Fascinating Short Stories For Curious Kids - Dally Perry
Introduction
T
here are many stories every typical American child is told while growing up. These stories are held very sacred and close to our hearts as our first truths … But are they really?
We were told that the Philadelphia seamstress, Betsy Ross, designed and embroidered the first American flag at the request of the pioneers. Sometime in 1870, Betsy Ross’ grandson said during a meeting at the Pennsylvania Historical Society, that his grandmother was the one appointed to create a flag for America. This information spread like wildfire as the truth, and Betsy was noted as the one who structured the flag for the new nation.
The truth about the American flag is that Betsy Ross only sewed flags for the Pennsylvania Navy, but there is no record to back up her grandson’s story. It’s baffling, but the truth is no one is sure who really designed the flag for the new nation. The closest truth about the American flag is that its design was inspired from a military banner carried around during the times of the American Revolution.
There is a popular myth about how savage Indians invented scalping as a brutal tactic to terrorize the settlers. But the truth is, scalping was originally an ancient European tradition.
English and Dutch colonists were offered a scalp bounty
to help keep the Indians frightened and distant. Eventually, the Indians approved and picked up the practice for themselves. The settlers seemingly overlooked its background and another lie about Indian cruelty was birthed.
There is a myth behind the midnight walker called Paul Revere, who made a lonely but spectacular midnight ride to inform patriots in Lexington and Concord that the British were approaching them for ill. At first, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow praised Revere’s in his poem – The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. It is possible Longfellow penned the poem from a heart filled with guilt, because his grandfather had one time attempted to arraign Revere during the Revolutionary War. The charge against Revere was that he showed attributes of fear which is belittling of a true soldier. But at the end of the day Revere wasn’t found guilty.
The truth behind this Paul Revere myth is that one of two men who tried the famous ride was William Dawes who made it safe and sound to Concord. Revere didn’t make it there, he was hindered by British troops.
The myth behind Thanksgiving gives me jitters, but nevertheless, the truth must be told about this beautiful celebration. Myth has it that Pilgrims had a Thanksgiving feast of pumpkin pie and turkey after their initial year in the New World and since then, that’s how everyone has followed suit. The truth behind Thanksgiving is that until Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, it never was. Also, the Pilgrims never ate pumpkin pie or turkey. It was all a legend.
The legend behind the Americus – Amerigo Vespucci is another surprising tale many kids will ache to know was just a myth after all. Amerigo Vespucci was a Florentine navigator who traveled to the New World four times from 1497 to 1502. Thus, Amerigo was honored by naming the new world with his name.
Yes, Vespucci wrote an account of his four trips. An Italian mapmaker stumbled on this account and was super impressed by it, so the Italian placed Americus’ name on the first ever map featuring the discovery of the New World. The truth is, America is named after a potential fraud and scholars strongly doubt Vespucci made any of the travels he claimed to have had. Sorry kids, your famed Vespucci wasn’t named after our beloved America.
Kids can be encouraged to grow more curious by questioning and finding media that enhances a show of curiosity. This helps kids to discover reliable sources to build their awareness. The human mind is like a muscle and is strengthened with the aid of continuous exercise. The mental exercise curiosity helps the mind get stronger. You are open to new ideas and learning new things.
We hope that this compilation of interesting stories will further help the kids’ minds become more curious, and even better, broaden life’s horizons.
