Fresh Water for Flowers is a story about happiness. Set in France, the main protagonist is Violette Toussaint née Trenet. The name was given to her by a nurse who thought she was dying and probably the color. Her last name was after a famous French singer. Violette grew up as an orphan and eventually married Philippe Toussaint, with whom she spent a loveless marriage. At first, the couple operated manual level crossings for the railways but eventually lost their jobs to technological progress. They then get jobs as cemetery keepers in Burgundy, and soon Philippe disappears
