Thomas Crawford, a graduate of Stanford University and George Washington University Law School, was a U.S. Navy Officer, practicing attorney for many years, and is a self-taught artist. He and his wife, Caroline, and their family are long-time residents of San Francisco, California.

Baseball evokes childhood, summer, sandlots, statistics, Casey at the bat

and, of course, The Babe. It is America’s game and, I suppose, baseball means pretty much the same thing whether you are from Georgia, Maryland, Ohio or Texas. However, memories or visions of Major League players (whether seen or imagined at play) are shaped more by age than geography. Fans who grew up in the years 1900 to 1930 likely have vivid visions of Cobb, Ruth, Johnson and Mathewson. Fans growing up in the period 1930 to 1950 likely have their fondest memories of Gehrig, Foxx, Grove and Ott. Young fans of the post-World War II and racial integration years probably recall most vividly Williams,
