A Dark & Terrible Thing Is Coming

    Pamela K. Kinney

    It’s coming,

    A terrible thing

    It’s scary, and

    flashing a toothy grin.

    So, you better beware,

    Have everything ready

    Decorate appropriately,

    For the end is near.

    Just remember one thing,

It only comes but once a year

On Halloween, costumed in orange and black,

A mask upon its gruesome face.

It rings your doorbell with persistence,

    Innocent child or demonic being

Feed it candy, just to be safe.

    Trick or Treat. ¹

    All Souls Day

    Joseph A Farina

prayers for loved souls to purge their passing

reveal our grief this all souls day

the earth gives up its dead to-night

    waiting to be received—

    carrying marzipan skeletons

to place on their tombs we bring our offerings

of water, wine, oil and grain

sit and eat with them beside us

sharing our lives with them again—

i begin to recite the prayers for the dead

with the cross, the book, and sword

promising salvation and the cleansing of sins

of those whom we this day commemorate

to pass from their darkness to eternal light ¹

It was the end of September... or maybe the beginning of October; the leaves were falling from the trees. Jordan swiftly walked along the carpeted forest trail, trying his best not to panic, to look behind him. He knew it was out there somewhere, hovering above, but he couldn’t let it sense his awareness. It had followed him here and now everything was at stake. His life, the lives of everyone he knew and cared for, they were all forfeited if he faltered. And so, he kept his head down
