    THE BEGINNING - 1927

Gabe noticed a few of his students are keeping an eye on the time, whilst checking his time piece raising an eyebrow, he smiles, releasing a passive sigh knowing it has been a long, full day. It’s quite and apart from a few coughs and a clearing of the throat, Gabe reaches for his Herringbone bone cap placing it on and adjusts it accordingly as he reaches over gathering up what seems like mounds of paperwork from his desk and starts placing them in his briefcase whilst reminding his students about next week’s test. He stands adjusting his blue vest as the bell echo’s a ring like an old steam train pulling into the station, as thoughts of his wife motivates his desire to move swiftly as he watched his students flock to the door like moths to a flame and like himself, they were relieved the class is over. Gabe fastens his briefcase then starts walking over to the door whilst closing the front of his blue blazer, when a voice, calm, and clear calls out to him from the shadows at the back of the room.

    Mr Davis, sir

Gabe stops then turns to the voice sighting a young lad slowly making his way down the stairs as he comes into view from the rear of the room. Gabe noticed his clothing, an old worn vest over a blue shirt with black pants that falls short of his ankles, deep brown shoulder length hair that has not been washed in sometime and his bag draped over his shoulder looking a little old and faded entwined with a length of rope holding it all together. Gabe has questions with raised eyebrows as the lad approaches him giving the assumption he comes from a poor family? Gabe rarely hears from him as he sits quietly up in the back corner amid the shadows and once face to face the lad stumbles and drops his bag, Gabe could see he was nervous whilst bending down hearing the lad apologising, Sorry sir. Gabe smiles whilst helping the young man with his books and then hands them back asking.

Trent... right? That is your name?

Yes sir Gabe extends his hand in friendship wanting to make Trent feel more at ease, noticing the young man adjusting his black rim glasses back on his nose and carefully reaches out and accepts with a thank you. Gabe then places his hand in his pocket warming them up and asks.

What can I do for you?

My assignment Sir, I need more time. Gabe has given all his students the weekend to complete a 500-word essay on Native American History, giving Trent the benefit of a doubt asking?

Are you having some difficultly, Trent?

No Sir, I’m working. Gabe then gives Trent a curious look clarifying what he meant asking, Work did you say - Some sought of, after school job?

No, I need to help out at home.

Okay Trent, just make sure it’s on my desk by Friday! Gabe sighs

Trent’s extremely relieved and he cannot help but smile as he backs up a little and turns around and quickly walks out the door saying, Yes sir, thank you Sir! Disappearing down the corridor when Gabe follows behind happy, he was able to help while looking forward to heading home to his wife, for a very cosy evening with candlelight, wine, and a delicious dinner followed by showing her just how much he loves her as his imagination runs away with him. Mrs Allen caught Gabe walking down the corridor and calls out to him as her eyes meld with his Mediterranean charm through an open door to have a great weekend, waving as he passes her classroom. Gabe keeps walking when he heard Mr. Bells already starting the merry season with the art teacher Susan, noticing with the door wide open catching them in a compromising undignified position as the brandy spiked eggnog is being passed around.

Gabe, come and join us. He laughs.

No Thanks Mr. Bells I’m on my way home to my wife as you should be, you bloody idiot!

Hearing Mr. Bells laughing aloud while groping Susan’s breast showing a side that is less fluttering having found the man annoying throughout the year, having been told in the past to curve his behaviour! He has not, he is supposed to be a role model for students he is not! As the warmth of the brandy takes its effect while shouting out, You’re Loss Buddy. Gabe’s disgusted shaking his head wishing the board would fire him, but there is always next year, and he will try again as he continues walking through the corridors and out through the double doors breathing a sigh of relief.

He looks up at the weather whilst putting on his coat to stay warm and walks out into the car park, where Gabe opens the car door throwing his briefcase on the front seat. He picks up the crank handle and goes to the front of the car and cranks her up noticing the snow starting to fall. The sound of the engine kicks over while Gabe rubs his hands together feeling the cold, he then takes a last look at the university while jumping into the driver’s side tapping on the steering wheel whispering, Let’s go home. As Gabe drives out of the car park and looks to the left noticing Trent walking along the side of the road and just thinks for a minute what a nice quiet lad he is, only, Trent’s smirking whilst noticing Gabe as he drives off and then with stealth speed Trent was gone. Gabe then continues to drive as he thinks about the evening he has planned with Teresa, and in no time at all he arrives at home driving up the driveway when he rubs his eyes and noticed an Indian at his front door, he rubs his eyes again and has a second look as he mutters.

    No! It cannot be.

Again, he has a third look and there is still an Indian at his front door waiting for him, and he cannot believe it. He is exactly what he teaches, a throwing arrow red feathered classic Indian from the late 1860’s, with his red earth complexion and long black hair entwined with feathers of Red as it falls over his shoulders. His Jacket of buckskin were made by hand with incredible stitching and fringe, colour Red with hand painted symbols of his culture, and beside him stands a tall man with a solid build wearing faded jeans a tan leather jacket, and a wide brown bream hat. Gabe was in shock as he slowly exits the car then makes his way up to where they stood, straight away Gabe noticed the tall one having all the charisma and flare of a musketeer, his speechless, flabbergasted, and for the first time he was lost for words. When the Indian held out his hand along with a smile, ready to greet him as he introduced himself announcing,

Hello, I’m Redhorn and this is Toad.

Gabe could not stop shaking his hand he was so excited and kept apologising for staring, but he did notice how cold he was to the touch when he released his hand replying.

