Thank you for picking up this book and giving it a chance. Very often, people hear of our trading results and dismiss us outright. They simply do not believe that achieving 100% returns by trading stocks can be done. We understand. In fact, for a while, we chose not to publish our numbers, as they seemed to actually deter potential subscribers.

So, when we were approached to write a book, we hesitated. In many of our internal discussions, we lamented that we would probably be better off if we were just gaining 20% per year. That would be much more believable. And yet, somewhere along the way to a new trading year, the positive returns start snowballing. Dutch and Trader Z proclaim, Here we go. It’s happening again!

This was definitely the case in the first quarter of 2022. As the stock markets struggled, our team was able to find the right sectors, the right stocks, and the right way to play the short side. This time, though, we decided to embrace the results and be fully transparent with the investing public. In the first 90 days of trading in 2022, our portfolio performance rose to 100% and beyond, while all of the major equity indices were down. Not too shabby.

Beyond the performance of our ideas, our founders knew we wanted to offer subscribers something different and exciting. At the outset, we decided to be much more than just another boring financial newsletter. We want our Carnivores to learn how to be great traders and to have FUN while they do it. We keep things light and entertaining, sometimes even kitschy and weird.  But do not be confused, we are dead serious about trading stocks and making money.

In the following pages, we will expose the flaws inherent within Wall Street’s passive investment doctrine. We will explain how the Carnivore Way can help you evolve with the times and trade in a profitable and exciting system. We will offer key practices, principles and philosophies to assist you in making solid trading decisions. You will see how our approach produced outsized returns in 2022 and how you can accomplish similar results.

By the time you finish this book, you will have acquired some valuable tools in your quest to be a great trader. If you devote some time and effort, you will eventually experience an epiphany. The proverbial lightbulb will come on, and you will actually gain a feel for the markets. In many instances, we see our Carnivores become Hall of Fame traders (learn more in Chapter 4), sometimes even outperforming us!

Chapter 1

The Market you Knew is Dead

Something bad is going on. Something is rotten. Yes, the financial markets are in a free fall. Your 401k, your IRA, or your personal investment accounts have been shelled. But there’s more. You likely have an uneasy feeling about the whole investment game, and you cannot seem to put your finger on it. We are here to tell you that your gut is absolutely 100% spot on.

That hopeless feeling of losing control is real. You have done your part, right? You have put away money, dollar-cost-averaged, diversified, planned, and paid your fees. You have sacrificed and done exactly what your financial advisor has recommended. And still, you look at your account statements and see that 30 to 40% of your money is gone. You may feel duped, deceived, confused, or even angry. One thing is quite clear: something isn’t working.

Allow us to help clarify the situation. The issue here is that you (and so many others) have been misled. For the past 30+ years, the Wall Street Establishment has done an amazing job of controlling the narrative of how people should invest. The investor has been brainwashed into believing that they are doomed to the systemic mediocrity of passive investing. The Wall Street elite have successfully convinced the masses that they cannot time the market, cannot trade stocks, and cannot make money in a down market. You have been led to believe that you have no alternative but to trust Financial Advisors because navigating the markets is far too complex for you lay people to manage on your own.

That thing that your gut has sensed is wrong is something that has been done by design. You are not crazy. You’ve been deceived. As a result, your inner voice is telling you: I don’t have time to manage my investments. I’m not good at stocks. I don’t understand investing or finance. Trading stocks is too complex. Sound familiar?

Well, we’re here to tell you that this is all nonsense. You can do it, and you must. Once you realize this and change your way of thinking, you will scoff at the people who stand idly by while their investments are wiped out. You are currently experiencing the wonderful world of passive investing. Sounds a little lazy, right? I’m passive. I’m going to trust someone else to handle my money, while I relax. Of course, it is more complex than that, as we just explained. But the essence is true: in order to succeed, you can no longer be passive. That market you knew is now dead. As you might have gathered by now, the new way, the new paradigm is active.

Ironically, the new way is actually the old way: trading stocks! Trust us, we’ve seen it all. Dutch, Jay and Trader Z were all Wall Street insiders at some point (not too long ago, actually). In fact, we cumulatively spent roughly 100 years in the business. The lies being told today are lies that we told too. The difference between us and many of the others is that we couldn’t take it anymore. We broke away. We took great financial risk to leave the business and tell the truth. We knew there was a better way, an honest way, and that people like you needed to know about it. We had a different vision of the future of investing, which harkens back to the early days of our careers.

Depending upon your age, you may or may not remember how investing was done 30 years ago. Fee-based managed accounts were in their infancy. Clients didn’t have computers or cell phones that gave them real-time stock quotes – they had to check their prices each day in a newspaper! Financial Advisors were called Stock Brokers. The relationship between the Broker and his client was based upon whether the advice given provided solid returns for the client. Imagine that! If the trading ideas of a Broker sucked, the client would part ways and find a broker who knew what he was doing. Yes, the relationship mattered; but in the end, performance was the thing. You lose a guy 30%, and he’s likely out the door!

The important thing to note is that investors were entirely comfortably trading in individual stocks. A passive investor was the guy who bought Coca
