About this ebook

This is a forty lesson Christ centered addiction recovery workbook based upon the Truth of the Bible. The author draws from personal experience of how he has found healing and deliverance from drug and alcohol addiction through a personal relationship with God. While reflecting upon his own recovery, the author draws from the scriptures teaching us biblically what God says about our addictions and how we can overcome them in the power of God. God tells us that an addiction, in whatever form it may take, is idolatry. We become controlled by someone or something other than God. We were never created to live our lives for anyone other than God. When we look to God in faith, dealing with our false gods and casting those idols down, we can experience a power we have never known before. A power to save, heal, and deliver. If you are ready to stop listening to the voices around you and to begin renewing your mind with what God says is true, this workbook can be a tool leading to your deliverance and healing. Throughout the pages of this book are the life transforming testimonies of others, just like you, who have taken this journey and are forever changed.

    L.I.F.E. Ministries - Michael R. Dixon

    CORE FOUNDATIONAL BELIEFS

The following core beliefs are interwoven within these lessons:

#1. We believe in the biblical teaching of the Trinity; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, yet there is only one God in three persons.

We believe that God is the Supreme Ruler and Creator of all the universe and all that exists.

Jesus Christ (God in human flesh, presented as God’s only Son in the Bible), was born into this world through the virgin Mary. Jesus lived a life free of sin, and gave His life freely for us that our sins could be forgiven. Jesus died, was buried, and arose on the third day. It is through faith in accepting Jesus as our substitute that we can receive and live in the abundant life that He offers.

We believe that as Jesus ascended back to the Father in Heaven that He sent His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, into the world to convict people of their sin, to draw people to Jesus for salvation, and to empower believers to live transformed lives.

#2. We believe that the Bible is our foundation for truth, authored by God Himself as He used human writers to record His words. We believe that God’s Word offers us direction for life, solutions to our struggles, and most importantly it reveals to us how we can be made right with God, our Creator.

#3. We believe that drug and alcohol abuse, as well as all addictions, are not diseases in themselves. However, we do acknowledge that habitual use and continual active involvement in such lifestyles can and does lead to sickness and even disease, mental illness as well as shortened life spans and premature death. We believe that all addiction is the result of our sinful nature. Without a right relationship with God, who created us, we are left to our own schemes, plans, and devices.

#4. We believe that it is only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that we can receive the power we need to change. It is only with God’s power that we are able to live a life free from addiction and free from the bondage of sin. Through God’s power, which is available to you, we are able to live a full, abundant, free, purposeful and joy-filled life.

#5. We believe that there is hope for change in anyone’s life! No one has fallen so low that they cannot be changed, restored, and transformed by God if they will come to Him in humility, calling upon Jesus for salvation. We believe that God is willing and ready to forgive, save, and deliver anyone. We believe recovery is possible and available for all. You do not have to stay the person you are right now!

#6. We believe in the local church. It is vital in our recovery and personal growth that we surround ourselves with other believers who are also desiring to live in the freedom and life that Christ offers. God has given the church the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:16) which means showing others how they can be in a right relationship with God. The local church is our best support group.

As you read and work through the following assignments you will notice these core beliefs in each lesson. Our foundation of truth is God’s Word, the Holy Bible. Our transforming power for change is realized through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The only way to be reconciled with God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and empowered to live this abundant life is to come in faith to Jesus Christ in repentance and surrender.

OKAY. Now, I want you to pause just a moment. Take a deep breath, stop trying to figure it all out and commit today that you will remain active in this program. Listen for God’s voice through each truth that is taught. Regardless of what you may be feeling right now, God has a tremendous plan for your deliverance and for your future. Let’s begin the journey now!

I have always said that the LIFE program and curriculum have been wonderful for just that; Life. Addiction is something that I have not personally battled, but it has ransacked my family for many years. So often we focus primarily upon the addiction itself and not upon the truth. The truth is the LIFE curriculum helps you stay focused and grounded by pointing you to the truth of Christ. This program helps you learn how to use the tools needed, grounded in scripture, to break free from the bondage of addiction. If you are like me and have had the horrible effects of addiction try to settle into your family’s life, I encourage you to take the time and work through this curriculum. We often make excuses for the addiction and try to save our loved ones from the horrible pain of their own choices. There is only one who can save them and He is fully capable of doing just that; trust in Jesus Christ. These lessons will help you stand firm and teach you how to better serve your loved one by living in freedom every day in your own personal life.

