Introduction
Savate is not just about kicking, or the sports, but is an education about life, and everything that enhances one’s experience in life. You learn about yourself, and your interaction with people and the world around you. You learn that humans exist physically, and mentally you learn to function equally in each of these realms, and to strive for an ideal balance of the body, and mind. You learn about morals, ethics, and a unique philosophy that emphasizes the importance of good health and physical conditioning combined with an educated mind to have the power to protect and defend what is right, while tempering the power with the responsibility of self-control.
Savate or boxe Francaise has evolved into a much more diversified art, spanning light-touch aesthetics, full contact fight sport competition, and reality based street defense. The major emphasis of this book, is on the competitive aspect.
Physical skills include posture, stance, physical equilibrium, smooth and fluid movement, range, distance, angling, timing, rhythm. Evasion, parrying, blocking, striking (with feet, clenched fist), and escape from any restraints. Education includes the knowledge and application of the laws of motion, physics, mechanics and other natural forces.
With the strategy of Savate tactics having an emphasis on the strength and reach of the legs, kicking is the primary weapon and placed at the forefront. While it is important to obtain a balance of abilities in all ranges of fight sport, much time is dedicated to increasing the skills of kicking (stretching, balance, accuracy, power and timing).
In order to improve, test and demonstrate the various levels and stages of developing all of the above skills , students practice solo routines such as basic technical drills, duo, bag work , targeting drills, and assaut ( controlled sparring ) . Partner routines help to gradually increase the realism of an assaut/combat from one-step, two-step, & three-step sparring, free sparring , and various levels of self-defense application with resisting opponents in a variety of environments and clothing.
Savate is a complete, stand-alone system that covers all aspects of unarmed combat, and was designed, refined and developed like all original Martial art curricula to include anything useful, therefore it does not need to be supplemented with any other system.
Like any stand-alone system. Martial artists practicing Savate must study and analyze the techniques and tactics used by other fighters, and have a strategy for defending and defeating those methods without abandoning the core principles and codified training system that is unique to your own system. In essence, competitive savate is much like standard boxing. It contains all the same punches (jab, cross, uppercut) and movements, except the emphasis is on the feet rather than the hands. Savate is more a kicking sport rather than a punching sport.

Warm-up Dynamic Stretching
In Savate, we start our training with dynamic stretching and end our training with isometric stretching. Using it, we train successfully. Stretching is an exercise in beginning things correctly.
Dynamic Leg Flexibility stretching
Dynamic leg stretching involves lifting your leg and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement. Perform leg raises in sets of eight to twelve repetitions.
By swinging the leg go straight up, muscles are stretched dynamically as opposed to the static elongation produced by other methods. Stretching in an upright position creates a better sense of balance although for this side stretch beginners are advise to hold on to a wall . Sustaining the hip back slightly, foot held in the side position that allows the leg to swing higher. (See Photos on the next page for your reference)
Tips: If after a few sets you feel tired – stop. Muscles and tendons when subjected to excess tensile strain lose their elastic restoring force, much like a rubber band that once over stretched either snaps or loses its resiliency. This causes a decrease in amplitude of your movements. Do only the number of repetition that you can do without diminishing your range of motion.
Remember this! More repetitions will only cause you to lose some of your flexibility. When you exert greater effort, it will leave a deeper trace in your memory!
Side Thrusting Kick Stretch
This is another dynamic stretching to aide you in perfecting the intermuscular coordination. This stretching helps you improve the elasticity of the muscles and ligaments when executing the Chasse lateral (side thrusting kick). To do this stretch, stand with one hand resting on the back of a chair for support. Raise your kicking leg to a cocked chasse lateral (side kick) position. Extend your leg out to the side first aiming on the middle line. Gradually increase the height of the line until you reached your peak. The number of repetition per set is between 8 to 12. Note: To align your hips, make sure your supporting leg is pointing towards the chair. You
