Among Strangling Roots
The sky hung low and dark over the fields of Yellow Ridge Farm. Marion stared through thin window panes at the approaching rain clouds, where they dragged a grey veil over the distant hills.
Subdued conversation filled the rooms of her mother’s house. The occasional clink of china betrayed a courageous individual confronting the buffet, where dainty sandwiches and vol-au-vents were picked at with little enthusiasm. A large Zuckerkuchen funeral cake took up the centre of the antique dining table.
Marion knew most of the hushed words were about her.
‘Do you think she’ll move in?’
‘She works in the city, doesn’t she? I heard she wanted to get as far away from here as possible . . .’
‘The farm’s too run down to sell, the market is poor . . .’
‘It would be such a lovely family home. So much space for Lilli to run around in.’
‘It could be just what they need. You know, a fresh start.’
Lilli sat on a stool in the corner, playing silently with one of her grandmother’s rag dolls. The adults in the room showered her with doleful glances. Poor thing, they said. She looks so sad.
