About this ebook

Shawn Wainwright's parents had lots of money and a well-kept secret. But Shawn didn't want to live off his parents' money because his parents were controlling parents. To prove he can make it without their help, Shawn sets out on his own.
Like many young adults, after being away for several years, he longed to enjoy the comforts his parents offered. But once he arrived at his parents' home, he finds they are out of town on work. Thinking he has the house to himself with no worries, he relaxes next to his parents' large in-ground swimming pool in their backyard.
What happened next changed his life. Strange-looking flying vehicles appeared out of nowhere above the treetops. These vehicles must be a military exercise! But no! The military would never assemble in such a formation, and the flashing lights were too bright. If these were not some new US military aircraft, they must be from a foreign country. A foreign government has somehow invaded the airspace of the greatest nation on the planet! But Shawn is wrong in his estimation. This military comes from another world!

    INTRODUCTION

Since the time of creation, humans have had a thirst for knowledge. That thirst has taken humans to the inner parts of the Earth and to the vast, never-ending depths of space. What drives a person with a desire to explore the unknown and figure out the impossible? Some would say it’s embedded within the soul and yearns to escape. Others may say it’s necessary to know what it will take to survive in an ever-changing environment. Whatever the reason, humans are on a journey to seek, find, understand, and explain the unexplainable. Human beings from the Earth are the masters of the universe—or so we seem to think. We know all. If we don’t know the answer to a problem, scientists will attempt to find out the answer and the reason as to why we did not see the answer in the first place!

In past times, human beings explored space. Countries competed to see which would be the first to explore and colonize a planet in our galaxy. It appeared there was nothing humankind could not do. Alas! There was one thing people could not figure out. It has plagued men since time began. It has caused brothers to go head-to-head and best friends to become mortal enemies. That dilemma is how to get along with each other without using war to settle differences. It takes only one person to start the ball of envy rolling. It takes only one person to brainwash a nation, to control an entire population of foreigners. Two world wars can attest to that.

Does life exist on other planets? We’ve spent years trying to prove that life exists in the cosmos. It’s part of our search to explain the unexplainable. We must be the only intelligent life in the universe. In the many decades of space exploration and the sending out of radio-wave messages to the far end of space as we know it, not once has there been a response from other planets. But what if some world out in space received those messages? A planet that the scientists of today do not know exists. What if we are not the only intelligent life in the universe? What if there was another planet in the far reaches of space. A world tucked deep within a different universe? A planet more advanced than the Earth, yet further behind this planet in some ways? What would happen if the Earth’s inhabitants contacted the inhabitants of that planet from a parallel universe?

We know the United States as the leader of the free nations, and many other countries regard the United States as formidable. A strong president or military general have been the difference in leading the way and changing the United States’ history. But sometimes history has a way of repeating itself and producing the one person at the right time to change history for the good of all humans. Sometimes it’s a person people would not ordinarily look up to for courage and inspiration.

The aftermath of wars can influence the world and how people view each other. It was the age of computers on Earth, and many people felt books no longer served a purpose. Why open a book when a hand-held electronic reader was just as handy and could place many books at a person’s disposal at the touch of a button? This new electronic age allowed people on Earth to recycle millions and millions of books. Why should a tree get destroyed when an electronic device served just as well? The entire planet was onboard with the disposal of written books. Over time, humans on Earth destroyed most of all written books.

Today, the people of Earth store all books on electronic devices such as computers or electronic readers.

This story is an account of a planet in a distant universe similar to Earth. A world that had kept silent from Earth. But some inhabitants of that planet broke the silence and traveled to our world. The silence got broken for a reason. But what was that reason? Did a particular message from Earth cause the inhabitants of that distant planet to react? Did that planet perceive the message as a threat? The signals have already been sent out. Is this world prepared to receive a response? These are just a few questions needing answers.

As the people from Earth want answers, the aliens breaking the silence could ask more questions: Are we a peaceful planet? and Why do we want to contact beings on a different planet?

Many would say we have everything we need here on Earth—or do we?

What will happen when the inhabitants of two planets from different universes come into contact? Will both worlds have the same intentions of letting peace reign? Some would say no. But Earth is the most fantastic planet in all universes! Will those radio-wave messages sent into space cause the little planet called Earth to be invaded by aliens from a different galaxy? Who would dare answer our call into space and step foot on Earth to cause problems? Let us discover the answers to some of these questions.

    CHAPTER ONE

    A Faraway Land

The land was dry as any desert. For miles around, the only view was of hills and hills of sand. In the middle of those vast hills of sand was the only visible vegetation surrounding the sole water source for several miles in any direction. As Landry rode his mule-drawn cart down one of these hills leading to the water, he could feel the tug of his mule on the reins. The mule could smell the water and was eager to have a refreshing drink.

Steady, Freeborn! Landry said, trying not to raise his voice. He pulled the reins on the mule tighter to slow the cart’s pace.

Freeborn was the name of the mule pulling the cart. Landry considered Freeborn his best friend since he spent more time with the animal than many other people in the area. Freeborn wasn’t just a friend; the mule was family to him.

