Kimber Haig

Kimber Haig always wanted to travel the world, but a lack of finances has kept her living within a 200 mile radius of where she was born. Fortunately, there were always books to take her to faraway and exotic locales. As a single mother, her favorite time of the day is late at night when the kids are finally sleeping and she can slide into a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine, a steamy story, and perhaps a toy that isn’t a rubber ducky.

Bull of the Woods - Kimber Haig

    Chapter 1: Stevie Linn

The lunch crowd is lingering, but slowly breaking up. Truckers, mostly. A group of five leather-clad bikers with three thick-waisted women. A tired looking family that wandered in from and even tireder looking RV. The small diner offers hot, greasy food for travelers who have to stop for fuel for their rides and themselves. It isn’t fancy. The smell of fried onions and meat hang in the hot air, unmoved by the rotating ceiling fans.

I watch Phillip as he works his way into a cheeseburger. He always eats his food with gusto. He has mustard and tomato juice on both cheeks and his chin.

If he’d eat my pussy like that, we wouldn’t be here today. I shake the thought away and nibble at another French fry.

It’s even hotter in here than it is outside, I say just to make conversation. To avoid the topic, I tell myself. Then I tell myself to shut up.

No shit. You’d think they’d turn the fucking air conditioning on in here! Phillip’s voice rises with every word until everyone in the diner is looking at us. I duck my head and make an intense study of the puddle of ketchup on the plate beside my fries. I know the parents of the RV family are giving us a dirty look, and even the bikers seem mildly annoyed.

Be quiet, Phillip, I warn him.

Why? You think those bikers will come over here and kick my ass? Why’d you make us come here, anyway?

Any one of those bikers could break you in half, I tell him. There’s no reason to be nice to him anymore. That includes the women.

He pushes his face out of his burger and glares at me with surprised green eyes. His eyes narrow. What’s wrong with you today?

    I’m leaving, I tell him.

    Leaving? Where to?

I shake my head. I don’t know. I’m just leaving. Leaving town and ... leaving you.

He actually lowers his burger. Not all the way down to the plate, but about halfway between his mouth and the plate. Leaving me? he asks. I nod. He asks, Why?

I’m bored. And things just aren’t working out between us, I explain. We don’t have anything in common.

We both like to fuck, he argues.

It’s true. However, he just isn’t very good at it. He has one set of moves, and they weren’t that interesting the first time.

We’ve been together almost six months, Phillip. We gave it a good shot. But, well, you’re just not what I want out of life, I tell him. I’ll be twenty-five years old next week. That’s a quarter of a century. Think about that. And what have I done? Nothing. I haven’t done anything at all with my life. You know, I haven’t even left the state since I was a senior in high school, and that was with my parents.

I can probably get a couple of days off at the shop, he protests, all the bravado gone from his voice. We could take a long weekend. I’ll take you to Dallas. Or Colorado. Where do you want to go?
