NEVER SAFE
Crystal felt safe, yet she knew she would never be able to stop looking over her shoulder. A decade ago today should have been a distant memory but there was a lasting reminder. The Grey Alpha’s cub had left four large scars running down her father’s face from ear to chin that prompted Crystal’s memory every day. The Grey Wolf pack had all decided that the Wolf Fae were a danger to them and should be made extinct. Father had held them off while Crystal’s mother had run with her in her arms. It was as well she was a fast runner, or they’d be dead now. Being scared of killing the red wolf Alpha and thereby breaking the Blue Wolfprint Treaty, they’d left her father alive - but only just. The Blue Wolfprint Treaty had stood for three generations as her father Rowan’s grandfather was the one saving the grey wolf Alpha’s life and was rewarded with a piece of land for the red wolves.
Now Crystal and her mother Tasha, had had a death warrant put on their lives by all the grey wolves - if they ever found them.
She was going to risk all of her safety today. Crystal had always been secluded with private tutoring at the Windcross Cottage, but today started University, and for that, she must venture out of the red wolf territory and into the city.
Crystal wiped the sleep out of her eyes, sitting up in her bed. She looked into the depths of the shadows in the room to ensure none of them was a grey wolf hiding, ready to prance.
She almost jumped out of her skin as her mobile rang. She leaned over her nightstand to glance at the screen; ‘BFF Kimberly’. They had talked about today at great length, what could she want?
Kim, what’s up?
Panic! My navy-blue blazer doesn’t fit. I must have gained weight during the summer.
Didn’t you try it out before deciding to wear that on our first day?
I wore it only two months ago. It never crossed my mind. What do I do?
Crystal paused, puzzled. Do you want me to command you with my wolf fae powers, or is that a rhetorical question?
Damn! It’s no fun having a wolf fae as best friend.
Red wolves aren’t a walk in the park either.
Do you want me to escalate that complaint to the Alpha?
Crystal laughed. Father has more important things to deal with.
Okay, okay, so do I wear the grey suit jacket over black skinny jeans?
Kim, it’s University not an office job. Why don’t you just wear something trendy and semi-sexy?
I’m not you! I want to look professional.
I’m not even going to comment on that insult.
I don’t mean you aren’t professional.
No, just that you don’t want to dress in a mini-skirt, high boots and a jumper that state I’m desirable but not for sale.
Please, don’t command me to wear that!
Fine. Naked?
You wouldn’t dare!
Wear what you feel like. I’ll see you in the same parking as we used last week when we snooped around.
Crystal hung up, looking at the time. 7:24 am. Now she really had to hurry up. Luckily, she could smell her mother’s signature american breakfast pancakes. Better to eat them before she showered and got dressed, she didn’t want to spill jam on the only perfect outfit that would serve to give her a good first impression.
Crystal darted down the stairs and swung around the doorpost to enter the kitchen, touching a soft kiss on her mother’s cheek as she swept by.
Good morning, Mother.
Good morning, my silver cub. Did you manage to sleep last night, or were you too excited?
I’m good. Kimberly is the one freaking out.
Mother stopped frying the pancakes and waved the spatula at her. You’re not allowed to order your teachers around if you smell they’re wolves. That’s cheating.
Crystal placed a hand dramatically over her chest. Me? I never would.
I would command you to do something really embarrassing in front of the whole class if I ever heard that you’d done that.
Mom! You’re spoiling the fun!
You can have plenty of fun when playing with your father’s minions in the woods. But not in school. You hear me?
Fine. I’ll be a good girl,
she answered, rolling her eyes and pushing her hair over her shoulders.
Crystal’s mother was still waving her spatula in the air. Don’t you flick that fiery hair of yours at me. I’m in no mood to…ah, now I’ve burned the pancakes. Well, these will be yours.
Mother scooped three small pancakes onto Crystal’s plate. She had been overreacting. Only one side had a darker colour with some black speckles, but Crystal would say they were far from burnt. She shovelled a large spoon of jam onto them and topped them with sprinkles of sugar.
I can hardly take credit for these pancakes, Crystal. You add so much sugar it’s amazing you can actually taste them.
Mother, stop nagging me! If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were the one who is nervous.
It’s your first day at University. Make sure you take a photo outside school and send it to me.
It almost sounds as if you never thought I’d be clever enough to attend University.
Crystal’s mother turned back to the hob and poured three new puddles of mixture into the pan. I never thought your father would allow you out of the red wolf territory.
Did you have something to do with that?
Crystal leaned over, ensuring she was in her mother’s peripheral view, to give her an accusing look.
She blushed and shook the frying pan to make the pancakes unstick. Maybe.
Crystal smiled to herself as she took another heavenly bite. She gobbled up the rest, talking to her mother about her mother’s job at the zoo. She had worked there for years now and had the animals in chip shape with help of her fae powers. Crystal couldn’t see how that was much different from using her fae powers on her teachers, but her mother was a hard boss to argue against.
When she had finished her breakfast, she raced upstairs and into the shower. She blow-dried her hair super straight and applied lots of makeup. Then she squeezed into the clothes, which had been condemned by Kim as slutty. Crystal twirled in front of the mirror to conclude that she looked perfect, before grabbing her backpack and heading for her car. A car, she had received from her father because she had commanded him to buy it for her, which meant it was exactly her style. It
