The trajectory of a Space Viper was approaching Terra from Mars. Two men were aboard, on a mission to Earth on behalf of the NET-OF-REBELLION organization. A mission of vital importance. The small spaceship, suitable for faster-than-light travel, had the shape of a cylinder, was about three meters long, one and a half meters in diameter, and had six thin outriggers. Its mass was equivalent to 4.7 tons. It had room for two people.
Roy Hensley and Pemmo Ramirez were on board. Ramirez acted as pilot.
Hensley enjoyed being able to close his eyes for a few moments while his companion made sure the small spacecraft maintained its course.
Space Viper spacecraft could be flown manually or by mind control, with Pemmo Ramirez preferring the second option because it allowed him to fly the Space Viper without prior, lengthy training.
It's been twenty minutes since we dropped out of hyperspace back into the normal universe,
said Pemmo Ramirez. And AST station space control still doesn't seem to have taken any notice of us.
Roy Hensley smiled thinly.
Camouflage technology seems to be relied upon,
he said.
We'll see how good this technology is once we land on Earth.
The two Terrans belonged to the followers of the extraterrestrial Namlan, who aimed at a re-establishment of the old, Karsan'altorian empire and in the meantime had taken possession of the production world Magol.
The task of the two was to make contact with the NET-OF-REBELLION organization in Nairobi. Not much had remained of this organization on Terra since it had been subjected to a massive manhunt by the Galactic Security Organization GALACTIC SECURITY.
The Space Viper was now diving into the uppermost layers of the terrestrial atmosphere. There was still no sign that the small spacecraft had been noticed. And this despite the fact that the network of tracking stations was getting denser and denser on the way to Earth.
It all seems to be going quite smoothly,
Roy Hensley commented.
What you can leave one at,
Ramirez replied. An ambitious goal we have set, it went through Pemmo Ramirez's mind. The elimination of the Qrroqg shield, designed to protect Terra against alien starships and galactic magnetorcans in an emergency.
Of course, it was by no means Namlan's goal to expose the Earth to the magnetic storms without protection. The deactivation was to take place only for a few days, so that Namlan could occupy Terra with his large space fleet. A precisely planned strike was therefore necessary to disable the protective station from which the screen was projected for a precisely limited period of time.
The blue of the Indian Ocean was visible through the viewing windows of the Space Viper. On a three-D projection, the current position was visible in a schematic representation.
We'll be right there,
Pemmo Ramirez said.
Assuming they don't take us out of the sky after all,
Roy Hensley replied.
Pemmo Ramirez gave a short laugh.
A laugh that was meant to mask his nervousness.
Don't worry. I just hope there's enough left of NET-OF-REBELLION to carry out our mission.
Hensley smiled wanly.
We'll see.

The Space Viper's landing site was just outside of Nairobi.
Hensley activated a transmitter with the help of which he logged into the planetary data network.
He sent a steganographically encrypted message to the NET-OF-REBELLION liaison in Nairobi, giving the current position.
An answer followed a few moments later.
Then everything should go smoothly,
Ramirez said.
The two men boarded the Space Viper and activated the Karsan'altor cloaking device by remote control, so that the spaceship not only remained invisible, but also could not be located.
Both men had only light hand luggage with them, in which they hid their weapons and some technical equipment.
Ramirez glanced at his chronometer. Now we have to wait and see,
he said.
About a quarter of an hour later, a hover cab approached from the north. The hover cab landed. Only moments later, the outer bulkhead opened. A man stepped out. His gray hair contrasted sharply with the black color of his skin.
I'm supposed to pick someone up here,
the cab driver said. Could that be you?
Did Bill Coltrane send you?
asked Ramirez.
The black man shrugged. I don't know no Bill Coltrane. Are you getting on or not?
He laughed. I'm not sure another hover cab is coming to these parts anytime soon, though.
Ramirez and Hensley exchanged a quick glance. Hensley nodded slightly. The two followers of Namlan climbed into the hover. The hoverer rose again, traced an arcing trajectory over the barren, steppe-like terrain, and then moved toward Nairobi.
The outskirts of the megalopolis were visible on the horizon.
Hensley and Ramirez took seats in bucket seats designated for passengers. The cab driver handed Hensley a sealed plastic envelope.
Here, I'm supposed to hand this to you.
What's in there?
I don't know. Go see for yourself.
Hensley opened the envelope. The contents consisted of a set of fake ID cards and their corresponding code numbers. Hensley pocketed one of the cards and passed the other to Ramirez.
Ramirez smiled.
Our people here on Earth do seem to be a lot more organized than I would have thought,
he said.
Actually, Ramirez had assumed that the pursuit by the GALACTIC SECURITY would have hurt the NET-OF-REBELLION organization much more. A large part of the organization had therefore evaded to the colonies. Thanks to the use of Karsan'altorian camouflage technology, however, the shuttle service of Namlan's followers to Terra functioned smoothly, as Hensley and Ramirez had also been able to determine.
