    Violet Stars - Brittany Weeks

    1

Acold, monotonous voice called out on the loudspeaker:

Last call for those boarding the flight to Shadowlight Academy.

It was now or never. I quickly got into the line that stretched for miles, it seemed. I waited for what seemed like forever. Just then, my mom appeared, E, sweetie, you forgot your sunscreen.

How had she even gotten past security? It was an intimidating, but liberating thought: I would soon be living away from my mother. This was the first step toward becoming an adult. I was so close yet so far away. I knew the thought of it devastated her.

I was now at the front of the line. The spaceship looked more intimidating up close. I stepped inside and sat in my seat, which had a little white card with my name on it: Evilynne Tompkins. As the spaceship filled up, I felt queasy. What if something goes wrong?

I was too deep in thought of various accidents that could happen to notice the white-haired girl sitting next to me. I was knocked out of my daydream by the enormous cloud of powder she used to cover her face in. I coughed and choked as she apologized. The cloud of powder cleared and I was able to read her name card. Lucille Deville. She applied red lipstick to her plump lips. She had the faintest bittersweet scent, which reminded me of cranberry sorbet.

Hopefully, that will be the last interruption from Ms. Deville.

Just then, a green liquid splashed me in the face. The girl sitting in front of me was having some trouble with her arm, which appeared to be robotic. This is going to be a long trip.

When we arrived at Shadowlight, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was even more magnificent in person. Ginormous rock spires towered overhead. They shone brightly in the sky. In the distance, I could see in bright bold letters that read: Shadowlight Academy. I was so excited. My dreams had finally come true. It almost makes up for the long, meticulous trip with those young women on the spaceship.

We split into two groups: the men and the women. We marched in two straight lines all the way to the Academy. Inside were statues honoring former Shadowlight soldiers. One statue caught my eye. It was a girl standing on a mountaintop. In her hands she held a purple gemstone.

    The plaque read:

"The Violet Stars were a group of skilled soldiers who protect the galaxy. Their name was given in honor of Purple Violetta, a brave young woman who gave her life to save the world and ultimately, the universe. She and a group of fellow soldiers from Shadowlight Academy went on a perilous journey and were not expected to return home. By volunteering herself, she allowed the others to return home safely. Violetta’s family was given the Prism trophy in honor of her sacrifice.

Violetta was enrolled at Shadowlight Academy from 2018-2019"

    Fascinating!

Iarrived at my room with a sense of relief. It felt good to finally be able to rest after a long day. I sat my suitcase down and plopped down on my bed. I fell into a deep sleep. I was violently woken up by the sound of mechanized
