Growing My Wings Back - Edwina Neal Britt
MY HOMETOWN
I am from all things Griffin, Georgia where everything was shared; the daughter of Trudie and Edward with a sprinkle of my stepfather Linwood.
I am from a mother with an honest heart and a father who was brilliant from the start.
I come from strict discipline and humble beginnings.
I am from affection and sacrifice, from eat all your vegetables to girl why did you do that.
I am linked to my older sister who enjoyed sneaking in the wine to find that it was divine.
I am linked to my younger sister who stole chocolate at the age of five only to return it to stay alive.
I am linked to a younger brother who took everything apart only to build it back from the start.
I come from sharing almost everything including the bread, but did I have to share my bed?
I am from succulent fried pork chops with heavy gravy making me so full that I feel lazy.
I am from all things Griffin, Georgia, a small town with a big heart.
Dedicated to all the gifted African
Americans who feel like caged souls.
CHILDHOOD INJUSTICE
Shadows on the backside of a completed test create a caged animal waiting to be released.
How would a five-year old from the wrong side of the tracks know the punishment for scribbling on the back of a test would be a five-year sentence?
A young gifted black girl overflowing with unrealized possibilities and dreams galore.
Enraged at the world for the injustice and limitation knowing something is amiss without knowing exactly what it is.
Test the guinea pig to increase the sentence to life caged with those known for defects.
Even under tremendous pressure, the test does not cooperate for it unveils giftedness.
Still the instruction was not demanding, and the mind drifted to whereabouts more complex.
The voice is fading into the massive and uncharted abyss, and it too is imprisoned.
Even when the voice discovers there is a gifted program occupied by all white bodies, it still does not speak.
A kind-hearted teacher secretly transmits information that the prisoner obtained the pre-eminent score on the standardized test and none of those unchained bodies in the gifted class surpassed it.
The voiceless prisoner cannot disclose the private conversation with the well-meaning teacher.
The bars of the cage thicken and even with the evidence, no one enters to release the animal from the
