DEDICATION
This anthology is dedicated to the notebook fillers, the stop and go scribblers, the late-night lamplight wordsmiths. Here’s to the daydreamers who should be working, the dishwashers who should be writing, the lost-in-thought meeting attendees, those with shower stall flashes of brilliance, the jump out of bed at two a.m.-ers. Hail to the constant email checkers, the rejection slip collectors, the eavesdroppers, the periodic poets, the early risers, and the late bloomers. We celebrate those with walls of post-its and file cabinets and hard drives full of works in progress, those who can’t quite get started or can’t quite get finished, those who write drunk and edit sober. We honor those whose teardrops pepper the keyboard and those with champaign glasses raised in celebration, the ones who keep it to themselves, and the ones who put it out there. Here’s to you, the writers, who regularly heed that age old admonition: Put your ass in a chair.
—Paul Garrett
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This anthology of poetry, short prose, and art is a collective effort of the members of Carpe Stylum! a critique writing group. Their cooperation in completing Words Have Wings helped in ways they may not even realize. It has been a privilege to work with these dedicated members. As I spent many hours collecting, compiling, editing, and pouring over the work submitted, I was astounded at the truths revealed. The members of this group have loved, lost, suffered, and survived. Their work a reflection of life. Their dedication and determination to write well, their encouragement of one another, and their sharing words of wisdom will no doubt