    Living Abundantly

    Week #1

Would you prefer many blessings in your life or only a few? How about money? Recently the lottery system in North Carolina has been overwhelmed with huge jackpots, sometimes over 1 billion dollars, and long lines of people in stores trying to purchase tickets. So, based on that response I think it’s safe to say that most people would like to have an abundance of money. This L.I.F.E. curriculum is about abundance. Our focus is to help people experience the good life, the full life, the abundant life that only Christ can bring. Reason with me just a moment, since God created us shouldn’t He be the first one that we turn to for direction on how we should live? I mean, God had a purpose and plan in mind when He created us. Interesting enough, this abundant life has nothing to do with how much money you have or how many toys you own. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Rick Stanley, the younger step-brother of Elvis Pressley. I remember Rick sharing with us his experiences growing up as the younger brother to Elvis. At Christmas, Elvis would bring home motorbikes, toys, and all kinds of expensive gifts for everyone. Elvis seemed to have it all. He was rich in wealth and recognized around the world. Yet, Rick said that he would often hear his brother say, I’m lonely. I’m not happy. I’m struggling. You see contrary to what so many believe, it’s not wealth or even being an iconic figure like Elvis that brings a full life. Let’s begin our discussion today as we think about where this abundance can be found. We will continue to look at this subject during the next two weeks.

Listen to the words of Jesus:

    John 10:10 (ESV)

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came

that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Based upon that verse the thief comes to do what three things?

    1. _______________________________________

    2. _______________________________________

    3. _______________________________________

Has the enemy been successful in your past in fulfilling one or more of his intentions? How? Please explain:

There is clearly good and evil present in this world. The battle between the two is evident and clear. The enemy desires to destroy and Jesus comes to bring us life and that we might have it more abundantly. Abundant life offered by Jesus! I searched for that life for many years before coming to Christ for what only He could provide. You probably have as well. I tried so many things to try and fulfill a hunger I seemed to have deep within and nothing seemed to satisfy me for very long. The drugs and alcohol, the immoral lifestyle, the partying and life of crime, only brought me pain and trouble. I am excited to share with you in this lesson my experience that has ended my search and brought to me real life in Christ.

    1 Thessalonians 3:7-12 (ESV)

for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. ⁸ For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. ⁹ For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, ¹⁰ as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? ¹¹ Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, ¹² and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you,

There are two words in verse 12 above that speak of abundance. What are these two words?

    1. ___________________________________

    2. ___________________________________

God doesn’t want us to simply survive but He desires that we actually thrive! You were actually created to thrive. Isn’t that good news? Often when I ask people, How are you doing? I hear the response, Well, I’m making it. I’m getting by. I’m surviving. Wait! That doesn’t sound like abundance of life to me! Today we will discuss the first thing that’s needed for you to experience the abundant life of Christ:

    #1. FAITH

Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 3:7, we have been comforted about you through your faith.

What do you think faith means?

The word faith is translated from a Greek word which means, trust, or firm persuasion. Where do you ultimately place your trust? What is it that you are convinced is completely trustworthy? Paul found comfort in knowing that the people to whom he was writing had placed their faith in the right place. He identifies the object of their faith in 1 Thessalonians 3:8, you are standing fast in the Lord. This means that they were trusting God’s Word to be completely reliable and trustworthy.

    Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

"Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path."

According to Psalm 119:105 God’s Word is referred to as:

    #1. _____________________________________

    #2. _____________________________________

    Matthew 4:4 (ESV)

But He answered and said, It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread

alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

According to Matthew 4:4, we need more than physical food. What else do we need?

    Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

As we place our faith in God, and live our lives trusting Him, God is pleased and we are blessed. Faith pleases God but faith also places us in the proper position in life to experience God’s abundance. You must have faith in what God says in order to live victoriously in this abundant life. Grab these promises from God with your faith:

    Romans 8:37 (ESV)

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

How can trusting the above verse aid you in recovery?

    1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

That is a promise from God! You can trust God and every promise He has ever made. How does 1 Cor. 10:13 give you strength to stay clean and sober?

    Romans 8:16-17 (ESV)

"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷ and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together."

