Early manuscript readers are invaluable in any project, and this, certainly, was no exception. I am so grateful to have had an amazing group of readers: Barbara Marino; Kathleen Coolidge, Robin Ray; Broadway veteran Ron Schwinn; Harumbe defender, Dominic Marino; master of brevity, Dick Kuehn; and two of the smartest ten year olds I’ve ever met, Wyatt Lupo and Harry Aguilera.
A very special thank you to Miriam Stoddard whose original artwork brought Lily and Gil to life.
As always, a special thank you to my husband, Harris Baseman.
FOREWORD
I am fortunate in my role as a Zoo Director to see so many people who, each in their own way, dedicate their lives to the conservation of animals and ultimately, to the conservation of human beings too. Whether they take care of animals in our charge, educate visitors to the zoo about these wonderful animals and their habitats or work as conservation biologists in the animals’ natural habitats, each individual is committed to preserving these animals and their habitats. I also get to meet so many people who don’t work at a zoo or with animals, but they too are working hard on behalf of our shared future. People like Peggy Baseman, who, with their own gifts and skills make a difference.
Peggy’s book not so Silly Lily, is a wonderful, whimsical adventure with important messages about fostering respect for all living creatures, protecting wild habitats and the importance of family.
Natural habitats all around the world are shrinking and becoming isolated due to human activities. This trend is due to human need, greed and sometimes simply a lack of understanding.
This book helps plant the seeds of understanding and individual responsibility to take action in young people and perhaps those adults who read to, or along with, their children.