I’m Gabe, I’m so sorry for staring Redhorn, but I’ve never quiet seen an Indian like you before. Gabe cannot stop smiling as he invites them in once he has managed to find the key to open the door, as he babbles on explaining, My wife is out but she should be home soon, would you both care for a drink, coffee, tea...whiskey As Gabe Walks down the hallway placing his briefcase on the side table, Redhorn and Toad follow as they both look around whilst Gabe keeps looking over his shoulder as he walks towards the kitchen believing they will disappear. Toad speaks out as Gabe can hear a Scottish accent replying, No thank you, lad. Gabe invites them to sit down while he fixes himself a cup of tea, Redhorn and Toad are a little bit apprehensive, as they make their way over to the table and sit very quietly whilst showing a smile. Gabe then sits opposite them while waiting for the kettle to boil, he does not know what to say as the silence becomes uncomfortable, and he knows he should show signs of being a gracious host asking.

So, what can I do for you boys, did you come a long way? The kettle then blows its whistle as Gabe nervously jumps to his feet taking it off the flame, again asking.

Are you sure you boys don’t want anything?

Gabe continues making his cup of tea then placing the little spoon down on the counter whilst looking over at the boys, seeing they wish for nothing and joins them at the table placing his cupper down on the table when Redhorn breaks his silence and asks.

I need your help. Gabe’s taken back and is amazed as to why someone would require his help? That is strange Gabe thought, raising an eyebrow considering they only just met - or do not know him whilst looking at them both and replied, How can I help you? As his curiosity builds taking a sip of his tea and curiously looks over at Redhorn’s appearance thinking to himself, believing how close he resembles an 1860 warrior when Gabe then snaps back to reality hearing Redhorn explain their predicament saying, I’m a Vampire, and so is Toad. Redhorn’s wearing a smile so as not to frightened Gabe, but it did not matter because he was laughing so much believing this was nothing more than a joke! When Toad leans in close to Redhorn, while keeping an eye on Gabe and was so perplex by his reaction whispering.

Why is the lad laughing, did he not hear us. Toad wonders why he is not scared or running to the front door having always had the opposite reaction of terrifying screams, then hysteria, followed by a plea for their life. But nothing, causing major concern for Redhorn and Toad as they look to one another baffled by Gabe’s onslaught of humour when Redhorn quietly replies, I don’t know it could be a delayed reaction? They both wait until Gabe stops laughing, and then Teresa walks in wondering what was so funny as she smiles at her guests asking.

Honey, what’s so funny and who do we have here? Teresa’s standing in kitchen with her hands full of groceries miscalculating the bench, dropping her packages! Only to be saved by Redhorn with swift speed catching the packages then placing them on counter safe and sound, Redhorn was back in his seat before Teresa knew what ever happened. Gabe’s not laughing anymore; he stands and gingerly walks over to Teresa as they both look at each other in total shock when Teresa steps forward and had to ask, What just happened? And how did you do that so quickly? Her hearts pounding as her anxiety is rising; Redhorn senses a second heartbeat a baby’s heartbeat as does Toad whispering.

Redhorn she is carrying a wee baby! We have to calm her down, maybe we should enthral her. Not wanting to hurt Teresa, Toad swiftly stands by her side taking Teresa hands as she gazes into his bright, yellow eyes. And with his deep husky voice enthraller’s her to a calm place as he then sits her down while they deal with Gabe who is in shock while trying to explain.

Gabe it’s Okay, where not here to hurt you. Redhorn calmly informs.

What did you do to Teresa? Gabe gulps.

We have just placed her in a calming state, so she does not have an anxiety attack - now Gabe. It is important you listen okay, again, where not here to hurt you, we just need your help, its important! Gabe does not say anything and sits back down drinking his tea as he checks on Teresa, while Redhorn and Toad sit patiently waiting for Gabe to take it all in. Sliding his chair back and takes a few steps over to the counter and pours himself another cup of tea - with a shot of whisky! He then goes back and sits himself down, where he sat for two hours before he looked up at Redhorn and Toad and states, Okay you’re not here to hurt me or my wife I can see this, but how did you know you can trust us with such information - you don’t know me. Gabe then looks at his wife as he holds her hand, Redhorn and Toad reassure him she is fine, and their baby is okay asking, Gabe, we have...... But Redhorn was cut off abruptly as Gabe had to ask Redhorn what he meant by, baby, Gabe was confused while looking at his wife seeing a blank expression wash over her face as Redhorn continued, We didn’t mean to upset your wife; we heard the second heartbeat and we realised she was pregnant. Toad then congratulated Gabe as he smiles while Gabe looks at them both and said in a calm voice, I didn’t know. Toad then faces Redhorn with a sad face spoiling what was meant to be a surprise and informed Redhorn expressing.

How do we handle this one, we just told him his going to be a wee dad and his wife was probably saving the news for a later.

It is okay Toad, Teresa’s been a little off for the last few weeks, and we were hoping that she might be pregnant! And Redhorn you just confirmed it, wow, who needs doctors Gabe then looks at Teresa and asks Redhorn to take her out of whatever he did to her, with his bright red eyes he looks into Teresa’s eyes and enthraller’s her not to be frightened of them as Vampires and to except them, within seconds Teresa was back feeling relaxed as if she walked in hearing Gabe laughing for the first time asking.

Hi honey, who do we have here? She looks to Redhorn and then at Toad as he stood up and graciously bowed with all the flare of a Musketeer, revealing a soft rustic voice whilst looking into her eyes expressing, Hello fair lady. Teresa blushes releasing a soft sigh whilst placing her hand upon her heart whilst commenting on his dashing personality.