    We are called what? ___________________________________________

Decide right now what will be the object of your faith. Are you going to continue to trust in yourself, your own ability, your own will-power, and self-determination to change? How has that worked for you in the past? Have you experienced long-term sobriety? Will you trust in man-made theories and philosophies to walk in victory? Listen to how God describes programs and methods that are void of His truth:

    Romans 1:22 (ESV)

Claiming to be wise, they became fools…

God offers you all you need to be forever changed! He does not tell us that change will be easy but He does promise to give us all we need for change to be realized.

    2 Peter 1:3 (NKJV)

"as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,"

Fill in the blank: His divine power has given to us ____________________ that pertain to life and godliness….

Take advantage of all the resources God has placed around you to aid you in recovery. Become active in a Bible believing church. Plug into the available support groups. Mediate on the prayers and steps that are taught. Do your homework. See your therapist or counselor. Do everything you can to stay clean but don’t leave God out! Make sure that your number one priority is to have faith in what He says above all else. His Word is the foundational truth that we will look to together through this program.

    A word of testimony:

I started experimenting with drugs throughout high school. I ended up getting pregnant. I got really sick and was prescribed pain pills as well as other medications. I stayed on the pain pills for two years. I became addicted and my addiction led to heroin. I ended up losing full custody of my son. After I lost my son, I wanted my life back. I went to outpatient treatment and they prescribed me more medications. Honestly, the medications I was prescribed were worse on me than the drugs I had become addicted to. I began to self-medicate again because nothing else was working. All these secular programs, there is no real compassion and support there. During my first visit to the LIFE program everyone was welcoming. I could be myself. I could be real and honest about my struggles. Coming to LIFE has helped me. Ashley Pendergrass, Nash County, N.C.

    Jesus offers you abundant life!

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I long for the abundant life that only You can offer. Please help me to walk in your truth, applying Your resources to my daily life, that I will realize and experience real life. Thank-you for already providing all that I need to be changed forever. As I begin these lessons, please speak to me. Help me to hear your voice and give me faith to believe. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

    Living Abundantly Part 2

    Week #2

We are studying how we can experience a life that is full, satisfying, and fulfilling. The L.I.F.E. ministry is founded upon Jesus’ statement as recorded in John 10:10 that He had come to give abundant life. This full and rich life is available to you! Last week we focused on the vital aspect of faith. This is where real life begins, through placing our faith or trust in Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. God created us for the purpose of bringing Him honor and glory. Sin has made this impossible for you and I to accomplish on our own. We simply do not have the strength within ourselves to live a life that honors God and in turn blesses us. This is how the Apostle Paul described his own inadequacies:

    Romans 7:15-20 (ESV)

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. ¹⁶ Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. ¹⁷ So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. ¹⁸ For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. ¹⁹ For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. ²⁰ Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

Do you ever feel the way that Paul felt? He said that sometimes he couldn’t figure out why he did the things that he did. Looking back over my life of substance abuse I can so identify with his statement! Why in the world would a person desire to keep going back into a lifestyle that has done nothing but brought pain and trouble? The pull of addiction is real just as this spiritual battle is real. If we attempt to live our lives without faith in God we are going to find nothing but repetitive failures, relapses, and a continual state of, I just don’t seem to have what it takes.

Describe a time in your life when you realized that you did not have the power you needed to accomplish change in your life:

There is a story of a little ten-year boy who was told by his father, I want you to go outside and unload those boards off the back of my truck. Use every resource at your disposal. The boy went out to his father’s truck and saw these ten feet long, heavy boards laying in the back of his father’s truck. The boy, desiring to please his father attempted to pick up one of the boards but he could hardly budge it. After trying and trying, almost exhausting himself, he returned to his father, I’m sorry dad but I can’t, the boards are too heavy. The father asked his son, Did you use every resource at your disposal? The boy replied, I guess I did. The father responded, No son, you didn’t. I am here and willing to help. You didn’t come to me.

How do you think that story applies to your life?

What are the heavy boards in your life right now that you need help dealing with?

To whom should you turn to for help?

#1. Faith is vital if you will live out the abundant life that Christ is offering you. However, there is something else you need in your life. You need #2. Prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. As you pray don’t worry about the mechanics of prayer, the words you use, the length of your prayer, or what time of day or night it is. Just open your heart up to God. Be honest with your struggles. Be real with God. He already knows what you are dealing with anyway. He knows you better than you know yourself. Let’s return to 1 Thessalonians 3:

    1 Thessalonians 3:9-10 (ESV)

For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith?

