My Mother was a single parrent for three of us. At the age of 14 she left home in Ohio and went south. She married my farther at the age of 16. Mom was only 19 years older than me, Mom didn't have an easy life, but she always did her best for us. I started this story several years ago and set it aside. I picked up the notes that had been taken back when a group of local authora used to meet at our local library. Then Covid put an end to our meetings.

 

Mom had a quirky sence of humor. So I approched her battle with Alzheimers in a way that I'm Sure would please her.

    Introduction:

    In hindsight, Mom had been struggling with the onset of Alzheimer’s insidious grasp for better than two decades, I had always been close to my mom, and as the years passed, we became good friends as well as business partners.

    I struggled with how to tell this story that wasn’t all dark and hopeless. We all know that there is no current cure, and the disease is progressive. This story begins in 2007 just before Mom entered a nursing facility. Chapter one begins with Mom’s point of view and the confused state of mind that so frustrated her.

    Once Mom was moved to rehab conversation became difficult at times, and I developed an interview technique to access her state of mind on a given visit. It could be that the dementia was a gift from God when she had to reside at the senior care facility. She was able to escape to other times and places. Mom could leave the harsh reality of the nursing home and the indignity of being dependant on the care and good will of strangers.

    Mom had fallen shortly after the New Year of 2007. She fractured several discs in her back, as a result of her tumble. Once she left rehab, she was moved to the Alzheimer’s unit where she was confined to a wheelchair.

    My husband and I played many roles in her strange world. It was common for her to introduce us, not as her daughter and son in-law, but I was often her sister, or her mother. I think my gray hair confused her. Much to my relief she never introduced me as her grandmother. My husband was often given the status of
