THOUSAND COOKIES LATER; what a wonderful name for a bakery, Gracie thought as she looked into the window. Fresh baked cookies were cooling on a baker's rack, then sprinkled ever so lightly with powdery, dusty goodness. She smacked her lips in anticipation. Since the bakery was a short walk from her house, it was also an everyday visual treat. A cheery bright sign and potted plants with wooden tables where patrons sipped coffee or noshed on dunked sweet treats.
Gracie ran down to her house on Forest Lane; it looked more like Candy Cane Lane. The lamppost was decorated in red and white stripes, and every cookie-cutter home was outfitted with Christmas lights.
While telling her mother about the pretty cookies, she omitted the part about her closing her eyes with a face and tongue pressed against the glass until being shooed away, imagining the soft gingerbread star-shaped cookies in her mouth.
Ms. Blake, their housekeeper/babysitter/co-conspirator, asked if she had licked the window. Mrs. Strand looked horrified.
I hope you did not. That would be a mouthful of germs.
Of course not.
Ms. Blake pointed to the dirt smudges from the glass window. Gracie wiped her face with the back of her hand.
Pretty dessert looked like art to her. Gracie was always amazed at culinary masterpieces. And she wondered why the