So, you’re a charming Vampire, as well as handsome. Gabe can see what Redhorn has done by taken away her fear, so she can cope with sudden shock etc., but Gabe had to ask.

Is this going to affect her memory when you enthral humans, or can you do this to me to get me to do whatever you want? Redhorn then looks at Gabe as he senses frustrations and reluctance as he sips his tea and watches Teresa in the kitchen humming to a tune as she puts away her shopping. No Gabe, if we enthral someone to do something for us, it is like giving them hypnotic suggestion they become useless like puppets. It is usually when we feed, but we need your complete attention, so we do not enthral, we ask! And with Teresa eventually she will gain her memory but slowly. Gabe then thinks about what they have just explained and has one more question, though he dreads the answer asking?

Could you feed on us when you’re done?

Yes, we could. But we like you lad Toad grins as Redhorn explains their ways adding, Due to the vast number of Vampires, there is no policing, but there is a code we live by. To put it simply, we do not kill for sport but to feed whilst leaving the innocence and take out the bad rubbish that harm others. Gabe nods though he has one more question as he looks them both in the eyes and asks.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I was wondering can you fly?

Yes, we do. But we call it Gliding. Gabe gets up and walks to the kitchen, he is thinking. While he makes another cup-of-tea banging the little spoon on the inside of the cup placing it in the sink, when Gabe turns and looks at them both with a smile deciding to put them out of their misery and states,

Then I guess we have a lot of talking to do, so how can I help you. Redhorn was as happy as was Toad, Teresa heard a knock at the door as her nosy neighbour Helen from next door, noticing their guests and was curious about them deciding to see them for herself.

It’s Helen from next door; I’ll get rid of her while you guys talk. Teresa walked up the passageway and opened the front door, seeing Helen standing right in the doorway as she tried to look around her as Teresa deliberately stood in her path blocking her view asking?

What is it this time Helen. Teresa was so frustrated with this woman always poking her nose in where it does not belong. You know dear, I’ve noticed your guests are a little unusual, are you alright dear. Helen is still trying to peek in as she tries to worm her way in pass Teresa and then without any warning, she pushes her way through, forcing Teresa with her arm to one side and takes off down the hallway with Teresa’s growing frustration and anger towards this woman and shouts out.

"Helen, you dam BITCH! STOP! I said, STOP!" But she was not listening, her lack of respect and her insatiable appetite for putting her nose in someone else’s business, forces her to run down the hallway when she suddenly comes to a stop in the kitchen, eluding Teresa’s forceful hand when she then noticed Redhorn, Toad and Gabe sitting at the table discussing business when Teresa’s voice lowers and apologises.

I’m sorry honey, but the old cow pushed her way through.

Ignoring Teresa’s insult, Helen was stunned, mesmerise, and for once did not know what to say as she looked at Redhorn and then at Toad, noticing Redhorn’s long black hair entwined with red feathers whilst her eyes then washed over at Toad’s alluring good looks. She is smitten, then casually asked who they are only, Teresa was not in the mood and not to mention she was pissed! Having to always put up with such nosey behaviour, but! No more, as the words flow from her tongue igniting.

Get out you bloody BITCH, I didn’t invite you in!

Toad with his sultry charm and husky voice stands and walks over whilst reaching for her hand; Helen was blushing, extremely catty as a smirk grows from the side of her mouth. Teresa visualises wiping her face with floor, but she sees Redhorn wink at her getting the impression to do nothing and to allow what happens to unfold.

You are very charming sir. Helen with her nose in the air as she flusters a little, with the chill of his lips he places a sweet kiss on her hand that she will never forget as Helen giggles like a girl. Toad’s still holding her hand then raises his head slowly, Helen’s romantic impression soon change when she can see his face change to a fearful creature, with looks of a demon as he draws her close. She screams, unable to move whilst seeing the yellow in his eyes glow, noticing the purple blue veins sprout beneath his skin, his teeth drip with saliva wishing to taste her blood as Toad echo’s a sound of fear roaring with thunder and demands.

You are not welcomed here, go!

Helen runs screaming down the hallway as she slams the front door behind her yelling Monster, Monster. She keeps yelling as she runs back to her place next door listening for their front door slamming, Toads’ facial feature return to normal as he calmly sits back down giving both Teresa and Gabe smile. Teresa in turn gives Redhorn and Toad a beaming smile when she had to ask, Do you do that a lot because that’s, bloody Awesome! Toad explains how frustrated Teresa was with Helen and decided to do Teresa a favour so that she never turns up again explaining, Yes, we do that a lot. But only when we must…. on the occasion, we do have a little fun. But I can see she is very annoying. Teresa appreciate Toads help but holds her stomach as she goes to the bathroom, Gabe noticed this, but he does not know if she knows she is pregnant when Toad then suggests, Ask her Gabe, if she doesn’t know then tell her. With a little encouragement from Toad as he waves his hands forward, Gabe gets up and walks to the bathroom and knocks first as he opens the door and walks in asking, Honey are you all right, you look a little off. By any chance did you see the doctor today? Teresa looks up at Gabe and replies while Redhorn and Toad are listening with anticipation when Teresa gave Gabe the news whispering.

Yes, and it looks like you are going to be a dad, although I don’t like the morning sickness. Teresa starts gagging throwing her head down the toilet while Gabe looks on not knowing what to do, hearing Teresa’s pleas, Honey could you please go, I don’t want you to see me like this While regurgitating everything she ate today sending Gabe running out the bathroom, looking at Redhorn and Toad as he walks over to the table and sits down curious when causally he asks.

