Walter R. Hoge received his masters degree and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Purdue University before practicing small animal veterinary medicine. Currently and for the last forty-¬five years, he has practiced at Camden Pet Hospital. He has been published in several scientific journals and written a book called Easter: McEaster Valley and ¬Thoughts on my Thoughts I. A proud father to -five grown children and 17 grandchildren, he lives in San Jose, California.

    Many years ago, during the early light of day, I was walking in the Sierra foothills with my Labrador retriever, Beau. As the sun began to rise in the east, I noticed a passageway into a valley that shone like gold, much the same as the sun’s reflection appears when it sets at the end of th e day and reflects off the windows to the east. I didn’t think much about it and continued walking eastward on the south side of the valley entrance.

    Approximately twenty minutes later, I again looked toward the valley. The color of gold had changed to the various colors of vegetation, with a beautiful blue cloudless sky marking the horizon. However, the colors were bright and seemed to glow, more like a painting than the familiar California countryside to which I had become accustomed. I also noticed that Beau became more excited as we walked closer and closer to the entrance into the valley. His nose was to the ground, and he circled from side to side in front of me, smelling the ground and pausing from time to time, lifting his head and looking into the direction of the valley.