Finally arriving at the water hole, Landry drove the wagon to a wooden trough where the animals drank, next to the central water hole. He continued to sit on his wagon as Freeborn took his fill of the refreshing water.

Landry was tall and muscular. His head was bald, so he wore a brimmed hat to combat the rays from the sun beating down on him. His facial hair was trimmed into a short black mustachio. He had a brown scarf wrapped around his neck to help further protect him from the sun. He wore a blue silk shirt that buttoned halfway up in front and was tucked inside black trousers. Each trouser leg was tucked inside calf-length black, laced boots.

Landry was thinking about what he would do once he arrived in the city. His only obligation was to deliver the goods on his cart to the merchant who had paid in advance, and it did not seem a significant task to deliver goods already purchased by a buyer. He thought if he could find the merchant business early, he would have ample time to examine the finer things in the city, like a hot bath and a good meal.

Landry and Freeborn started early from his home. They had made this trip more times than he could remember. It was twelve miles to the city of Tyras, and they had traveled almost half that distance. Traveling in that part of the country during the day forced all to look for a water source. In past times, the extreme heat had caused some travelers to abandon wagons for fear of losing their work animals.

Citizens in that area of the planet called the watering hole the Trickle of Hope. It was a fitting name since there was no other fresh water until they reached the city. On hot, cloudless days, a cool sip of water from the Trickle of Hope was a welcome treat to wary travelers. Some travelers did not think the water hole was genuine when they came down the side of the hill. The heat would cause them not to see anyone standing at the Trickle of Hope when people were getting refreshed there. They did not think the people, the animals, the carts, or the water were real. Citizens said heat-affected merchants had walked right into the water, unaware it was life-saving water, until the water was up to their knees.

Merchants seldom stopped there to sell products. It was more about exchanging information with each other. They reserved selling products for the city, but on rare occasions, a few business owners made transactions not meant for the city guards’ eyes.

For many, the Trickle of Hope was a simple resting area. There were no buildings of any kind. A few travelers made camp near the water source, but those camps were always far enough away from the water that they did not prevent other travelers from stopping for a drink. Several large palm trees and more minor scrubs surrounded the water hole. Those giant trees gave some protection from the rays of the sun. Also, the low hills surrounding the water blocked the sandstorms that sometimes erupted in the area. The fresh water seemed to flow from an underground river, but no one had ever taken the time to follow the water back to its source. Instead, citizens took it for granted that the water would be there when they stopped on their journey to and from the city.

Three other horse-drawn carts and two people traveling on horseback were there. Several more people were walking toward the water hole. Twelve to fifteen merchants with carts could rest at the pool comfortably.

The Trickle of Hope also became the chief place to catch up on the latest gossip. Most of the Supreme Council’s newest information was whether the Council was sending troops to help put down the current ruling family.

The day seemed like many other days in which Landry had traveled the road— called the Road of Peace—between the city and the Trickle of Hope. No one knew who had given the sand road its name. From generation to generation, the name stayed the same. Some citizens had ideas about how the name came about. For many, it was the lack of battles taking place on or near the road. Others said it led to the region’s largest city, and everyone wanted peace to reign. Everyone Landry knew called it the Road of Peace, and it was one of two key routes getting to the city.

Sometimes that part of the country would get caught up in wars with neighboring clans. But for the moment, the countryside was all quiet. It was not unusual for unsuspecting travelers to get caught in a battle between two warring families, and they would have to duck for cover to keep from getting caught in a deadly war zone. Landry boasted about having never been caught in a battle. He was not shy in letting fellow travelers know he knew the safe times to travel the road.

For the past few months, neither the clans nor the country had been at war. Landry could only hope it remained that way. After decades of civil unrest, war, and evil dictators sent by the Supreme Council, the country was in disarray. War had touched almost every area of the country. The wars had taken a toll on his family and friends. Most of his relatives had moved to other countries, trying to avoid the conflict. Landry had a few cousins up in the country’s northernmost region.

Citizens said he was one of the luckier ones because his immediate family moved to the Main Lands. Landry did not consider himself lucky. What was fortunate about him staying in a country where a battle could break out at any moment? He wished he could join his family in the Main Lands.

His family had decided to leave for the Main Lands, and he disagreed with them leaving. He always blamed the Supreme Council and the Supreme Elder for any trouble his country was having. His family getting forced to leave was no exception. No matter what went wrong in the country, he knew the Supreme Council and the Supreme Elder had something to do with it. As far back as any Flatlander could remember, they had warred with the Supreme Council.

The name of Landry’s country was the Flatlands. The Flatlands covered a vast area of the planet. The Flatlands did not have another prominent, centralized, populated city except for Tyras. All the other towns were minor in comparison. But loyal citizens populated all areas of the country in great numbers. The Supreme Council preventing the citizens of the Flatlands from representation in the Council was what had caused problems.

The Supreme Council has to get involved with everything this government does. Our government should have never accepted the offer of food aid and military troopers to help feed the hungry and fight internal aggression from rival factions. Landry complained to no one in particular as he dismounted his wagon.