I hope she’s not like that all the way through the pregnancy?

Depends on the woman, some have it all the way through and others for several moons. Redhorn replies when Gabe’s focused his eyes on Toad waiting for an answer too, it is not something Toad wishes to discuss when he blurts out, Yes, what Redhorn said? Redhorn then changes the subject getting back to the reason they have come so far and why they are here, then looks up at Gabe and asks, Is there any way I can find out about my family tree and where they are buried? Feeling like something to eat as he thinks about what Redhorn has said, Gabe stood up and walks to the kitchen to fix dinner for Teresa and himself as Gabe then answers him replying, I would imagine you would know more about that than I would, being that you were there.

    CHAPTER

    2

Redhorn then explains how he was banished from the tribe and was never to return. He was hoping records would tell him where to find his wife’s grave, and if his child had survived, giving him descendants, That’s a hard one, the only suggestion I can come up with is to go back to where you were turned which was.... Gabe then waits for an answer as Redhorn then said, 1860 Gabe dropped the knife on the floor and sat back in his chair astounded, amazed, whilst looking straight at Redhorn finding what he has just said was incredible when he blurts out.

You’re kidding right, you were turned in - ‘1860’ - Cowboys and Indians and stagecoaches, saloons & quick draws? Redhorn nods with a smile agreeing with Gabe concurring this was his way of life, and with only a smile and lack of enthusiasm he calmly rests his elbows on the table and softly replies.

Yes, that was my home - my time. And I was with my beautiful wife, Gem. Gabe stands up and walks away from the table picking up the knife, when Teresa walks into the kitchen and heard everything as she stands alongside Gabe and just looks up at him as she rubs her back replying to what she has just overheard expressing, Wow honey, you have a real live Indian warrior in our home Teresa raises a cheeky smile whilst locking eyes with Redhorn and queries.

Tell me something Red, have women changed from your time and ours?

Be careful with your answer Red, she’s a woman! Toad grins.

Teresa turns to Toad and gives him a glare thinking it does not matter what century men come from, they are all the same with a quick response warning, You do not want to try my patients Scotsman! I am pregnant. Toad backs off with a smirk as Redhorn answers her question without fear as he looks her straight in the eye and states, No they are still bossy! Gabe chuckles a little as he catches the look on Teresa face having to wipe the smile off his face whilst shrugging his shoulders, when she looks up at her husband rolling her eyes. Teresa then walks into the kitchen to finish what Gabe started cooking, while Gabe thinks for a minute and he did not have much of a choice but to ask this question, Before you were turned, how did you burry you are dead? Did you keep records to indicate where they are, you know like a headstone or something? Redhorn thought about it and all he could say as Teresa stopped what she was doing wanting to hear his answer as he replied, We burn our dead, so their ashes would return to our red Earth and in return we have buffalo for food and skins for breach cloth and bedding. Teresa comments on Redhorn’s way of life back in the 1860’s and questions, It must have been very hard for you in your time, considering what you’ve seen now, you must think back and realise the same thing. Redhorn’s not sure how to answer considering his old life was that of simplicity and freedom finding these modern times are restricted as he listens to Gabe then looks up at Teresa and replied, No Teresa, I don’t. Teresa left it at that giving him a smile then continues with her dinner when she apologies to her husband for interrupting hearing Gabe pick up where he left off and stresses, You need to go back to where you were turned. Redhorn’s thoughts were scrambled having never gone back, finding it so painful to return where he left his wife Gem.

Redhorn felt conflicted with-in his thoughts whilst staring Gabe in the eyes from the across the table, and though it pains him to return and with a straight face he asks.

Could you, come with us and help?

I’ll sleep on it and give you my answer in the morning, Teresa and I have a lot of celebrating to do tonight. Gabe grins.

Redhorn could only nod as he understands while Toad gives the lass a wink as they stand and take their leave and wished them both a wonderful evening, whilst congratulating them both on their baby. Gabe walked them to the front door and shook both Redhorn and Toads hand, feeling the cold go straight through him dismissing it saying, I’ll have my answer for you in the morning, see you then. The front door then closes as Gabe takes a moment to reflect, as Redhorn and Toad swiftly left as if the wind picked them up and carried them away. Redhorn walks along the pathways discreetly avoiding the streetlamps while observing the locals, some duck inside having never seen an Indian before. Staring, snickering, as each word spoken explodes like war drums as it cuts like a knife, and not even Redhorn’s smile does not give them comfort preferring to hide behind closed doors. Redhorn continues the path as his thirst increases hoping to feed, it is cold as the snow starts to fall but the icy temperatures do not affect Redhorn in the slightest. Hearing the hungry sounds of homeless cat’s ‘n’ dogs searching for food as they tip over trash cans, making a racket as the thirst continues to grow. It has been weeks since his last fed; Toad has left for his feeding and prefers to dine alone, but Redhorn’s thirst escalates at this point taking a human would suffice as he continues along the path finding the streets deserted, wanting nothing more than to return to the forest he has been raised in knowing there are vast numbers of wildlife to hunt. Redhorn’s aware of humans approaching him from behind as they have kept their distance, he is curious, he grins, smelling their scent pretending his unaware of their presence whilst listening to the rubbish that spills from their mouth expressing.

Hey, Dave it’s an Indian, let’s have some fun!

Yeah, maybe we should offer him a little Jack Daniels. He laughs.

