Buildings crumbled under the spica beam bombardment. Completely unhindered, they shot down from the sky and left behind a picture of destruction. No building in New York was designed to withstand such weapons. The city was completely defenseless. Skyscrapers turned into fiery clouds of dust and collapsed.

Martin Takener stared in disbelief at what was on the large main screen in Nova Galactica's headquarters.

    Stop firing immediately, Takener ordered.

Shelling stopped, Hen Coolidge reported. The first officer was as stunned as everyone else currently in the control center.

How is this possible! muttered Orik Daan, stunned.

No more optical contact, noted tracking officer Tino Arrazolan after the horror images disappeared after a few seconds. Only for those brief moments, the dark screen surrounding the Earth had become transparent in a certain area. Now there were again the dark, billowing structures that enveloped the earth for some as yet unknown reason.

Sir, we shelled New York, Tino Arrazolan stated in shock.

But the coordinates ... Takener shook his head in exasperation. He turned to Hen Coolidge. Number One, what went wrong?

The bombardment that was intended to collapse the global umbrella was aimed at the Atlantic, as was the order. No one should have been harmed. The spica beams would have been absorbed by the water if any of it had reached the surface.

But that was New York! admitted Takener.

Even without Arrazolan's additional information, this had been recognizable on the zoomed-in images. Arrazolan now showed the images again on the main screen and zoomed in even more. There can be no doubt that this was indeed Manhattan, the Nova Galactica's tracking officer then stated. There was a dust cloud forming there within the first few seconds of the bombardment that made an accurate view impossible, but if I'm seeing this correctly ... He paused, his voice taking on an occupied tone as he then continued. That could have been the Flatiron Building.

We seem to have hit it off well, Unam Shaka spoke up sarcastically.

    That's completely impossible, Takener muttered.

By conference call, General Jobert Cunningham, commander of the New Terran Fleet, was on from his flagship Proxima. His angular face was visible on a secondary screen. He looked distraught. His facial features had obviously slipped, which was extremely rare for Cunningham, because nothing could really shake this swashbuckler that quickly.

Commander Takener, what's going on with you? the general asked.

Apart from General Cunningham, Auarach and the Geems were also connected to Nova Galactica's headquarters by conference link. The ruler of the Luhr moved the antennae of his dragonfly-like head. The Geem scientists around him seemed to be in an uproar. At least the movements of the antennae and the reptilian upper extremities spoke for that.

Takener registered everything as if in slow motion. He noticed Anna near him. She was as stunned as Orik Daan and Hen Coolidge.

A jolt now went through Martin Takener.

This is Commander Takener. Our optical data shows that we apparently did not decide on an area over the Atlantic, but on a target point in Manhattan. Right now, we're looking for an explanation as to how this could have happened. I ask all units involved to review the data again. Taken out.

Commander, I checked with the astronomical department, Arrazolan reported.

    Takener raised his eyebrows. Well?

Target coordinates were error-free. The astronomical department checked it twice.

Orik Daan looked at his console, shaking his head. I can't detect anything else either.

Commander Takener, do you have any explanation for this? now General Cunningham spoke up. The chief of the space fleet had apparently regained his composure. The Proxima's tracking officer has just analyzed again the optical recordings made when the screen opened briefly. It appears that New York was indeed hit. But the target coordinates were correct. Could it be that there was a malfunction in your target acquisition systems?

We'll look into that, Takener said.

However, our tracking also confirms that your bombardment hit the darkshield at a location under which New York should have been! Or is there any knowledge that perhaps the rotation of Terra has changed under the umbrella?

We'll have to check on that as well, Takener said. I don't think the brief glimpse through the canopy that we were given allows us any basis for calculation on that.

What makes me wonder is that your bombardment should have actually hit the Atlantic at a very different latitude, Cunningham said. So not only would Terra's proper rotation have had to change, but the planet would have been tilted from its axial tilt, which could have been hidden from us by the dark screen.

I find that hard to imagine, Takener said.

They have a famous astronomy department aboard the Nova Galactica. Maybe they can look into that.

    She already does, General.

The connected Auarach now spoke up. The semi-telepathic image impulses of the Luhr ruler were translated into human language by the translator. I can confirm General Cunningham's information in that we, too, have analyzed the optical data on the one hand and, on the other, had the impact position of the spica beams checked again during the bombardment.

Have any new aspects emerged in the process? asked Takener.

Marazanorach should comment on that, Auarach said, as both the head feelers of his dragonfly-like head and one of his reptilian arms pointed in the direction of a Geem. Martin Takener remembered him, even though Luhr were sometimes difficult for humans to distinguish externally. Marazanorach was a young talent among the geems who had already distinguished himself in the study of the transiting sun on the galactic rim.

The period of time during which we had a clear view through the dark screen was very short, the young Geem's semi-telepathic image pulses were translated by the translator system. In this respect, the study of the data obtained in this process is as difficult as it is with the fragmentary recording sequences of the probes with which the Proxima initially tried to explore what is actually going on on Earth at the moment. Nevertheless, we have managed to make a few observations.

I am very anxious, confessed General Cunningham impatiently.

"The first observation concerns the explosion that could be visualized by the sensors when looking through the opening of the dark screen. Although the sequence is short, we have subjected it to a thorough analysis. There is much to suggest that this explosion did indeed occur.