Food aid from the Council is destroying our country. Someone has to stop the Council from interfering with our local government! If I only had the power! I would crush the Supreme Council with a single blow! he threatened.

There were several merchants within hearing distance. One merchant had just arrived and stared in disbelief at Landry sitting on his cart. The same merchant decided it was time to leave a few minutes later, and he gathered the reins to his horses and drove away.

Why are you rushing off, sir? That’s what the Council wants us to do. They want us to rush off instead of standing up for what is right! The Council should pay for all they’ve done to the Flatlands! Landry yelled after the man. The merchant continued to separate himself from Landry with distance. A few other citizens who heard Landry’s outburst just looked at him, but they didn’t speak. Instead, they continued to busy themselves replenishing their barrels with water, attempting to ignore him.

Why should the Supreme Council rule the entire planet? Landry questioned. He was asking anyone who would listen, but no one acknowledged his question at first.

Why should you complain about what the Supreme Council does? Came a voice from behind Landry. Landry turned to see who had spoken. The voice belonged to an older man Landry had never seen at the Trickle of Hope before. But before Landry could respond, a younger man of tremendous height and weight questioned him.

Why don’t you continue on your journey before the Supreme Council comes down on you and all of us?

Other merchants who had been ignoring Landry walked up to make a semicircle around Landry and his cart. They nodded in agreement with the young man, who asked Landry to leave. The citizens’ temperament at the water hole had changed, and Landry felt he was outnumbered.

Come on, Freeborn, Landry said as he gathered his supplies to leave. It’s clear no one around here is interested in becoming free from the iron grip of the Supreme Council!

Since the odds of gaining support from any merchants were slim, it was time for him to leave. The merchants did not like him talking against the Supreme Council. Landry finished collecting his supplies, tightening the tops on the extra water containers, and checking the ropes holding his supplies on the wagon. Without saying another word, he climbed on his wagon, grabbed the reins holding Freeborn, and continued his journey to the city of Tyras. The merchants at the Trickle of Hope continued to stare at Landry as he drove off.

Tyras was the largest city in the Flatlands. Well over ten million people called it home. In contrast to other cities on the planet, the city of Tyras was a city that time had almost forgotten. There were few modern buildings, and the principal modes of transportation were horses and horse-drawn carts.

Landry was now a few miles away from the Trickle of Hope. A voice that sounded as old as time itself said, You can have those things you desire, Landry.

At first, Landry thought he heard the voice come from behind him. But looking around from his wagon seat, he did not see anyone close at hand who could speak to him. He was sure he had left everyone back at the Trickle of Hope. Those on foot were strolling down the dusty road almost a mile behind him.

You can be as powerful as any man in the Supreme Council or even become the Supreme Elder himself if you so wish! Earth is ripe for the taking! the voice said. Landry was sure he had heard the voice and understood what the voice had said. But there was no one close enough to speak to him as clearly as the voice spoke.

Who are you, and how is it you know my name? asked Landry. Landry stopped the cart and looked around on all sides again. He was sure he would see someone, but no one was standing near his wagon.

Landry had first heard those exact words many nights ago in a dream. You can be as powerful as any man in the Supreme Council or even become the Supreme Elder himself if you so wish! Earth is ripe for the taking!

Those words were repeated in the same dream on the following nights—a dream Landry knew all too well. Landry had once been the leader of the Flatlander’s military trooper force, but he had had to promise the Supreme Council he would not lead men into battle against the Council again. In the dream, he was leading a mighty army down a paved street. Beyond that, he could not figure out any other part of the dream. Landry never wanted to lead men again.

It was right after one of those dreams, when he had woken up in a cold sweat, that he had first heard those words, reminding him of his past life. For many nights after, Landry ignored the voice and dream.

You can have those things you desire so much, Landry! Earth is ripe for the taking! the voice kept saying. It was an ageless voice, as cold as the snow-peaked mountains in the far north of the Flatlands. Landry thought about ignoring the voice, but then he realized the voice was speaking to him during the daytime. He had never heard the voice outside his house and never during the day.

Who are you, and why are you tormenting me? Landry yelled, looking around in the air and around his wagon.

You can have those things you desire! Earth is ripe for the taking, Landry.

What is this Earth you are speaking about, and how can I have things I desire to have when I desire nothing? Who are you?

Several minutes passed by, but the voice said nothing. Instead of continuing onto the city, Landry kept talking. Determined to get the voice to have a conversation with him, he asked more questions. Why are you speaking about the Earth? What is it? What could I have to do with it when I’ve never heard of it? If you’ve lost something and would like for me to help you find it, please say so, but stop talking as if you want nothing from me! Landry barked, stumbling over words as he quickly tried to get his questions out. Of all the things he had done in his youth and adult life, this was the first time he felt afraid. But to his surprise, a few minutes later, the voice replied.

I know who you are, Landry. My followers have been watching you and reporting back to me. We know you led a rebellion in the Flatlands, and we know how close you came to overthrowing that government in the Flatlands before the Supreme Council rescued it.

Amazed at what he heard from the voice, Landry just sat on his wagon, listening, too shocked to move and too afraid to interrupt. His
