This story is dedicated to the down-to-earth, loving, spiritual families of rural Missouri that shaped our childhoods and later years.

We also dedicate this story to the memory of Byron Massey, aka Neal F. Guye.

Das moved quicker than anyone expected he could, gripping Viela's throat and lifting her bodily from the pedestal seat. She tried to scream but choked instead, her eyes bulging, her limbs and red tresses flailing.

Bryn didn't hesitate. It was Das or them. She loosed her poisoned arrow at the large man's unprotected head. Why had it come to this? She did not kill people. She'd made that clear to Eirdan when he'd first pulled her here to his world, to Savas.

Her ancestors had once lived on Savas. That was long ago, before the war that had rendered Savas all but uninhabitable. Most of the survivors of that war had fled the planet in large metallic Sails, including Bryn's great grandparents. They'd found a new home on Avaleor.

Avaleor was where Viela, Vinga, and Bryn should be, where they would be right now if not for Eirdan and his white metal sphere and Bryn's curiosity. Why did she have to be so curious?

It had all started with an inexplicable flash of red....

FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE skies above the misty forest, the shrill cry of a distant bird of prey pierced the early morning calm. Bryn offered a silent prayer to Zaasa the Sky Spirit as she moved slowly and quietly on the hunt. She'd broken her fast on a few snailfruit berries, but she was still hungry, and she wanted to take some food back to Trou. Now she was on the trail of a glider separated from its pack. Glider meat was edible and there would be plenty to share. She'd need help getting it back to the village, but that could be arranged easily enough once the creature was slain.

The soft hum of small wings followed by a touch on her shoulder drew her attention away from the hunt. The yellow-feathered humming owl had watched over her last night and wanted its reward. Hello, Pasca, she whispered, and offered the bird a bit of sweet vine she always carried for this purpose. She'd met and bonded with Pasca when she'd gone on her first solo hunt, years ago.

Pasca had awakened her last night. It had only been a falling star, but it had been a sight to behold, its trail lingering for several long seconds in the cool
