ships of the so-called Fleet of 31 were visible. Losig's YOPE and Joseph's WHEELAN particularly caught Takener's eye. Farthest away was the BONDAVA under Commander Charlie Pandajana. In the background shone the sun of the sunken planet Nutshell.

The entire system is about to collapse now, reported Lieutenant Tino Arrazolan, the chief of tracking. We have to get out of here fast, otherwise we'll have problems of the very first order!

We're not going to let it get to that, Takener said, connecting with Funk-Z.

Lieutenant Sirrom here, the NOVA GALACTICA's first radio officer reported.

Unlock a phase that connects me to all units.

Phase is unlocked. You can speak.

Takener's face looked tense. This is Takener to everyone. We will leave the system immediately and make a space jump of three light years. The rendezvous point is in open space. The coordinates will be transmitted. After that, we'll decide how to proceed.

Takener received a simple acknowledgement signal from all 30 ships.

Only Losig spoke from his YOPE.

I am in favor of our flying to Yope immediately, said the Nugrou. Perhaps we will succeed in preventing the worst!

Of course, Takener agreed. But I want to have made contact with Terra Nuova first. We may be able to get assistance.

Time is of the essence, Martin.

Nevertheless, we should act thoughtfully. No one benefits if we transist blindly to our doom.

    Takener broke the connection.

All clear for transition, Hen Coolidge declared. The first officer of NOVA GALACTICA looked intently at the displays on his console.

Have the coordinates of the target point been transmitted? inquired Takener to Glenn Sirrom in radio-Z.

Data transmitted, confirmed the first radio operator.

Then let's get going, Takener muttered.

He was connected to the ship via mind control.

    The NOVA GALACTICA accelerated.

A short time later, the spaceship entered hyperspace. Without any measurable loss of time, it re-entered the normal universe at the previously determined location.

Target coordinates reached, the AI master reported to him.

The other ships of the 31 fleet followed.

With a slight delay of mostly hardly more than a few seconds, all units appeared on the holo-projection. Within this time, the sinking feeling in the stomach area, which Takener was all too familiar with as a result of a transition jump, also disappeared.

He turned again to Glenn Sirrom in the Funk-Z.

Get me an overhead radio link to Terra Nuova, he demanded.

    Right away.

A moment later, the connection was established. Admiral Uriens' face appeared on a secondary screen.

A strained smile played around the lips of the New Roman commander.

I'm glad to hear from you, Takener, he said.

The pleasure is all mine, Takener returned. He gave a succinct account of the events that had led to the sinking of Nutshell, and then came to talk about the situation on Yope. We have to expect that there are strong Qalaak formations in the Yope system. It would be good to have support to keep the last Nugrou from sinking.

You know how much we New Romans of Terra Nuova revere the Nugrou. After all, we owe them much. But at the moment, I'm afraid, a detachment of fleet units is not possible.

Not at least a few combat-ready units? After all, production of the new Orbis spacecraft is in full swing.

That's true, confirmed the New Roman admiral, who looked like a living anachronism in his snow-white toga. The situation simply does not permit it. Let me explain in more detail. Our fleet has been engaged in defensive battles with numerically far superior Qalaak formations. I am not overly concerned. After all, Terra Nuova is effectively protected from the invaders by the Sadrag matter cloud. But at present, on the other hand, we cannot possibly leave this cloud without being immediately attacked. And the Qalaak are stubborn fighters ... But who am I telling, Takener.

    Takener took a deep breath.

He exchanged a quick glance with Don Ryder and Hen Coolidge.

Slimane, the Roman liaison officer aboard NOVA GALACTICA was also present at headquarters.

The New Roman now joined in the conversation.

He, too, wore a snow-white toga with a communicator attached to its clasp. In his hand he held a data module for his personal records. All this had always seemed to Takener like a mixture of different ages. And in a way it was, since the descendants of the 48th Legion of the Roman Empire, abducted by Nugrou to Terra Nuova, had preserved in their culture many elements of antiquity that had long been lost on Earth.

Liaison Officer Slimane here, said the Roman. I ask you to consider the grave situation the Nugrou must be in on Yope. Our forces are totally inadequate for intervention.

I'm sorry. But we're not doing any better than your fleet right now. Consider the extent of the Sadrag cloud! It has an average diameter of over 370 light years! The space battle that is going on here is gigantic even by our standards. We need every unit at this time to fight off and repel the Qalaak. As soon as it is possible to spare units, we will send help to you.

    Takener nodded dejectedly.

There's probably nothing that can be done about that situation right now, he admitted.

I'm sorry, Admiral Uriens emphasized once again. The commander of the New Roman fleet now addressed the commander again specifically. Takener, you know what it would mean if Terra Nuova actually got into serious trouble. Sadrag is the last bastion in the Nyroo galaxy that the Qalaak could not take.

    Yes, I know, Takener said.

They said goodbye. The connection was interrupted.

