I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

    INTRODUCTION

    FOR QUIZMASTER

This book contains six sets of twelve questions which are great for parties and quiz nights. They are not typical general knowledge questions, which the players either know or don’t know. A little general knowledge is required, but they also involve simple word play so, if a player thinks of a possible answer, he knows if it’s right.

Let’s be clear on why this quiz is designated ‘Shakespeare’. Set 1 considers ‘Shakespeare’ as a word, and sets 2 and 3 require the knowledge of the names of his best-known plays, given at the end here. You may wish to share the list with players by reading it out or giving a printed copy.

Most of the questions are intended to be quite easy. I hope players will score at least 70%. The success will make the quiz more enjoyable for everyone. But most sets contain one or two stingers at the end, giving stronger players a chance to edge ahead.

This quiz can be done orally, but it’s better written. In that case, each set should take about ten minutes – asking the questions and scoring the answers.

This book therefore provides an hour-long quiz but, for a more enjoyable event, give the questions in two sets of three: ask the questions and go over the answers for sets 1-3, then have a break before sets 4-6.

Some sets have spare questions at the end, called Tiebreakers. You can use them for that or include them in the quiz. They tend to be more difficult.

No layout of this book would suit everyone, so I’ve kept it simple, giving each set of questions separately – questions, then tiebreakers (if any) then the answers.

Almost all the questions have one-word answers. You won’t need special answer sheets; just paper and pencils. The players may compete as individuals or in small