Redhorn continues walking smiling the whole time waiting to see what they would do, finding the distraction a welcome as Dave shouts out, Hey! you Indian. What are you doing around here in my neighbourhood, you want to scalp my people?

The men continue to laugh aloud while taunting him, but Redhorn keeps walking while smirking and then without warning, Redhorn disappears, causing the men to wonder where he disappears too as they stop suddenly turning to each other bewildered? Dave takes a breath whilst observing his surroundings when his mate Digs expresses his delight, He’s scared, we got him now. Though Dave’s not sure as an uneasy feeling washes over him when digs taunts a little more, Come out Indian man, we can have a drink. Only Redhorn was already standing behind one of them, he is quiet not even the movement of his body makes a sound as Redhorn reaches out and grabs his head surprising Dave and bites hard into Digs pulsating vein as the blood rushes down his throat, hearing his mate’s blood curdling screams! Not even willing to stand and defend his mate instead Dave cowardly takes off, within seconds it was all over and not even a smudge of blood to wipe from his mouth. Redhorn then tosses the man like a piece of rubbish amongst the trees as he closes his eyes for a split second, thinking about the oath he has just preached to Gabe.... realising, not everything goes to plan.

Redhorn remains calm though a smile remains hidden, within a few seconds he soon catches up to the second human and decides to face this feebleminded person whilst looking into his eyes. The man keeps taking steps back noticing his ruby, red, flaming eyes and realising he has picked on a Vampire and then pleads for his life.

I am sorry Mister; please! I do not want to die!

I was minding my own business, and you and your dead mate decided to taunt me, why...... Oh yes! Because I am in your neighbourhood! Redhorn taunts.

Redhorn can smell his fear as the aroma was delicious hearing the rush of blood as the heartbeats faster, it is so alluring seeing his canines extend as the white of his fangs are exposed. The man then realises he is not walking away from this, and his fear sends him screaming like a little girl as he trembles where he stands deciding to beg for his life and grovel, I’m sorry Mister, I didn’t mean it. Redhorn then taunts him further while staring down at this human replying, I do not normally play with my food, but you are an exception. Now run. Redhorn encourages the human to go only the human’s a little confused and still, remains within Redhorn’s sight whilst listening to Redhorn repeating.

I think you’re a little hard of hearing, you can go.

The man takes off only to stumble and fall picking himself up shaking and screaming as he calls out for help, knocking over bins tripping over cat’s hearing their shrieks having been startled. The human stops and turns his head whilst bending over catching his breath; he cannot see Redhorn behind him, feeling a little relieved! The dogs are barking as residents yell at the tops of their voices, SHUT-UP. But he is not taking any chances and keeps running, he is not watching where he is going so, he keeps falling having to pick himself up whilst looking over his shoulder and a way out as he screams out in desperation.

"Help me please; a Vampire is going to kill me!" But no one’s listening or gives a dam as Redhorn grows tired of these games; Redhorn reaches out and grabs the human’s arm snapping it like a twig from a tree. Feeling extreme pain, the human falls to the ground holding his broken arm crying like a child and looks up at Redhorn, he can see the human has been defeated only Redhorn shows no emotion hearing the human apologizing over and over and wishing he should have stayed at home with his wife & w2kids. The human clutches his broken arm, taking this time to reflect while looking to the night sky and realises he is not going home, and then his view was blocked by piecing red eyes looking down at him. Noticing his white pointed fangs draping with saliva as he sobs, wishing he were facing a wolf knowing he would have had a fighting chance. But he knew who Redhorn was having been told stories about the nightwalkers, Vampires, only to dismiss such rubbish! Now he feels like the one who is foolish as he tries to repair what has been wronged, pleading for his life as he begs.

No, no, no, I am sorry man. I am sorry! Redhorn’s heard enough as he reaches out and lifts him by the scruff of his neck as he dangles before a frustrated, hungry, Vampire, and then with his final words he sobs, I have a family Mister. Moaning through his words whilst looking straight into the devil’s eyes, though it falls on deaf ears whilst hearing Redhorn calmly reply.

Then why are you out on the streets taunting people, and not at home with them.

Redhorn already knew the answer not wanting to waste another minute on this poor excuse of a human, as Redhorn viciously tears into his flesh then drinks the warm blood as it flows from his neck; the human becomes limp as his heart then stops beating! Redhorn then casts his body to the side and walks away; it has been a long night as the morning sunrise comes up over the horizon. With swift speed Redhorn waits outside Gabe and Teresa home, Toad then joins him as he stands alongside him and waits patiently for Gabe and Teresa to awake. Toad can hear them rustling about happy they have awakened, while standing under a tree across the street assuming.

I can hear the lass; shall we knock now. As the sun shines through their bedroom window, when Redhorn reaches out with his arm holding his eager friend back with a simple jester of his hand placed gently on his coat replying, No, not yet they’re a little busy right now. Toad then takes a minute and listens to what they are doing and then he catches on saying, Oh, that never changes does it? Toad then gives Redhorn a cheeky smile, unable to block his ears, his chuckles grow louder as Gabe rolls over as their bodies connect beneath the sheets, her long blond hair falls over her face as he gently sweeps it aside. He kisses her softly when he pulls back and looks deep into her eyes whispering, You’re so beautiful. There were no more words spoken just Gabe showing his wife just how much he loves her, lifting her body feeling her connect with his force, sliding his arms around her waist as they move in tight motion as they both stride for an explosive release! The sound of orgasmic pleasures penetrates their muscles sending their senses into overdrive as they take a deep breath and hold each other close for another hour. The alarm clock sounds and not wanting to move from Gabe’s arms or the warmth of his body he then whispers.

