This Book is from my own experience in the floristry trade, as a young florist.

These are actual events that have occurred while I have been in the industry.

This is my personal opinion how I have made floristry designs but not necessarily the way they tell you to make them at college.

The information about floral foam is from the internet from scientific journals and veering florists, links are provided.

    Chapter One

    Being a florist

When you start in a florist shop for the first time, you are completely in their hands, so you trust them.  You have been to college, learning the ropes, but you need real-life experience, which is what life is all about.

When you get out there, sometimes people take advantage of you, and sometimes people don’t. Some people take you under their wing, which is what you need to help you learn and grow. I have put together some incidents from setting weddings up to various things that could happen to you as a florist

You have to make mistakes, that’s how you learn.

As a florist, you have to get up early at peak times. There was one occasion when I came into work I couldn't concentrate, because it was 5.00 am and I had finished at 10.00 am the previous night, so I was walking around like a zombie. Thank God I didn't need to calculate anything, because I wouldn't have got it right. Sometimes as a florist, you could be working 13 hours per day at peak times. I have done 80 hours that week, which was exhausting. I asked to go home one Mothers day, after doing 80hours but the boss said No you need to carry on there was no getting out of it. If you think that is floristry is just selling flowers, you need to think again. It involves making heavy handtied's and other heavy things, like picking up buckets with lots of water in them.

    Being a florist

The first thing I can tell you about being a florist it isn't as easy as people think, the number of times people have said to me I would love to be a florist  I would be a millionaire.

Because people only see what they want to see serving in the flower shop and making handtieds up.

Be a florist isn’t that easy you have got to keep up with making handtied’s.  This involves arranging with your hands all day if you have a lot of orders your hands hurt and if you get expensive handtieds like £50 that is a lot of flowers to hold.

Next, you have to stand up all day your legs and your hands do get used to this but it takes awhile.

When you are buying off wholesalers or Dutchmen you have to think about how much you are going to sell them for so always look for a  good price.  Cheap flowers don't always mean good quality flowers.

When the flowers come you need to condition them, this means is you have to take the leaves off stem up to where the water line is going to be also if you are conditioning Roses take the thorns off.

Cut the flowers at an angle because if the stem is cut straight it wouldn't