So what now? asked Don Ryder, addressing Takener.

    Takener shrugged his shoulders.

The Terran rose from the pilot's seat.

I think we can't possibly stand idly by while the Nugrou are slaughtered by the Qalaak, he said.

So we're flying to Yope, Don Ryder concluded.

Takener nodded. Yes, but not blindly. We'll approach cautiously and get the lay of the land.

Agreed, Ryder said. Especially in light of the fact that Losig may have interests of his own.

You mean his information is wrong?

What I mean by that is that it wouldn't be the first time that he hasn't played entirely with his cards on the table and not only acted on his own authority, but also tried to manipulate our decisions in a direction that benefits him and his cause.

Takener knew that his old friend and companion Ryder was telling the truth. While Takener was far from distrusting Losig, healthy skepticism was certainly warranted with regard to the Nugrou rebel. The past had shown that more than clearly.

    Takener called the radio Z.

    Sirrom reported.

Make contact with the other ships. I need a conference call of all commanders.

All right, sir! It's as good as done.

    ––––––––

    2

They quickly agreed on how to proceed. Losig in particular welcomed the fact that the path of the 31 fleet should lead to the home planet of the Nugrou.

He could hardly wait to finally return to Yope.

In several transitions, the 31 fleet approached the Yope system. Finally, it transited to a space sector only a few light years away from Yope.

All units had full stealth protection activated.

The scanners of NOVA GALACTICA and the other ships belonging to the association were working at full speed.

Tino Arrazolan reported. There is strong energetic activity around Yope. Also, we were able to gauge transitions of starships. I'd say there's a fierce battle going on that must involve at least a hundred units.

Slimane raised his eyebrows. Who's fighting who? he asked.

In any case, it could not have been New Roman units - that much was certain.

    We're getting closer, Takener determined.

He now took over the position of pilot Hen Coolidge, who had held it on the previous flight. With star power activated, the starships of the 31 fleet approached. The hyperspace field of NOVA GALACTICA was switched on.

The location sensors provided newer data second by second. Arrazolan activated a projection that illustrated the findings. The positions of the individual spaceships could be seen.

Two fleets of Orbis starships seem to be facing each other there, Arrazolan explained. A group of fifty starships is fighting a fleet of about a hundred and fifty units.

Don Ryder looked thoughtfully at the projection.

The smaller group seems to want to defend the planet against the larger one, he noted.

They hardly stand a chance, Slimane interjected. The superiority is too great.

The battle seemed to be fought with extreme doggedness. Shake-4 and spica beams were used, as was the Defender. The holo-projection display zoomed in on the action. A bright spot of light flashed. It had hit one of the Defender ships. It had exploded after intense fire. A glance at the displays revealed that debris was being hurled through space.

Who is fighting whom?" wondered Martin Takener.

In any case, both groups had Orbis spacecraft.

Tino Arrazolan provided another interesting detail a little later.

Sir, the defender ships are not transmitting the Qalaak's mandatory ID signal, he explained.

    Takener was breathing heavily.

Then they are either fools or ...

Rebels, Don Ryder completed his old friend's sentence.

The superiority of the attackers was overwhelming.

True, the defenders managed to inflict losses on them time and again. But it was only a question of time when the weapons would have to be stretched. It can't last much longer, Takener thought. The advance of the attackers can hardly be stopped.

The AI master, with whom Takener was currently linked via mind control, confirmed the planets commander's tactical analysis,.

All ships were in full operational mode. The defenders fought with the courage of despair. But again and again ships from their ranks were destroyed. Every loss counted double and triple for the vastly outnumbered, of course.

What now? asked Ryder. Do we intervene on the side of the defenders without knowing who they really are?

I want a link to Losig's YOPE, Takener stated, turning to Glenn Sirrom of the Funk-Z.

    Just a moment, Sirrom said.

The moment passed, but the phase was not unlocked.

    What's going on? asked Takener.

The YOPE has opened an open channel and is attempting to make contact with the struggling spacecraft.

    What? escaped Takener.

    Inwardly, he cursed the nugrou.

The camouflage of the fleet was thus invalid. A message in an open channel! Can't you think of anything better, Losig?" the commander thought.

What did I tell you, Martin, Ryder growled. The guy has a tendency to be high-handed!

Gritting his teeth, Takener had to agree with him.

On the other hand, Losig's actions had always had a rationally understandable reason, even if Takener did not approve of the Nugrou rebel's ways. But the long struggle against Qalaak rule had apparently inoculated Losig with a portion of hatred that should not be underestimated. Hatred that simply had to break out now and then.

Beyond that, of course, plain clashes of interests between the Nugrou rebel and the Terrans had come to light from time to time. By and large, these interests were congruent, but there were also differences.

What do you think he's up to? asked Don Ryder, addressing Takener.

    The commander shrugged his shoulders.

Let's just listen to it. After all, Losig is broadcasting over an open-access phase.

    "This is Losig,