How are you feeling this morning?

Right now, not bad! Gabe did not mean her orgasmic pleasures; he was referring to her pregnancy adding, No honey I meant how’s your morning sickness?

Not so bad now. I could even stomach breakfast this morning. She happily informs, Gabe’s smiling whilst gazing down at her beautiful face kissing her tenderly, he knew he could not resist whatever she asks, Okay then, what would you like. Teresa then sits up and gets out of bed as Gabe then wonders what she is doing asking, Where are you going. As he watches her go to the bathroom, she then quickly replies without turning, I must pee again, I’m always peeing! Toad’s smiling from across the street listening in as he can hear everything that has been said and done when he turns to face Redhorn and said, I tell you it’s been a while since I’ve felt the body of a woman close to me. Redhorn gives Toad that look and reminds him, You had your chance back in 1899, but you kept seeing your wife’s face remember! Toad did not want to be reminded thanking Redhorn for reminding him of a certain event back in 1900 replying, Okay how about the pretty native lass, who wanted to give you pleasure, but you refused because you were going back to your wife once you find her. Redhorn did not want to talk anymore, nor did he wish to discuss Sex as he grows impatient wishing to have an answer to his question listening to Teresa and Gabe go about their morning hearing Teresa calling from the toilet asking.

Honey, could you make me bowl of porridge with chopped banana on top. Gabe could not believe what he has just heard when he cries out asking.

What, say that again I think I didn’t hear you correctly? While across the road Toad and Redhorn also pull faces as they listen in, Gabe then opens the door whilst she sits on the toilet and repeats what she has just said asking.

Did you say porridge with chopped banana on top? Teresa’s pants sit around her ankles feeling the cold while she smiles and nods when she finished and starts pulling up her pants, wondering, why Gabe’s making so important out of porridge? As she flushes and gets off the toilet washing her hands. Gabe’s bewildered expression whilst looking at her waiting for her to repeat what she just said, though Teresa just gives her husband a funny look and replied.

Honey what is wrong? You can cook porridge with your eyes shut, what is the problem? Gabe then pauses and replies.

Yes, I know I can do it, but you hate porridge! And then she stops and had to think about it for a minute and Gabe was right, Teresa hates it - she turns and faces Gabe with a weird expression and replied.

That is so strange.... I do hate porridge! And yet, I feel like porridge with chopped bananas. Gabe gives up deciding pregnant women are too complicated, preferring to start breakfast when a knock at the door prompts Gabe to answer knowing its Toad and Redhorn, Gabe knows who it is and without moving or walking down the long hallway he just asks them to come on in while he cooks over the stove. Gabe turns away for a second when he looks up and saw them by his side, causing Gabe to jump a little in fright as he takes his hand holding it close to his heart as though he was going to have a heart attack when he heard Toad asking?

Hello Gabe. Toad then stood by Teresa and whispers in her ear good morning and reassures her by saying, I used to love porridge too lass. He smiles and goes and to sits down at the table, Redhorn then walks up and asks Teresa’s how she is, whilst catching her in deep thought. Again, he asks when she snaps out of it and wonders about something, hoping it is not what she thinks asking?

By any chance do you have super hearing?

    Yes. Toad beams.

Teresa’s eyes grow wide when suddenly whilst releasing a heavy sigh and snaps, Oh my god, you were listening to us this morning? Redhorn gives her a wink as he grabs a seat at the table, Gabe places Teresa’s breakfast in front of her as she sits down thinking about how they made love this morning and Redhorn and Toad heard everything. Taking the spoon while Gabe could not help but shake his head in disbelief, his beautiful, pregnant wife is devouring her porridge and chopped up banana, whilst Gabe gives up. And has no understanding of women whatsoever, Teresa’s looking at Redhorn and Toad knowing what they heard this morning, while taking mouthfuls of her porridge, knowing, she referred to porridge as a pile of shit! Teresa still cannot get this image of Toad and Redhorn listening in on their making love, this makes her a little uncomfortable when she turns to Gabe who is watching her eat porridge and states, They heard us making love this morning. Gabe knew they had super hearing, but he never realised the distance until now, scratching his nose when he looks to both and said, Seriously, you can hear us from across the street. Redhorn nods whilst Toad still sports a Bonner smile, Gabe could tell he liked what he heard but the thought of listening through walls…then snaps, That’s amazing!

Gabe feels a thump to his arm from Teresa when Redhorn stood up and apologies for eaves dropping it is something they cannot turn off, but Toad likes it whilst smiling at Teresa as she did not have much choice and was okay after a while though when she looks over at Toad - she does not get the same impression as though he enjoys eavesdropping! But somehow, it does not surprise her considering the smile still edged on his face, as she looks down at her bowl of porridge noticing it is all gone. She was surprised as was Gabe who takes a bite of his toast and casually asks her.

Do you like your porridge honey?

This was so delicious; it doesn’t taste anything like I remembered, do we have anymore? Toad then laughs and comments seeing the look on Teresa’s face when he blurts out saying, You know lasses, you must really love porridge.

No, she used to hate the stuff! That is up until now! Gabe snaps.

Redhorn could not help but smile while he gives Teresa a wondrous look, as it takes him back to a time with his wife Gem replying, It’s the baby, my wife wanted nothing, but pig’s feet sprinkled with wild herbs over a flame. Right at that moment Teresa holds her hand over her mouth and runs to the bathroom and throws up all the porridge Gabe had made for her; hearing Gabe call out asking.

    Honey, are you okay.