Paul is writing to the church at Thessalonica as he inquires concerning any prayer needs that they may have. Look at verse 9. What two things should be a part of our prayers?

    #1. __________________________________________

    #2. __________________________________________

Let me tell you what will help you mentally, emotionally and spiritually to overcome your struggles: Being thankful and being joyful! Get your mind in line with what God says. Expect to be victorious and to conquer temptation! If you expect failure you will more than likely experience that in your life!

Make a list of things below that you can give thanks for right now in prayer:

Now take a few minutes and thank God in prayer for those things.

There needs to be thanksgiving in your prayers. There needs to be joy in your prayers. How can you have joy when things are not going your way? You choose to be joyful anyway! Begin by telling yourself, Although I may have troubles to deal with right now I’m still going to be joyful because I know God is going to see me through. I’m going to rejoice because problems come but problems go. I choose joy.

Include thanksgiving and joy in your prayer life but also make sure you have a PURPOSE! Paul wrote in verse 9 that he longed to be with them and to see them face to face. Whatever your need is-take it to God in prayer! Be specific! Have a purpose as you speak with God. Sometimes my purpose is simply to praise my Lord and to give Him thanks. Paul also said that he prayed day and night. That means continually.

Use the space below to write a prayer from your heart to God. Include thanksgiving and joy in your prayer. Have a purpose as you write your prayer:

PRAYER: Dear God, it is in faith, believing, that I come to you today. I trust you and all that you are and in all that you do. I believe that you have already made a way for me through my struggles. I know that I will be victorious as I continue to trust you. My heart is filled with joy as I think of your great love, mercy and grace extended towards me. Thank-you for loving me.

    Living Abundantly Part 3

    Week #3

As we continue studying this biblical teaching of abundant life we must realize that faith is needed, communication with God is needed, but we must also listen to God as He speaks. Listen and receive every word that God says and know that it is truth! This will be the focus of this week’s lesson.

So often we can be guilty of hearing but not really listening. Can I get an amen? If you have been a parent you can no doubt remember occasions when you told your son or daughter to do something, only to discover later that the task was left undone. Why didn’t you take care of this? you asked your child. I didn’t know I was suppose to, may have been the reply. Oh, yes, I remember those times. Yet how often God must feel the same frustrations when we act in the same manner towards His commands for us. My friend, ignorance is no excuse. We have the Word of God. So, I encourage you to not simply hear God’s instructions to you but I want you to really listen to what God says. If you really listen, then God’s Word will be seen through your life in the manner in which you live.

Listening to and heeding His voice is necessary for you to live in His abundance. I want you to receive five clear statements from God. Really listen. Receive these statements as truth from God because they are. Addictions break a person down in many ways. The struggle brings shame, guilt, feelings of low self-value and worthlessness. It is vital that you address the spiritual issues at the root of addiction. You need to know what God says about you. These truths can aid you in your recovery, give you peace and encouragement, and transform your state of mind. Listen as God speaks these truths to you:

Truth #1. "Don’t question my love for you. I love you so much that I died for you. Just look at the cross. I did that for you, in your place, so you could be set free from every bondage."

Most people are familiar with John 3:16, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Here’s the foundation for the Christian life! Since God loved you enough to die on the cross, please understand that He loves you in your struggles now.

    Romans 8:38-39 (ESV)

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What does that verse say to you about how much God loves you right now?

The love of God will never fail you! Isn’t that wonderful news? You may feel like everyone else has failed you, and maybe you have even failed yourself, but God doesn’t fail in anything, including His love for you. Often people who need help in recovery are ashamed to ask because they feel so undeserving of another chance. Many people spend years trying to make up for some failure in their past. But Jesus reminds us that even the addiction, the lies, and all the past wrongs can’t keep Him from loving us. He reminds us in Jeremiah 31:34 that I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

God says this to you right now!

Truth #2. Why don’t you allow Me to carry your burden? I am here to help you.

We know that recovery is often a difficult journey, and many people grow tired of the fight. There are triggers and temptations that can pull us back into using again. We must always be on guard.

    Matthew
