About this ebook

But securing the information and getting out alive may be trickier than they bargained for.
Steven D. Brewer
Steven D. Brewer has been a fan of science fiction and fantasy stories for as long as he can remember. He still remembers getting scolded for not reading chapter books in fourth grade because he was avidly consuming The Hobbit late at night, by flashlight under his covers. And he probably got his copy from his older brother and most important mentor. As an author, Steven identifies diverse obsessions that underlie his writing. His early interest in natural history, life science, and environmentalism he learned from his father, an ecologist and ornithologist. He attributes seeing his mother study German for his abiding passion for languages that led him to major in Spanish (as well as Biology) and subsequently learn Esperanto and use it for international correspondence and travel. His fascination with Japanese culture grew from writing haiku and haibun in Esperanto. And his mania for information technology and the Internet led him back to graduate school where he earned a Masters in Earth Science and a PhD in Science Education. His scattered interests led to an eclectic employment history. He did farm work and food service growing up in southwest Michigan. He has worked as a large-animal caretaker, an archeological faunal analyst, a hunter of the fastest lizards in the world, a gas-station attendant, a bilingual teacher’s aide for a migrant-worker education program, and an edutainer with live animals and a portable planetarium. For the past quarter century, he has served as a non-tenure-system faculty member in higher education.Steven currently teaches scientific writing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He lives in Amherst, Massachusetts with his extended family.

Author’s Note
In 2007, on its fiftieth anniversary, I read On the Road by Jack Kerouac. It made a big impact on me, although I'm sure it resonated more with people of my parents' generation. But as I was writing this part, I realized that this installment is Revin's On the Road.
Revin learns a lot about the places he's going through. And, as usual, he learns a lot about himself as well. He's starting to understand that his choices impact the people around him. And that his acceptance of things as they are reinforces and strengthens them. We also learn a lot more about the enigmatic Professor. And we meet some new characters who will have profound influences on Revin's life.
Finally, we also gain insight into the overall political system within which these island fiefdoms operate. We haven't heard much about this before — not because it isn't important, but because of Revin's lack of experience with any of this. Revin is an autodidact; he basically had no access to schooling while growing up. He's learned a lot since, but there's still a lot he doesn't know. And there's a lot more he's going to have to learn.
Crossing the Streams
The queen of belleriand slipped almost silently through the tranquil night air. The timekeeper quietly struck second bell. Revin heard muffled thumps as the shift changed and new men came on duty while others retired to their hammocks. Most of the pirates were already asleep, but Revin was too keyed up after the day’s events. In his mind’s eye, he kept seeing the man’s face as he was run through … No. When Revin ran his sword through him. He’d had the shakes off and on for a while and so, to distract himself, he started to read Momo’s diary.
He smiled at her descriptions of things that seemed ordinary to her, but were almost unbelievable to him: traveling to the country house by carriage, attending a costume holiday ball, a full day spent shopping for shoes … The scenes implied by these activities were nearly beyond his comprehension. Then there were her dreams and aspirations that were sprinkled liberally throughout. Although she did not name him explicitly among them, Revin wondered if he was not reading between the lines that she imagined them together.
Revin read the final entry in Momo’s journal, then snuffed out the lantern and sat with his head in his hands. He was becoming more and more confused about his own feelings. Temper your expectations,
the Baron had told him. What were those, exactly? He closed his eyes and tried to still his unquiet heart.
The next morning, the Queen returned to her berth on the steep side of Kapper Island, where the pirate’s secret base was located. The men who’d been on duty went to sleep, but Will called Grip, Revin,