Yes, can we not say what Redhorn just said - please Teresa then comes out and sits back down looking a little green as she pushes her bowl away with her hand, deciding on just a cup of tea holding it in both hands as she takes it to her lips while she looks over at Redhorn and speaks.

Your wife, she didn’t have a lot of choices, did she? Taking sips of her tea seeing a wink from his eye and that amazing smile, she finds it hard to stay mad or upset with him when she flashes a smile and replied.

I’ll take that as a no. She whispers.

Redhorn’s nervous when he asks Gabe about the question, he was asked last night as Teresa then speaks up before Gabe could answer and said, Would you both look after, him? Teresa sits there holding her cup of tea whilst looking at their stunned faces seeing the surprised look on Redhorn’s face especially when he stands up and quickly replied.

Of course, does this mean you allow Gabe to come with us? Teresa did not have to say anything Gabe knew she would not blurt out something like that if she did not mean it, he looks at both Redhorn and Toad and immediately replied, You heard the boss, it’s a yes. Redhorn was happy to hear the news as was Toad who had grave concerns leaving Teresa on her own asking, What about you lasses, would you be alright on your own once Gabe is gone. She looks at Gabe and says with a smile. Yes, I will be fine. I will be staying with my parents until you return. Gabe could not believe what luck to find a wife such as her, but he had to make sure asking, Are you sure honey? I do not want to upset you, this pregnancy it is a special time in our lives right now. Teresa takes her husband’s hands as she tries to explain about how her parents, Rick and Jill do not see her often enough. And they do not know about the baby yet, making this a perfect opportunity to tell them and she does not mind being pampered Redhorn a little either. Teresa’s aware her parents finding the man of her choosing not worthy of their daughter, pleading, with her husband to follow his dream and accompany Redhorn on his journey when she had to insist and repeat, Go help Redhorn, he is a nice guy and misses his wife terribly. And besides, how many professors actually go on a road trip with a subject they teach? Gabe kisses his wife wondering how he ever got so lucky and regretfully, he agrees with her as he also points out replying.

Unfortunately, no one would believe me.

You can tell your grandchildren all about this day, they will believe you. Feeling Teresa’s soft touch to the side of his face while gently giving him a kiss, leaving him to his business and adding, I will leave once I am finished packing, okay. And I will give the Dean a ring on Monday Raising her eyebrows whilst noticing how Teresa’s looking forward to spending time with her parents, excited about the baby when she adds whilst walking off, And then you can drive me over there, I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when I tell them they’re going to be grandparents. Teresa happily makes her way over to the bedroom whilst singing her favourite song, leaving Redhorn and Toad totally amazed as their smiles almost tattooed on their faces. Teresa takes this opportunity with a few documents she had tucked away, having planned weeks, earlier behind Gabe’s back - - knowing - - he does not trust lawyers or the sight of her parents especially Jill whom he considers the ‘Holly Cow’ To secure the house in his name leaving the documents she had her lawyers draw up in case of her death, leaving Gabe the house her parents bought for her when they married. Gabe never approved of her making a will, so she led him to believe she never went through with it, Teresa wanted him to have the house. So, she slipped the documents into the first dresser draw beside their bed, knowing if anything should happen to her, he would know where to find them. She closes the draw while listening to her husband explain to his new-found friends, it is best to start at the beginning informing.

Redhorn it is a clever idea we return to where you were turned, that’s our starting point Okay? So, can you remember that far back?

It has been sometime, I’m certain the spirits will guide us? He murmurs.

Gabe could only agree for there is nothing else they can do apart from spending enough time exploring every avenue, leaving no stone unturned as Redhorn and Toad happily concur.

    CHAPTER

    FLASHBACK: 1860

Redhorn folds back the flap on the tepee and steps out whilst looking around knowing the young braves are preparing for a challenge, there’s excitement, as Redhorn stands clear whilst the young warriors echo a chant. The flap folds back once again as an Indian maiden comes forth with her head still down as she watches her step, listening to her husband warning’s regarding the young braves. She is beautiful, graceful, as her eyes of blue catch her husband’s gaze as her long black hair falls over her face as she takes her hand and slowly sweeps her mane aside. Sensing the breeze off the prairie as she breathes in the aromas of the wild flora, it is her favourite whilst showing a beautiful smile, as she stands alongside him as he again warns, Gem be careful, the young braves act like wild ponies, eager to run. He then turns facing her as he gazes into her eyes of blue, as she lowers her brow giving him that look expressing, Stop! I will be fine, it is Little Bear who should have your attention. whilst taking her hand and pleads with her to take care and not overdo informing, We should be back before the sun falls. Redhorn then looks up seeing Little Bear running up towards them, expressing his excitement of the hunt as the little warrior tears through the braves shouting, I’m hunting too. As little Bear ploughs ahead stopping short of running into the tepee, seeing Redhorn fold his arms whilst listening to the sound of his heavy breathing as though he were running from a hungry bear. Hearing Gem’s laughter finding the little warrior endearing as he looks up at Redhorn and puffs.

I’m ready to go big brother.

Are we looking forward to the hunt today? Redhorn chuckles.

He nods out of breath unable to say a word and waits by Redhorn’s side to go; Gem can see Little Bear was already worn out though he was full excitement, giving her husband that look asking him to take it easy with his little brother considering he is just a boy, but Redhorn feels in time he will become a warrior and his place is with the braves not a woman when Redhorn then looks down at Little Bear and asks.

