Magic Moon - Shirley Moulton
CHAPTER 1–Magic Moon’s New World:
Farni had been in the mountains on a nice, peaceful walk with his pet, Boundy, when he heard a loud growl near-by, followed by some loud booming noises coming from the sky!
Frightened, he ran down the mountainside, as fast as he could go!
Boundy ran beside him, panting heavily.
He heard the loud booming noises again!
What was that? Was the earth moving?
He glanced behind him.
What was happening?
He tripped over a rock and fell.
He scrambled back up, and then ran even faster down the mountainside!
Near the bottom of the mountain, he spotted a large, fallen tree trunk in a small grove of trees. He vaulted over it, and immediately crouched down behind it.
What was going on?
He thought he’d seen some kind of gigantic, creepy, noisy, alien moon-thing
hanging low in the sky, just above the mountain peak!
It seemed to be...making noises? Loud noises! Scary noises! How could a moon be making noises? Moons did NOT make noise.
He poked his head up over the fallen tree trunk.
It looked like...it had... a face?
What?
Creepy!
Farni ducked his head back behind the fallen tree trunk.
He waited a few minutes.
Then he risked another glance.
Its eyes were closed. It was quiet.
Farni took a deep breath.
Then he got up and ran the rest of the way down the path. He did not stop until he was at the outskirts of the village, behind a cottage.
His heart was pounding.
He leaned against the back of the cottage, as he tried to catch his breath.
Boundy stood panting beside him.
I am never going back up that mountainside, ever again!
he vowed, patting Boundy.
I will find another safe place!
he said with resolve. This mountain is way too dangerous now.
But he couldn’t think of any other place to hide.
CHAPTER 2–Girls’ Camp:
Roni noticed another candy wrapper on the trail path and sighed, as she bent down to pick it up.
Why can’t the girls just put the wrappers in their pockets and throw them in the trash later?
she complained.
Because that would be responsible,
Makani said, clearly
