    Story 1

    Now - the call

    ––––––––

Escape really would be exactly what Aiden wanted. The outside. No hardware or disruptions. Being with the family he knew thought of him often. It would be ideal for relieving the pressure of an annoying course burden.

Obviously he couldn't go. It was absolutely impossible. It was unimaginable. It would be narrow-minded, at best, and appalling, to say the least.

So usually when he came to this election, he got the call from his mother. Six months earlier, his father had suddenly given up. The memorial service had been a bad dream, for obvious reasons, especially since it was just after special times of the year. He was glad he had returned home to visit family when, by a happy accident, he would see him for the last time. Only the occasions, including his sisters, bemoaned him.

Aiden had fought sporadically with his father when he was younger, but it was just the power push of any firstborn teenager. They had settled their differences long ago, and Aiden thought fondly of the time his father had enjoyed with him. It wasn't enough, but he was grateful for what he had.

Aiden should have had something else there for his mother, but that was absurd. Not when he felt a desire to keep the family reasonably happy and mostly useful. In addition, his sisters were still at home to stay with his mother. It was her last year of high school, and Aiden figured he'd be able to visit her more often once they started school. Despite being twins, Tamara and Veronika (or Cap and Vee for their loved ones) were vastly different individuals and would likely attend colleges far apart. So it would be protected if Aiden was around.

That he wasn't there for a large part of the last half year obviously indicated that he hadn't seen or been there for many of his younger siblings. It made Aiden feel better, although he realized it was the right thing to do. They had kept in touch before special times of the year, whether he was far away or not. That was, according to Aiden, before the episode.

It was a positive thing overall, but he missed her. To be honest, Aiden decidedly missed her dearly. That was the whole point.

So when his mother called, Aiden had previously arranged his reasons: No, I can't come home all summer. I'm doing a temporary job here at the school. It means a lot for my future.

There was even a trace of validity in it. Aiden had been expanded into an employment opportunity, doing some important exam partner stuff. It wasn't hard, it paid pretty well, and could look great on a resume. However, it was anything but a particularly important or intriguing open door. In fact, it would probably drag quite a bit. He would put about 50% of the energy into really focusing on rodents. Then he'd probably spend the other half drawing her, trusting that an alumni understudy would ask him to do something much more tedious.

All his reasons vanished when he heard his mother's voice.

    Hello, he said.

Aiden, she said before he could say anything else, I'm calling about your sisters.

1,000,000 situations went through Aiden's mind, not one of them great.

Good God, are you all right? Is it true that they are fine?

They are fine. Nothing happened to them.

Oh... oh great, he said, feeling his heart stop racing. Her tone was still intense.

Definitely they are unsettled and I think you know why.

A different kind of frenzy set in, one that lay in Aiden's own disorder and his most terrifying fears.

    Uh, I'm not sure...

Try not to be ignorant to me, sir. You stayed away from them.

All in all, it's not that easy...

Let me get straight to the point, Aiden. i'm not mad at you I love you and I love your sisters and that will never change, but I am your mother and I know when something is wrong - basic. Tamara and Veronika are excellent on a superficial level, but they go through a lot. They lost their father as much as they did, and now they feel like they lost you too. Veronika asked if I would speak to you and inquire if she made you angry or upset. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Ah... well, no, they didn't do anything...

I don't need to be aware of it. What I really ask of you is your presence.

Shit, Aiden said, unusually careless given the way he was swearing in front of his mother. Good. That means I can return home in the middle of the year.

Her tone softened very quickly, but she wasn't done at that point.

Great, but that's not all. You understand what's coming, don't you?

The development camp trip? Is it true that we are doing that this year?

"Honestly, it's too much for me. Your father and I have been building a lot of camp all this time, even before you three were conceived, and I don't know if I could handle being there without him. Basically not this soon. But your sisters have made it their goal, and they obviously think you should come. I'm also not overly excited about the possibility of them being isolated in the woods without anyone else.

So. I guess I should go, Aiden said, fully aware that he'd collapsed instantly and everything calmed down as he thought about his sisters' stress over him.

Great. I'm glad that's sorted out.

The rest of the call was fairly regular, with Aiden updating Mom on his life and taking care of her day-to-day worries and exercises. It was something Father had done before, and Aiden was happy to do it now. When he hung up, he was practically confident about late spring, despite the problems it posed.

Aiden hadn't exactly been shocked by his mother's call, but her steadfastness had. Usually she quit, practically modestly, so to speak. She had strength, but she had allowed her significant other to lead the pack in many ways. He couldn't imagine when she'd been so firm with him, besides when he'd really gotten out of control.

Aiden thought his mother was right, too, in a way. He had withdrawn from his feelings and desires, and it just hurt his sisters a lot more. You were honest. Worse, he had failed them when they needed him most. He chose to make it dependent on them for that alone. He would really be there.

Perhaps, on the off chance that everything was fine and they would understand, Aiden could explain his no-show to them. Regardless of whether he tells them the whole truth, he can still tell them that it was about his own concerns, not theirs. Tamara and Veronika were both amazing and remarkable young ladies. Aiden realizes they deserve a superior sibling.

    Hello,

Please accept my apologies for being so peaceful lately. It has nothing to do with all of you. Sometimes I don't think I'm the same person I was before dad kicked the bucket, you know?

Anyway, that's no reason. I look forward to seeing you mid-year and am particularly looking forward