Are you sure your ready Little Bear, you look a little winded. With a smile as wide as his bow you could not keep the little warrior away as Little Bear waits patiently, Redhorn can see a knife tucked into his breech cloth, and nudges Gem softly to take- a- look as she then noticed the blade and in a soft voice she expresses.

He wants to be like you.

Let’s hope the spirits are with him then. Redhorn murmurs.

Little Bear was curious wanting to know what they will be hunting today, Are we hunting bear, big brother. Redhorn was shocked as was Gem, who insisted Redhorn keep away from such large animals hoping he would listen to her concerns, only Redhorn understood and quickly replied, Oh no, not bear, how would we bring it back? We are hunting Rabbit! Little Bear scowls as he folds his arms looking up at his big brother, he wanted to hunt like the young braves replying, NO Rabbits, they are small; I want to hunt a bear or a mountain cat! As little bear then mimics a fight with a cat causing his bow to fall off his shoulder whilst his arrows fall to the ground, Redhorn burst into a soft chuckle whilst covering his mouth as he watched Little Bears theatrics of what he imagines a fight with a mountain cat would be like. Only, they have the day to accomplish a fruitful hunt as Redhorn looks to the sun and decided enough was enough demanding.

Okay, Little Bear. Pick up your bow and arrows, I would like to be back before sunset with many rabbits!

Redhorn helps little bear gather up his warrior weapons, while looking up at Gem seeing the smile, he loves so much hearing Redhorn let out a blissful sigh whilst shaking his head a little. Redhorn then stands sliding his hand around Gems expanding waist whilst pulling her in, feeling his unborn child against his taught, defined torso whilst gazing into those eyes of blue and reassures her he will be back before sunset. He kisses her softly at first and then with his undying passion, when with a heavy heart he stops, and whispered, I love you. Until an annoying echo starts ringing in his ears, listening to Gem’s laughter as she calmly replies.

I love you always, be safe.

    Let’s go. Little Bear snaps.

Redhorn releases Gem ignoring the inpatients of his little brother and starts to walk away, waving as his attention then focus on little Bear as they both walk towards the edge of the forest. Redhorn turns and with his strong bow in his hand he raises it in the air to Gem signalling his goodbyes as they both disappear into the forest. Gem’s eyes are wide and full of love whilst gently runs her hands over her unborn child; she hopes the spirits are with them in the forest today, watching over them so they can return home safely to her and their baby. Redhorn and Little Bear enter the forest of lush green leaves and trees that are as tall as mountains, with shapes and sizes of plant life with an array of beautiful flowers and wild birds of varied species. The only dilemma is what path to take as little bear has already chosen. Little Bear walks while holding his bow and arrow, his crouching down! Waiting for his first rabbit as Redhorn tries not to laugh while following behind, he enjoys his time with his little brother hearing the inpatients of Little Bear as they were only minutes into their hunt asking, Redhorn, when do you think I will get my first rabbit? As he walks and talks and hunts at the same time reacting to every sound, a rustling shrub, or a sudden flight of a bird? Desperately hoping to aim his bow on a fury, unsuspecting rabbit releasing his first arrow whilst listening to Redhorn as he causally walks behind as though it was a stroll over the prairie replying.

Little bear, when you hunt you also must remain quiet.

Little Bear keeps to the path when suddenly there was movement under a shrub as Little Bear moves in quietly and waits, and then he shoots and catches his first rabbit! Placing the carcass over his shoulder as the warm blood runs down his back, he then moves on to the next one excited about his first kill! Little Bear then announces while he continues along the path not taking his eyes off his surroundings and states, I’m going to bring back 15 rabbits. Little Bear treads carefully while he keeps watch not wanting any to escape as more keep coming as he aims and fires, Little Bears shoulder now holds seven rabbits as their blood marks his shoulder as a sign of a great warrior! Redhorn remains behind and follows though it is a relaxing day for him; his brother on the other hand takes this seriously, Redhorn could not help but smile seeing his younger brother slowly becoming a man and asks.

So, Little Bear do you think you’ll reach your target of 15?

As many as you Big Brother, maybe more. A slight smile from the corner of Redhorn’s mouth appears having to admire Little Bears determination to exceed his amount, they have not stopped for a break since they left the comforts of their tepee. Listening to Redhorn from behind as he looks to the top of the trees to the surroundings of the forest, the animals are restless today he believes and encourages, Then we must hurry before night fall. Little Bear keeps a watch as he grows tired Redhorn having to wait between kills, so he takes this time to question his brother about his tattoo! Unfortunately, Redhorn too feels the weight of the day waiting for more kills, deciding it is a great distraction as he waits for the first question when Little Bear stops centre of the pathway and turns asking.

Did it hurt, when they did your tattoo?

Of course, but a warrior doesn’t show his pain. Redhorn insists.

Little Bear nods and decides to keep going when Redhorn feels it is time for a break so he can explain to Little Bear the story on how he was given his name, when another rabbit came out of nowhere seeing Little Bear aim his arrow releasing it. Hitting his target adding the rabbit to his already mounting total as he sits and quenches his thirst, Redhorn noticed an old tree trunk deciding to make himself comfortable while he too quenches his thirst. Redhorn smiles whilst watching his young sibling patiently waits egger to listen, he grins, then slowly starts his story from the beginning, It wasn’t a challenge Little Bear; it was a fight to the death! Rabbits are sprouting from under the foliage only Little Bears attention is fixed on Redhorn’s story, as Redhorn continues.

"The Beast with its bright red eyes came out of the clearing where I was to start my challenge, he was as wide as my tepee and bigger than my horse, and he was as black as the night with the strength of many horses. I stood still armed with only my knife as I remained
